MML1-2 and Tron Bonne are all amazing games that hold up. It's not a Zoomer thing at all. 1 & 2's atmosphere alone are fantastic. It would be cool if more cel shaded games understood what made 1 so fantastic.

The gameplay hasn't aged well at all, but everything else being so soulful goes a long way to make up for that.

      Anonymous

How does gameplay not age? Who plays something, thinks it's great, than years later think it's shit? Pong is fun even though it's simple, Dragon Quest's 1 controls are not intuitive.

        Anonymous

The limitations of MML are obvious in hindsight. It came out before the dualshock, the camera movement is awkward, the pioneering 3D lock on is awkward. It isn't bad, it's just the foundation which has been massively expanded on at this point.
Have you seriously never experienced that before?

Yeah, and it's a 20-year-old game, are you actually trying to apply 2023 standards to 90s games?

No one in their right mind would expect these games to feel as smooth as modern games.

            Anonymous

No, but it's fair to say it's not as good today as it was when there was little else to compare it to. No new player would ever appreciate the gameplay the same way a player in 1997 would have.

              Anonymous

I agree but the fault there lies with the expectations of the player. Anyone knowingly trying something much older should adjust expectations accordingly going in.

It's like complaining that the special effects in King Kong (1933) don't hold-up.

                Anonymous

You can still respect a game that's aged badly, but it still aged badly. If a game is truly good it will stand the test of time and you wouldn't need to lower your expectations at all.

It doesn't age though; it stays exactly the same was it was when it came out. The player's expectations change, and if you don't manage your expectations accordingly that's your own fault.

                Anonymous

                >The player's expectations change
That's exactly what people mean when they say something has aged they don't mean it literally you autist.
Like I said, some games clearly do age better than others and Megaman Legends isn't one of them. Meanwhile I'd argue that Symphony of the Night(which came out the same year) is a timeless game considering I played it for the first time this year and still loved it.

                Anonymous

If you don't mean it literally and it was always just a semantic difference, why did you continue to push the point instead of just saying that you moron.

And if it's a semantic difference between "the game has changed" and "the people have changed", only one of those is actually fricking correct.

Next time just say "I don't like some older games" instead of speaking in riddles. No one cares if you grew up and don't like how the game plays anymore but clearly that's a you-issue and many other people myself included don't feel the same at all. I played this game for the first time like a month ago and outside of like two-minutes of adjusting myself, not once did I think "wow I wish this played like a game made today". I thought it was timeless.
What if I think Symphony of the Night aged like shit because I don't like how it plays?

                Anonymous

If you believe it plays like shit in contrast to newer games in the genre, like say Hollow Knight, and you expressed that with the phrase "it aged poorly" everyone would know what you mean even if they don't necessarily agree.
                Its a common phrase, dude.

                Anonymous

                >speaking in riddles
lol you definitely have autism most people can understand what I mean just fine, you're just really defensive of this game because you played it as a kid I get it.
You're free to dislike Symphony of the Night, but the general consensus from fans of the genre is that it's still one of the best metroidvanias. I don't need to tell people to lower their expectations if they want to play it, the game holds up because of its exceptional level design and progression.
What is exceptional about Legends' gameplay exactly? Everything it tried to do, countless games have done much better since. There is zero reason to play it anymore if you don't care for the art or story.

both of those examples are incredibly nebulous though which is that anon's point. you can easily handwave them by claiming the opposite without further justification (and plenty have in the case of SOTN) because it doesn't actually mean anything
all this harping on about objectivity feels pretty misguided with respect to a phrase that's about as objective as saying "I like it" or "I didn't have that issue"

How do you play a game, have fun, than the passage of time has it that you dislike the game? Sure they had limitations but a game's fun is objective. It doesn't stop being fun some years later. You can say "from a modern perspective these mechanics are hard to grasp", or "UI isn't as smooth", but in the end of the day it's the same game. It doesn't become shit just hard to understand

Actually shit I had a great example from personal experience. I played Fallout 1 when I was 12 at 2012. I didn't really get it, but through some trial and error I managed to beat it. It was a lot harder experience compared to 90s children playing it I grant you, but I didn't just hate the game. Hell, I came away with similar thoughts as was the consensus on Ganker some years later.

It's really not that hard to understand. You might love a game as kid when you have lower standards and play anything you can get your hands on, but when replaying it many years later its flaws are much more noticeable now after experiencing games that play better. This happens to plenty of people's favorite childhood games.

I disagree on principle with this. It almost implies that gameplay mechanics are all heading towards some singularity of "perfect gameplay" where every game will play the same because it's what the standard demands of it.

That's assuming people playing it for the first time on release didn't go through that same experience. I only played SM64 a couple of years ago and I'm sure my first steps and learning curve were pretty much the same as people playing it on release and it still blew my mind with how good the gameplay was once you get accustomed to the controls.

You are disagreeing with something very demonstrable, and your slippery slope implication just isn't true. There's a reason MML2 has gameplay improvements over 1, my man.

What? I don't think that, but industry standards for things like controls and framerates exist now for a reason. They are objectively better for the vast majority of players compared to how they were in PS1 games.
