Ausjank. Also there's a funny story from the lead programmer, Andrew Davie.
>While we were testing [The Three Stooges] we had a problem with the sprites glitching. Took us a while to realize that the OAM table was _dynamic_ RAM. Now, TTS was a very stingy game that only updated the OAM every couple of frames. What was happening was the NES we were using, at least the particular revision we had, when the PPU would warm up, the OAM decay kept getting shorter and shorter. If I sprayed the PPU with a can of freeze spray to cool it off, the sprites would quit glitching. However, we did eventually modify the game code to go easier on the machine.
oiy? they were doing TV shows in the 50s-60s (although towards the end it was obvious that they were getting too old to handle slapstick comedy) and that period is the Three Stooges that boomers mainly remember. my dad said he was banned from watching their TV show as a child because my autist grandparents thought they were a bad influence on children.
I was 11 yrs old in 1990 and I watched the stooges after saturday morning cartoons were on, around 11 or noon. I knew them about as much as I knew looney tunes
Fester's Quest came out before the Addams Family movie, too. The most recent thing would have been the old TV show. Jaws was also pretty old at the time the NES game came out. That console was a little weird like that.
At the time yeah Fester's Quest would have probably seemed an odd choice. Addams Family has endured over the years though whereas Gilligan's Island is basically a forgotten series to younger generations
>what 11 year old in 1990 cared about the Three Stooges anyway?
I was born in 88 but we had a handful of Stooges VHS tapes and I loved that shit. I played the hell out of the NES game as a child without a hint of irony.
That being said, the fact that we haven't gotten a Three Stooges belt scroller by 2023 is a crime
May as well call R-Type a side scroller. It technically describes a significant aspect of the game sure, but as a way to describe how it plays it's an absolutely dogshit term.
Stoogeheads know this one of the greatest games of all time, but sadly it's overlooked due to not having Mario or Zelda on the cover.
Food fight minigame best minigame. I saved those starving orphans by literally wasting food.
the shows were on quite often as a kid in the 90s. they are still hilarious and worth watching. i remember them being a benchmark if you stayed up all night they would be on tv. i would rent the game periodically. i found the board game style very fun. i even bought that weird 2002 ps1 rerelease
Due to reruns and longevity of certain things, 80s/90s kids wound up with games based on shows their parents grew up with. Like it never seemed strange to me that there were Jetsons, Flintstones, and Wacky Races games, because those shows were on TV.
We actually almost had an SNES Zorro game developed by Irem, ~4 years before the 1998 film
>We actually almost had an SNES Zorro game developed by Irem, ~4 years before the 1998 film
Great loss. I mean, unironically.
Zorro was a big deal for me personally
There was a local tv channel that was constantly rerunning a Filmation series, which I did watch every time. Then there was Disney's animated series with that cool technopunk-ish vibe. Then the japanese anime where they gave him a fuggin henshin sequence
Makes me sad that nobody cares about Zorro anymore.
Euro here. I had no idea who the frick the three stooges were before the internet. I did, however, see the game in Lethal weapon 3 where Renee Russo had it running on her computer. Game seemed fun.
Three Stooges were strangely popular for 1990s kids. I would bet their heirs needed money and sold it cheap to networks. There was even a made for network TV movie in the mid 90s about the Stooges

welcome to NMOS chips. they behaved more like analog electronics than modern stuff does.
Boomers weren't even born when The Three Stooges were around.
oiy? they were doing TV shows in the 50s-60s (although towards the end it was obvious that they were getting too old to handle slapstick comedy) and that period is the Three Stooges that boomers mainly remember. my dad said he was banned from watching their TV show as a child because my autist grandparents thought they were a bad influence on children.
Next to that their movies from the 30s-40s were rerun on TV so boomers probably saw those too.
>and that period is the Three Stooges that boomers mainly remember
You have no clue what you are talking about.
I was 11 yrs old in 1990 and I watched the stooges after saturday morning cartoons were on, around 11 or noon. I knew them about as much as I knew looney tunes
Same here and my mom bought me that game for Christmas too and it was fun.
>I remember being happy unlike today
They were very popular in reruns at the time. Same deal as the Gilligan's Island, Lone Ranger, and Addams Family games.
i watched the 3 stooges with my grandma as a kid
Fester's Quest came out before the Addams Family movie, too. The most recent thing would have been the old TV show. Jaws was also pretty old at the time the NES game came out. That console was a little weird like that.
Parents would me more willing to buy a game for their kid from an IP they recognized and liked as kids too.
Yup. Plus given the success of the NES every IP owner was in a hurry to capitalize, regardless of whether or not it made sense.
Weirdest one to me is Gilligan's Island of all things getting a game
weirder than picrel? not only was it before the first movie but it was centric to a side character from the show
At the time yeah Fester's Quest would have probably seemed an odd choice. Addams Family has endured over the years though whereas Gilligan's Island is basically a forgotten series to younger generations
What's the story behind it? Didn't the main designer dreamed about it or something like that?
>The Adventures of Gilligan's Island
Adventures that occur on Gilligan's Island, yes.
The title implies it’s the island itself going on adventures though.
actually this was a port of the Cinemaware Three Stooges game on home computers
everyone I knew as a kid fricking loved the stooges. even the 20 year old I dated in 2010 watched the stooges new years marathon every year
They ran reruns of popular b&w classics like the three stooges and the little rascals all the time in the late 80s/early 90s.
Yep. Born in 86 and grew up on Little Rascals, I remembering being shocked when I learned how old it actually was.
i did. it was definitely on tv in the late 80s/very early 90s can't remember what channel had it, but i watched it a lot. also, frick shemp.
Frick shemp? You know he was an og stooge right? Like he is Moe's brother, curly is the cousin. Idk what Joe is.
Moe, Shemp and Curly were all brothers. Joe was their attempt at replacing Shemp and Curly after they both died.
>frick shemp.
This deserves a ban. I don't come to /vr/ to read this trash.
>what 11 year old in 1990 cared about the Three Stooges anyway?

>belt scroller
every time you say that another game you want gets pushed back a year.
Sorry, I mean a Three Stooges rooty tooty punchy boot scooty

They're called "strolling donnybrooks"
Who the frick on /vr/ is wanting a game coming out now?

There was a Zorro game on the C64 a decade before that.

Zorro is awesome. A lot of those pre-Superman superheroes like Zorro and The Phantom really need to make a comeback for good period piece fare.
I m boomer hard too. Would you mind turning around for a bit, anon?
Unironically me. My parents bought a bunch of Stooges vhs tapes, I loved these frickers as a kid.
#ShempNation

The perfect remake doesn't exis...
It's on GBA too, like most Amiga anticlassics (Soccer Kid, James Pond 2)
