it's not a masterpiece but i wouldn't call it total shit, especially if they fixed the bugs.
but anyway, that wasn't the point. im very surprised to see a game straight up mentioning slavery like it's an afterthought and not delving into wokeness. in the year 2024. a pleasant surprise that is. you guys do whatever the frick you want, keep playing dragon smegma i dont know.

I would call it total shit. It has zero creativity, is never spooky, a badly written plot, and is extremely buggy. I don't know why you think it's somehow "not woke" just because they mention a plantation in Louisiana had slaves once. The devs are still dangerhairs that managed to squeeze in some lesbians, granted in a fairly restrained way.

        >it's not a masterpiece but i wouldn't call it total shit
It is. It just prostitutes the legacy of alone in the dark to become a shitty REmake clone where you just walk around and shoot zombies for hours, then you pick up a melee weapon and witness the shittiest melee combat since early 2000's.
Its amazing how predictable this site is, the moment a game drops that is mediocre and no one really cares about it you flock to suck it off and call it some hidden gem. Some games are just mediocre and thats it.

I heard if you change the aim sensibility for 4 the game is actually pretty good.
It's just AA/a bit low budget, but still better than modern Resident Evil (RE6/7/Village).
When something is made with fans instead of moronic companies, we get this and Tomb Raider Remaster with updated graphics.

Alone in the Dark Remake (2024), like the first survival horror ever that inspired Resident Evil.

I think the first Alone in the Dark is a great game. I was really disappointed seeing how different this one is. Having other characters around instead of being locked alone in a mansion that wants to kill you completely kills the vibe

Because AAA is mortified at the idea of anything "niche", because it means they can't try the "game for everybody", all AAA games want to make because it guarantees a wide net for money.

AA/Indie doesn't give a shit because profit comes second to making solid games, buggy or janky as comes with the territory. ESPECIALLY European ones.

the writer cassandra is described as creole, which means she's mixed, i assume. possibly from european colonizers and latin american. from the picture in her file she doesn't look black but in gameplay i think they just recolored the model of the black servant.

Game needed SOMETHING to set it apart. Sanity mechanic, some enemies with some actual mechanics, a unique weapon. Just give me SOMETHING to not make it a completely trite experience in an over saturated genre. The Evil Within costs pennies and is a much more successful execution of most of this game's concepts. Hell I think the RE2 remake is 10 bucks cheaper and still goes on sale a lot, that game definitely does the the survival horror better.

      Anonymous

of course remake 2 is better, it's the blueprint for all of these games that are coming out (alan wake, callisto protocol, silent hill 2).
clearly if someone is considering playing this he already has played remake 2. so it's just for people who really want their fix of survival horror.
but anyway i think this game would have worked better as an until dawn style game.

Games are supposed to improve or put a spin on products that they iterate on. This game does no such thing. It isn't even a survival horror game; they advertise scarce ammo on the store page, yet I capped (why are there ammo caps???) pistol rounds before the first enemy in the game even appears.
I agree basically any other style of game would have been better.

          >Games are supposed to improve or put a spin on products that they iterate on.
but in reality, they're games with small budget who despite having the names of popular franchises, are first experiences for their developers. nothing will come close to remake 2 in quality.

It's not a budget issue lmao. There's 2 homosexual celebrities in this game! It's just a simple lack of creativity. They couldn't come up with 1 single unique spook, they couldn't even put a single interesting weapon in the game.

      Anonymous

The weapons are so disappointing. Once I got the shotgun it dawned on me the game doesn't actually have an inventory and there was only one more slot for another weapon. I knew it'd have to be some kind of automatic fire gun, almost certainly a Thompson, and that would all the weapons in the game.
      Sure enough.

They just made a game about Lovecraftian horror.

Also it's a AAa game so they don't have to care as much about profit first because they know normies won't give a shit about Alone in the Dark.

As for the game itself, I pirated it (can't afford it), and frankly I'm more surprised at how good it is. I was expecting "Sinking City" levels of AA where the story/mystery is fun but the combat is total ass.

Combat was actually quite decent, except for that Riverboat bit with the crabs.

I'm also pleasantly surprised at how the ending played out. I was totally expecting them to pull a "UH OH YOU DIDN'T GET ALL THE COLLECTABLES, NO TRUE ENDING FOR YOU homosexual". but thankfully not.

    I'll say two things.
    1. They know how to go from 0-100% really fast in terms of situations
    2. Above ALL else, it's not Alone in the Dark Illumination, so congratulations THQ Nordic.

Blasting Shub-Niggurath with constant Tommy Gun ammo is why I love Lovecraftian as a horror style.

Also spoiler question: So was The Dark Man ever really a part of the plot? Or was it just the Shub Niggurath cult at Derceto using magic to trick Jeremy to give them the new lines to sing at St. John's?

      Anonymous

      >Also spoiler question
I take it as the former really. It does seem like a lot of the world building is absent from the game and your question highlights this.

        Anonymous

I mean because they really lean on him and Shub being around, but by the end he kinda fricks off. Which sucks because I was expecting him to speak up since he's usually the more "fricks with humanity" guy since he's not braindead like most Lovecraftian horrors.

There wasn't really any worldbuilding in the original Alone in the Dark, it's just a haunted house using Lovecraft motifs to drive the spooky shit. Same deal here.

If anything I was disappointed they got rid of the cursed Zombie pirate stuff.

I said DECENT. and compared it to sinking city. Have you actually played Sinking City?

Frankly it felt as good as it needed to be. That's my whole point of the remake; that it's good for what it is and what it wanted/needed to be. I wasn't expecting them to change anything up for Alone in the Dark the Reboot/make. I just wanted a Fun Lovecraftian horror game and they provided. So I'm happy.

        >Like what's the deal with the talismans? If you need them to traverse mindscapes or w/e, why don't Lottie or Bastiste need them?

To be fair Carnby/Emily didn't need 'em when they first slipped into Spooky French Quarter. I guess it's more a side effect of reality being fricked at Derceto with all the occult shit on top of Jeremy playing with his Talisman. What the protags get is basically a "copy" from Jeremy's memory of going to the French Quarter to buy it at the voodoo shop.

Far as we can tell, Batiste and his sister, either slipped in, or knowing Lottie is more into the occult, she probably has her own way of traversing.

        >Where are they sending you, if it's mindscapes then how did Pelosi apparently use one to time travel?

The locations we get sent to are mostly Jeremy's memories, or places inspired by Jeremy's imagination. The library and the spanish guy are his "happy place". Sometimes however Nylartotep fricked around with the protags by sending them to places more based on them or just wherever because he likes fricking with humans.

        >And why is this entire story apparently being written by the dead author that was in Derceto?

Honestly I think most of the game is taking bits and references to other horror games and this was just a homage to Alan Wake if anything. I guess because she has that power, he's gonna use it and her last of her time on Earth to try to "make it right"?

She obviously knew how the talismans function because she's the one that taught Jeremy how to use them. She presumably knew this because the art colony was into the occult. There's a letter from her about what she'll do if she ever wants to see them again, which must mean she could travel back again if she wanted to.
What's the explanation for how any of that could be done if not with the talisman?

Maybe try picking a GOOD AA game then. This game literally has nothing going for it.
              No atmosphere.
Story that reads like the movies my friends and I made in 6th grade.
Linear as frick so no real exploration.
Gameplay that I'd call "serviceable" at my very most generous.
And puzzles you'd need to be legitimately lobotomized to find entertaining.
It's not even bug free. What's it got going for it? The name Alone in the Dark and the fact boots up when you press play?

NTA, but I think they just don't want to admit he's glazing over alot of rough spots:

            >The Plot Holes
            >Where did The Dark Man go?
            >The Talismans
            >The dodgy combat
            >The """Stealth"""
            >The spammy Melee combat

As for why? Who knows. I don't blame him though. We're all desperate for some quality that isn't the AAA slop.

The random thrown items you can pick up into an inventory and are only ever bricks or bottles of alcohol.

The ending where the writer has like 8 characters that have done nothing all game and with no way to wrap any of them up satisfyingly, the game just suddenly becomes Mortal Kombat.
I'm not sure if it was meant to be somewhat comedic but I was laughing really hard.

How do none of these games learn from each other? I do not fricking get it. The Sinking City, the Call of Cthulu game, the Callisto Protocol. They're all so similar and made so many similar mistakes. Why did they not learn from each other and build? I wish Alan Wake 2 came out earlier. I feel like this game could have drawn a lot from it in a positive way (at least in gameplay and design. The story stuff they actually did end up drawing? Iiiiiiidk about that one).

You have to HOLD the button too. Can't just pick them up, have to hold and aim or else you like "quickthrow" it.

Yeah, as hard as I've been on the game I can at least admit for what's the dev's first attempt at a game like this it could have been a hell of a lot worse. They just need to try and actually do better with the next one. Take some real risks, in both gameplay and story.

                >hidden lore in the fully voice acted item descriptions that's not included in the written ones

So what was the point of Emily lugging around that painting by Jeremy for? I was waiting for some sort of payoff, but it's just kind of there hanging off her shoulder for the whole game.

You erase it with paint thinner in her extra ending, whatever that's supposed to mean. Something about trauma maybe. While this game is ripping off Alan Wake and RE2 remake and doing bland Lovecraft shit, it also tries to be Silent Hill.
This is the ending where Emily makes the sign of the Dark Man that she could not have possibly known.

Alot of references, and read lore ala the first games. Otherwise the plot's very different.

It isn't anything like it. Some names are reused. That's about it.

Structure wise, not really. It's more like Eternal Darkness where you have your manor setting that you can explore in relative safety. Then you're occasionally pulled to these dream worlds, which are more action oriented.

Well that sucks, the issues with AITD1 are entirely down to primitive graphics and gameplay, the actual writing/voice acting remains rather good, the plot would only need minor expansion to provide more context for in-game actions, otherwise the remake aspects could be concentrated entirely on making the graphics and atmosphere shine and the gameplay a lot smoother.
