I agree with the sentiment but you'd be much better off investing in like 20TB of storage space and just pirating every game and emulator that currently exists for posterity. I'm working on doing just that. They will absolutely crack down on piracy on a government/ISP level by the time your kid is even a young adult. Both intel and Microsoft are already working on hardware and OS software respectively that narcs the user. The old morons that don't understand the internet are dying off and newer younger predators that do understand how to abuse the tech are taking their places.

10Tb of high speed nvme storage is like $2k by itself. Add a 4090 to that and you're almost there without any other components, to say nothing of the price of a 4k/144hz monitor to actually utilize the hardware and that's 40 or more inches so you can comfortably watch movies on it.

What causes this? I have two friends that are more childish today in their 30s than they were when we met in high school. I'm talking superhero t-shirts to formal occasions, house covered in toys and trash, and thousands of dollars worth of gadgets they never use like snowboards, 3d-printers, and even a fricking crossbow in one instance - all collecting dust completely unused after the dopamine purchase.

I dont even think it's nostalgia because again - these guys weren't even into this stuff when we were kids. It feels like they've just been poisoned by modern ideas of more stuff=happier and they buy things on impulse that they'll realistically never use. Probably wont surprise anyone that both of the guys im talking about are on antidepressants. It also won't shock anybody but theyre of the "i just don't have to buy the mtx" camp and it also won't shock anyone that they do, indeed, buy a ton of mtx. It's like arguing with a child - they don't know the first thing about themselves, nevermind the world.

    Paywalls keep the rabble out.

      Anonymous

Simply put a lot of the people who screech against normies are normies themselves.
Every time we shat on microtransactions someone popped up out of somewhere to defend them and mock any opposition. Not everyone was a paid shill, there just exists a type person that does not give a shit, maybe he was ok financially as a kid and could use daddy's credit card to get ahead of what he thought were *poorgays*.
A lot of asian targeting games came out and were widely adopted. You can see:
      >LoL getting huge despite a Pay2Win model over Dota
      >The rise of MOBAs over RTS
      >Valorant becoming bigger than CS, despite pay2win model + intrusive spyware
      >Asian MMOs becoming huge
      >blizzard normalizing subscription payments via WoW
      >games as a service model coming into being, renting everything
      >crypto gaming, which is abysmal but has money flowing
Each and every one of these was cancer the time it came out, but enough people hopped on to make it feasible for big companies. However much fun people had, the financial model was death itself.

A lot of this type of moronic mentality.
Paying for a fully priced game is no longer enough, now you need ingame purchases and monthly subscriptions to keep muh rabble out.
It will get to a point of paying per hour played, mark my words.

        Anonymous

Oh no, they will have a monthly subscription model just like tons of old games.
Face the facts, games spend millions on development these days. If you just want the cheap option, just buy indie games, a lot of times they're better anyway.

physical DLC is the only defensible objectively fine way to do it. Youre getting a hardcopy you can use in the future if your console dies and you can share it. that disc was also probably half intended for LAN play.

20 years is a long time. A lot of the people defending mtx now grew up surrounded online by paid marketeers pretending to be normal users on discussion forums, and then they internalized that as the blueprint for being a "fan" of something. So now you have an entire generation who think that acting as paid shills themselves but for free is the same thing as online discussion.
