I'm noticing an uptick in people playing a new game and saying "Oh yeah, it was great, I loved it, amazing game...but it wasn't as hard as Dark Souls so 6/10". Doesn't matter what genre, people are mindbroken by the "muh difficulty" meme.

It means that difficulty can be necessary for the design to work.

Not just for Dark Souls. See how the common jrpg devolves if one grinds levels and removes the challenge. No more clever tactics and resource management needed and so on.

Video games haven't been made with difficulty in mind since the fourth generation. If there are zoomers calling for harder video games, you shouldn't expect this trend to die any time soon since it's such a recent evolution (or really a return to form).

  12. 2 weeks ago

Literally nobody, not even the people who like hard games has ever said that. If someone criticizes a game for being too easy, it lacks what is necessary to make up for the lack of challenge. Also, 90% of complaints that games are too easy are just that: complaints that a game is too easy, not not hard. A game can be "not hard" but also so mindnumbingly easy as to be a farce. If you give the player 30 different mechanics to use, but every encounter can be easily beaten by spamming one button, you have an objectively bad difficulty level for your game.

If you need a developer to have their foot on your throat for you to want to experiment with all the mechanics in the game, you're not even human.

no it's only a game when there are parameters and limitations you have to work within. if you dont have to work within the parameters, you're playing a flash physics toy, not a video game.

games are purely about what players find to be fun. it's subjective. high difficulty only works when the mechanics are solid and the game is playable within the rules it sets forth. THIS is why people prefer games like dark souls, not just that the difficulty is there, but that the game sticks to its own rules at all times which allows the player to instinctively react to the moment to moment gameplay. you have to have a good core game with systems that work and are fun to explore.

If there isn't a change in state from the player's actions, then the media isn't interactive. If this change in state is inevitable regardless of the player's specific actions, then the media is only as interactive as a powerpoint. So games have to have goal states, and those goal states must not be achievable via every possible course of action, or they're not games. The difference between actions that lead to the goal state and actions that don't cannot be arbitrary, because without some modicum of logic it's more a noisemaker than a game.
So, what distinguishes actions that contribute to the goal state from actions that don't? Difficulty.
Thus, I would argue that games are by definition adversity simulators.

One of Ganker's cult classics is Dynasty Warriors which is a braindead button masher.
I don't think anyone has ever argued that EVERY game needed to be "challenging" but there definitely need to be games that are themed around testing the player's skills and dedication because it's just fun and games that are known for this should not be dumbed down to be accessible to casuals.

Games can be more than adversity simulators. Games can provide a variety of experiences. Adversity is also a valid one, but not the only one. Game developers should know how to evoke a certain experience within the player, and when it is appropriate to do so.

I think the value of Dark Souls is showing that you are, in fact, allowed to discomfort or inconvenience your player sometimes, because that is something that many games seemed to avoid more and more.
