Games with good writing.

Name them.
Because vidya writing mostly sucks.

      >Planescape Torment
Yes. It suffers from rushed/unfinished content, like all large games. And I think some technical details of the immortality could use rework/clarifying.
      But it is well written.

Sorry, but Dagon boss fights kind of ruins the whole thing.

I love the writing in Planescape Torment. It's got this 90s autismo terry pratchet thing going on sometimes but honestly I find that really charming, and when it wants to get serious, it does a phenomenal job introducing smart, creative fantasy stuff, complicated characters and backstories, super writing-heavy side quests that take beautiful turns. Pretty shit gameplay but I gotta recommend the writing.

Writing that achieves its goals. Small or great.

      Human revolution was really bad.
      1. Put some seemingly meaningful visual metaphors.
      2. Mechanical implants are just like <insert some political issue and don't explore it>.
That's it. That's the whole writing.

Can we define a set of criteria for a game's writing to be considered good? Does the presentation rely on how well it meshes with or is conveyed by the interactive nature of the medium? Do we need to worry about the characterization of the NPCs and player character in the game and how that characterization is implemented? Does a game that takes away control from you or forces you to read through large amounts of prose have better writing than a game that gets is plot points and characters and lore across in passing?

I'm not trying to be contentious, I just want to know what good writing in an interactive medium should be judged on before I try to answer.

Stop trying to have an actual discussion. Around here we just make claims and insult each other

      1. consistent story, it might be simple but it should be logical and obey the rules established at the beginning of the game. Fahrenheit has bad writing because it's like 3 stories ductaped together and a plot twist with ALIENS ruins the thriller and detective parts. You can change the rules at the end but it's a very dangerous move
      2. believable characters. they shouldn't be just pawns, they should have motives, and backgrounds for such motives and must reveal themselves through interaction with other characters
      3. dialogs, they should be good

        Anonymous

        >they should have motives, and backgrounds for such motives and must reveal themselves through interaction with other characters
What if you can find out the motive of the character through non-dialogue means, like a note or an email on a computer where they discuss their motives?

Avoiding obvious inconsistencies and plot holes, having a believable and lived in world, workable dialogue and sensible exposition are good.

Maybe great writing is the ability to treat themes with substance, or at the very least to create an environment in which the player can immerse himself with little interruption

13 sentinels and it isn't even close. It fascinating how it takes a billion different sci fi tropes that seem basically impossible to explain rationally and then very neatly tie up every single detail and doing it in a way where by the end you go "yeah, huh that really is the only way they could have done that. Huh."

Fear Effect games have terrible writing. Its all quirky lol so random from one plot point to another. The only cool thing about those games are the FMV backgrounds which are fairly stylish and puzzles are interesting and on occasion quite challenging.

Worth playing once but its extremely inconsistent

What specifically you mean be good writing?

Underrail has engaging npcs and dialogue. It's not phoetic or anything but there are some very interesting quests in the game.

Fear and Hunger, has a little amount of dialogue in game, but works well in a game which focuses mostly on environmental storytelling. The dialogue give just enough of context to make you want to explore the dungeon of fear and hunger

Writing doesn't nessesarily mean only written in game dialogue and item descriptions.

Inconsider game to have a good "writing" when it makes me want to immerse my self in the game's world.

Planescape did some realli simple but super fricking clever things here.
    1. Companions witholding information from you. You can find out about it soon through natural gameplay means.
    2. Companions doing mistranslation on purpose to withold bits of information from you.
You can realize it with somebody else doing translation or getting stats high enough to do translation yourself.

ice cold take here but other than Disco and Planescape, not much comes to mind. I'd settle for stuff like TLOU1, it's simple, pretty effective and had actual voice acting.

With how rare genuinely good writing is, i'd prefer a game just be interesting and generally know when to shut the frick up, and have good pacing.
