If there was a Tomb Raider 1-esque "super-secret-but-doesn't-really-exist-gotcha-you-gullible-motherfuckers" movement cheat to get a nude scene with the blind cat girl I would do it in a heartbeat. It's not the character I have a problem with. It's the deluded fanbase. I understand subtext. I understand dialogue. I can read between the lines. I know what's being said in a scene and what's being left unsaid. This isn't my first rodeo. I didn't use that Tomb Raider example as randomly either. Lara Croft, as per the original developer's own words, was a female protagonist designed to be in this sort of...lofty position--sexuallly, that is. The kind of woman you couldn't really see settling down with anyone, perhaps not even for a one-night stand.
A sort of mythological female warrior deity whose mind is so singularly focused on battle there is no time for anything else. Yes, there is sexual appeal. Sexual draw. And the character knows it. I vehemently disagree. Urianger has been the most consistent of the scions, with only a little lull during Stormblood. Not only is he often heavily involved in the actual plot, but he also faces real ideological challenges and keeps having great moments in almost every expansion. He also has one of the best reasons to stick around still.

ShB had his relation towards Eulmore where that whole thing was around him. And EW has he and Alisaie with their family situation and the exploration of Garlemald is mostly based around them. But it's more that he and Alisaie constantly get focus in screentime and dialogue.

He doesn't have to be. I said he is constantly present in some way, not that he's super important. In ARR he had the whole thing with Moenbryda and Elidibus, in HW he's the one to track Y'shtola down and has the deal with the WoDs and the business with Unulkalhai, in SB he has his smallest role with just giving a neat prophecy and later on discussing the fake echo with Krile, in ShB he has tons to do with Il Mheg, G'raha's "betrayal", heartfelt moments with Ryne and so on, in EW he has a great payoff moment with Moenbryda's parents and builds a bond with the Loporrits, acting as their main intermediary. Something else that's funny though, since people are talking a lot about Y'shtola, if you go back and pay attention to it you'll notice that her and Urianger actually kinda switched roles during the course of the game. Urianger was the one to give exposition regarding primals, aether, elemental concepts and so on. It's just that in addition to that he also actually had something to do.
Disagree with Urianger having "tons to do" in ShB, his whole inner conflict in ShB was precisely that Exarch asked him to not do anything at all. Just pretend nothing's happening and not spill the beans when Y'shtola starts demanding to know why WoL is turning into a bomb. Urianger's biggest act in all of ShB is just raising a hand to stop her from blowing Exarch's head off mid-ritual (and cheering up Ryne).
Keep in mind when I say something like "tons to do", I mean it in relation to other side characters.

I think the worst part is how Alphinaud isn't the one to bring a conclusion to the whole Eulmore thing. He's part of the introduction but never actually connected to it. The writers tried to make some kind of allegory between him and Vautry but that didn't work at all, imo.

I would have to go back and check it for myself, but I distinctly remember back when I played through it the first time thinking to myself "this seems really contrived".
If I remember right, it's Y'shtola who suggests the ronkan ruins might have info on Elidibus in the patches because they already proved useful before but she had no time to study them, and she is the translator of the Scions, and later she does the same with the ruins in... I can't remember what's it called, the underwater place with the fat fish boss. That place where later Elidibus kidnaps her. I don't imagine many more ways of being the driving force than being the one who both suggests it and is also the only one who can do it.
I keep seeing people insisting G'raha is thirsty for WoL and I just don't see it. He doesn't act like someone with a crush, he acts like a fanboy. He never says anything romantic or that heartfelt, the way he talks I'd rather think he wants to BE WoL, not be WITH WoL, he just thinks following us is the best way to achieve it. Really with the characterization that WoL is all about ADVENTURE and constantly seeking new challenges it feels like Venat would have been a good match for that. Compare to G'raha who seemingly only wants to come along to be with (You). I guess Y'shtola sorta fits that as well though, from more of an academic sense.
Y'shtola I think makes a good match in her being interested in the learning sense of adventuring, she's there for all the nitty-gritty autism and spending five hours looking at murals on a wall.
Treating the WoL like a bland slate for a moment, you can go any which way.
His equal: a similarly adventurous spirit with the wisdom and experience of ages, who can spin a tale about the events in her life and is equally as excited to behold new vistas as he is. Who loves being rough and tumble as much as she enjoys contemplating new hypotheses about the inner workings of things. Like Venat. Then there's also all the mentor/predecessor stuff to add into that.
His opposite: someone who is more bookish, more about the things the WoL isn't about. To accrue new knowledge and use it in practice, to broaden her scientific horizon. In that way, they can both enrich each other. Like Y'shtola.
The ambitious: someone who aspires to become the WoL's equal. Who tries unflaggingly to keep up with his pace and vows that she will never take the easy route out by resting on her laurels. Always trying to be a better version of herself. This would be Alisaie. There's an argument to be made, however, that Alisaie's bare, wide-eyed admiration makes it hard for her to be an equal partner, but that might not always be the case.

This is how I feel about most characters I particularly dislike. All except one.
Fordola. She's fucking indefensible after that story they released about her. When it turned out that she, in fact, was NOT justified in punishing her own people that hard and was actually shown kindness and understanding by someone who even fucking died for her. At that point it's not a matter of her being badly used, she's just awful herself from start to finish.
I genuinely believe that Fordola is the absolute worst non-trivial character in this game. I know that she's pretty and has a sexy VA and all that, but she's just awful and I was actively suffering every time the story went back to being about her in some way.
I could get behind her plot back in SB. Like, I could see what she was coming from. Then it turns out that FUCKING YDA, A RESISTANCE SOLDIER, ACTUALLY SHOWED HER UNDERSTANDING AND COMPASSION AND EVEN ACTUALLY SACRIFICED HERSELF FOR HER AND SHE FULLY KNEW.
So in short, she was just scum. Easily manipulated scum that Zenos got to betray all her principles and go against everyone who ever loved her with merely a couple centences.

What you're describing is something that happens on accident and is clearly not the intention of the writers or what you're supposed to take away from the character. You can't just ignore every other part of the storytelling in that regard.
Fordola is written to be admirable. She also has more of an eastern philosophy about her (they don’t give a fuck about war crimes). It’s why they keep her alive anon. It is intended. Her character in general exists as a foil to lyse, another young woman on the other side of the conflict going through her own personal growth.
Neither Lyse nor Fordola grow in any way whatsoever though. The story pretends that they do, but they really don't. Lyse is just as naive and stupid at the end of SB as she is at the beginning of it. Fordola is just as selfish and ruthless at the end of SB as she is at the beginning of it.
