>No! Stop describing things concisely! That's cringe!
How the frick does "boomer shooter" describe anything? It's a completely nonsensical term. I don't even know what it's supposed to mean.
it's a game where you shoot boomers, like L4D
it means it's not some cod/gow modern garbage.
Then use a word that means "not modern" and call it a retro shooter.
the original cod is retro now, not specific enough
kys
Why does the original CoD not count in this category of "not modern shooters" when it isn't a modern shooter? If you want to be specific, describe what this category of games is defined by.
boomer shooter means doomlike, but since doomlike was already taken to mean FPS before FPS was a thing, and boomers means old and the age period of most people who actually played doom at the time, it came to mean that. Maybe retro shooter could work, but retro is associated to 2D platform games in zoomer's brains so they use boomer instead.
Boomer shooter basically means Doomlike games from the 90's. Long, interconnected levels, key collecting, enemies with projectile weapons that you can strafe by, fast movement speed, carrying multiple weapons, health pickups, power ups, no walkie talkie/forced cutscene sections, etc. A common misconception is that if a game is old, it's a boomer shooter. That's false, as games like Dusk and Ion Fury are boomer shooters.
retro fps is a better term
"boomer" is based on a meme that will eventually die out and kind of already has
I don't disagree, but retro also has the connotation of meaning old, which means people will consider Half-Life and Halo CE as "retro shooters", which they are by age, but not the genre of what is considered a boomer shooter. I'll leave the new name to more creative minds than mine, but I suppose in the meantime Doomlike works fine.
fps games that follow an fps design philosophy predating half life. not really very difficult to understand
The term doesn't convey that at all, though.
think doom and quake-like.
>I don't even know what it's supposed to mean.
Doomclone or Quake Clone
It's Serious Sam without the 5 minutes of backtracking per level combined with gimmicks and tryhard edginess

>Yeah let’s refer to the series as “soulsborne”
Frick off morons just call it souls
It's just Zelda without the puzzles, it doesn't need a special title. "Action RPG" more than covers everything FROM has ever made.
If you’re referring to non From games then yes but if you are specifically referring to those games souls is enough
>gameplay
>character action
ooh that ones weird!
Wtf else would you call immersive sims c**t
FPS/RPG hybrids
People that think immersive sims are FPS/RPG hybrids made Deathloop, which isn't an immersive sim.
Ok so what is it then
An FPS/RPG hybrid, because it's made by people who think FPS/RPG hybrid = immersive sim. They failed to make an immersive sim without even knowing it. On other side, Dark Messiah was an immersive sim, but isn't an FPS or an RPG; the presence of upgrade systems don't make a game an RPG. What makes a game an immersive sim is always going to be argued, mainly because so few have ever been made and there remains lots of unexplored potential due to publishers wanting games to follow trends rather than cover what hasn't been done before.
Okay so, it means nothing? good to know!
Also
>Dark Messiah was an immersive sim
>Thief is an immersive sim
>Portal 1 is an immersive sim
>Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is an immersive sim
>Pong is an immersive sim
>Warioware is an immersive sim
thats moronic. games like borderlands and fallout new vegas are literal fps and rpg hybrids yet are differentiated from games that fall under the term immersive sim. immersive sim is a fine term and has been used for ages.
I have never seen anyone use the term immersive until Prey2017 came out
no offense, but you must be young. it was invented in the early 00's and has been used ever since on various gaming forums.
>has been used ever since on various gaming forums.
like
It's a term invented by akrane fanboys to try and rub shoulders with older, much better rpgs.
they are not rpgs...
>UHM ACKSHUALLY ITS NOT REALLY A GENRE ITS ACTUALLY A DESIGN PHILOSOPHY WHICH IS SO VAGUE AND POORLY DEFINED NOBODY REALLY KNOWS WHAT IT MEANS ANYMORE, B-BUT IT'S TOTALLY NOT AN RPG GUISE
Without fail
idk wtf you're talking about
immersive sim was literally coined by warren spector in the early 2000s you moronic zoomer homosexual mutt. why do you just make shit up? a simple google search would prove you wrong.

Fps I mean wtf seriously wtf, I do care about good game quality with added SOUL I dont really give a damn about a trendy zoomer metric

One of the most ass genre titles ever made. Those games aren't defined by the protagonist being a cool dude; it's incidental. You "become" the cool dude by putting on a show with a ton of sick-ass combos and skill moves.
Say what you want about TB, but "spectacle fighter" at describes the actual characteristic of DMC, Bayonetta, etc.
Nah, that's a crap descriptor. "Fighter" is understood to mean head to head. DMC, Bayonetta and those are all just 3D versions of the standard beat-em-up, there's no need for a special genre name.
>Fighter" is understood to mean head to head.
platform fighter
>nintendie cant into larger videogame sphere
Yahtzee invented spectacle fighter, not TotalBiscuit or whoever TB stands for in your post.
Meta. That word just popped up out of nowhere in gaming discussion one day and I've hated it ever since. Damn zoom zoom zoomers.
Toxic. That word has always rubbed by the wrong way.

It's a western thing. CIS and eastern europeans use DD - damage dealer
>anime-style
Anime-style is a fine term but you always have morons who think everything from Japan is anime and call something like Mario anime-style so it kind of loses its meaning.
call something like Mario anime-style
nobody does this
Well I've seen it. People will extend the definition of anime-style very far for some reason.
>everything from Japan is anime
The problem is that this is the case, at least for animation. There is no one style that defines anime, there are countless different ones. So you could draw something to look like PSG or Inferno Cop and call it anime-style and technically be correct. Which is why it's a meaningless term thrown around everywhere just because being a weeb is cool now, even if all that "anime" stuff you're playing are RPGs and VNs by western devs.
you are arguing semantics when everybody short of weeaboos knows that "anime" for the majority of people refers to a very specific style of animation in the west they aren't thinking or caring about where it came from, all they are seeing is how it was drawn/modelled.
>So you could draw something to look like PSG or Inferno Cop and call it anime-style and technically be correct.
Yes, technically correct since anime only means cartoon from Japan, but if you're throwing the term "anime-style game" around in a discussion without further explanations then it's usually understood that you're talking about the current popular anime style, not about outliers like Inferno Cop. If someone tells me Disgaea is an anime style SRPG then I know exactly what to expect.
>There is no one style that defines anime, there are countless different ones. So you could draw something to look like PSG or Inferno Cop and call it anime-style
I know this is being pedantic, but even with the the large amount differences between the styles of anime, 80% of them are still largely comparable enough to point out as being "anime" and the fact you had to list two exceedingly different shows that are explicitly different from pretty much the entire market is pretty disingenuous.
literally 0 people in human history has ever referred to mario as anime style.
The reactions to boomer shooter is entertaining, so it gets a pass for me. "Graphical showcase" is especially cancer.
