Hoenn, as a region, was great. It had a great dex too. And a ton of great revamped mechanics and new content, it truly paved the way for the DS era as well imo. The only really disappointing aspect was its elite 4. And I suppose the in-battle sprites lost soul relative to crystal's animated ones.

      >killed Pokemania
      >barely anyone played Emerald
As much as I love it, it really isn't.

Pokemania was dying anyways. Normies' attention spans only hold so long. Gen 3-5 were genuinely enjoyed by real fans, the wake of pokemania intensified the hype seasons for later gens as well.

I appreciate how the legendaries actually tie in to the region's overall theming. There's the hotter volcanic areas, then a more moderate climate in the middle, then in the east there's the infamous "too much water" part. It isn't some weird, pretentious theme that hardly relates to the game ("truth and ideals"? the frick?) and it's subtle; that is, not being pushed so hard until the climax of the game. As much as I love gen 4 and 5, the theming starts becoming weak the later on you go into the series and they just start adding legendaries for the sake of selling merch. Giratina and Darkrai are cool as frick though so gen 4 gets a pass.

I prefer Gen 5 over Gen 3 and 4. If we're just talking about the primary entries and also ignore the physical special split then I would say Gen 3 is better since I prefer Hoenn to Sinnoh, but if we include remakes, side games, etc. then I'd say Gen 3 and 4 are about equal.

Yeah, like how it cut features, made pokemon legit unable to get without using like three other games and two consoles and other wonderful stuff.

Pokemania died with gen 2 anon. The sales drop off steeply.

When these game out it was crushingly disappointing to find that the game ends after the Pokemon League when in the previous game we'd gotten a whole 2nd region to explore as post game.
Plus all of the real time mechanics and content
    being removed.
How did a game on a more powerful system end up feeling like such a step down?

Yeah, I've always associated geb 3 with disappointment from all missing stuff and lingering feeling of playing a chinese knock-off. In this sense it was peak Masuda-era Pokemon

The Battle Frontier is the only way I can have fun with mainline Pokemon games nowadays because it's the only thing that requires a three digit IQ. The actual Hoenn maingame is okay at best, but a masterpiece compared to modern stuff. I'd put Gen 3 as my second or third favorite Gen overall but this is a shitpost thread anyway so who cares.

I don't think Gen 3 is the best but I do think Hoenn best captures the spirit of adventure out of all the regions

36yrs old yoomer here, gen3 gave us the best games, the best spin-offs, the best designs, the best music, and brought Pokémon to a new level. Only zoomies and nostalgia-boomer disagree.
