It's been effectively replacing communities for the last several years. It's no longer "join the forums and the IRC/vent/teamspeak", it's "join the Discord". All sorts of in-game communities had forums, like TF2 and Starbound, but after Discord started swinging around everyone moved to Discord and it's been amplifying all the gay shit that can happen on forums ever since.

There's a difference in that whereas other chat programs would often be auxiliary and the only communication would often be just regular chatting and organizing vidya shit Discord tries to host the community itself. Vidya companies didn't host their games on Teamspeak or IRC, they hosted them on forums, but nowadays they host them on Discord.
I mean sure, as a chat program it does its function just as well as any other, but design-wise everyone moved to Discord, nobody makes forums anymore.
Forums can be made private just as much as one can set roles on Discord, and information on Discord is about as permanent as that of a forum's, Discord is "private" in the sense that you need an account to join instead of looking at it from the web, but that also led to other gay shit like needing to join on Discord servers for mods because they don't bother with the many modding sites like Nexus, Moddb or even just the forums themselves anymore.
I see your problem, but the point is this is about FFXIV FCs, which are private. You can use a forum to exchange information and organise, but why would you? You probably still need an invitation from someone you met in-game. It's not like you'll find them from outside the game unless they promote themselves for some reason which is rare.
I don't know much about MMOs so I can't comment on that, but I've been in quite the amount of communities that either switched to Discord or have both a forum and a Discord and it's just terrible.
discord brings with it a culture whereas other software didn't, that is the key difference. Software should not bring with a culture. That is why we are up in arms about it. We aren't upset because it's replacing what was previous to it, but what it brings with it.

Although when you google something, you usually find the answer on an overflow/reddit/wiki/git page. The discord just has links to these resources conveniently in one place. I can't remember ever finding a solution on a forum unless it was very niche and private like ptp for example.
Forums are still better for organizing information and slow/delayed posting.
Forums aren't private though, so they're inherently different from a group of players in a guild. You wanna have a communcation tool outside the game to organise things, cause information there is actually kind of permanent unlike the in-game chat which is only visible for the ones currently online and only for as long as they're online.
Not to mention voice chat while playing games with some likeminded idiots being fun.

There were many differences back in the day. Many games didn't have good in-game organization and very few had voice chat (which became necessary for high tier raiding. Or at least , made things much easier for more complex content ) so it was kind of understandable. However generally the amount of users who were on forums, or IRC, or mumble/teamspeak/ventrilo (in order of least to most shitty ) etc...were involved in limited content - it didn't REPLACE in game guild chat for the community aspect. That was the core part of it. The amount of guilds or clans that had a forum with a handful of posts on it, or a chat channel that was mostly a small subgroup from the game who wanted to organize playing other titles or whatnot, or those in voice chat went there when there was an event and left when it was done. The core socialization took place within the game chat itself and that's a big difference now with Discord where you see people with bare chat channels because "everything happens in Discord, which pushes stuff towards insular, clique-ish nonsense.
There's a lot of other shit wrong with Discord too - proprietary, centralized, questionable monetization and data mining/raping pushing out more decentralized alternatives where users rented or hosted their own websites, chat channels, or voice servers etc. Admittedly it did have some ease of use improvements, but these have come to other clients as well - but now its an issue of it being "free", a frickload of features that are normalgay friendly, and easily accessible. Discord has taken its place beside the likes of Twitch, YouTube and social media like Facebook and Twitter in being massive centralized monoliths that have taken over the way people connect to each other (ie note every game dev now has an official discord for their community as the focal point; that is a serious problem.
It's so that you can socialize with people outside the game too. There's no more room for having friends only in-game.

cod isnt a mmo and i doubt that is true. I play mmos. This applies to both WoW and xiv end game raiding for instance. Mechanics apply to the entire group, but you dont need to yell "mechanic on me!" you just need to know what you are supposed to do.

If you're not in the Discord you're not going to hear the callout so I don't think you even have a point. Voice chat is 1000% mandatory for pretty much every raid encounter in existence until you're powercrept so hard that you can ignore mechanics.

Point out the post where I said you don't need to be in the voice channel. I said that only a few select people need to have a microphone. Most strategies do not have that much in terms of mechanic flex. None of the hard mechanics in DSR required voice call outs for instance. And as far as XIV goes, savage obviously does not since pugging without voice is a very common occurrence and week 1 and 2 clears in a pug are very doable.
Normally I’d be in VC where half of everyone is muted during a raid or makes a slight cough, usually waiting for someone to break the awkward silence.

The point of in-game chat is the same as ever. However, most games do not have persistent chat. I think WoW's guild chat is persistent, but it's still way more convenient to use discord if you're going to be posting links, sharing files, or putting things on there that you'll want people to be able to easily see even a few days into the future.

The last Discord I was in a few years ago had this troony that would always bring up politics and everything else out of nowhere. Years later I don't know why I ever fricking used it.
