    >EVERYONE JUST GOT BLASTED BY A SHOTGUN AND ALL THE INTERESTING SETUPS WERE JUST THE CULPRIT'S IMAGINATION
Sounds like you didn't "get" the end to that tea party. It's only one interpretation of what might've happened (or I should say more likely than the rest of them).

I do agree that it's overly long due to alot of repeated dialogue and meandering inner monologues. The best part about the VN is the soundwork and OST.

In any story where it is not clear if it's mundane or magic (supernatural) causing things it always ends up being magic because it's too easy and convenient to write.
Even that EVN The Sekiemeiya or whatever where they jack off how 'serious' the mystery is and tell you to take notes and shit ends up having it be about magic portals

Umineko is just a really long cope apologist story. Believing magic means surrendering to self-delusion and escapism. The real message is: you're too weak to face the truth, you will always be too weak, so why not take the magic pill? It's either that or suicide according to the BS false dichotomy that's been presented here. Any way you slice it, that's what magic means, it's just coated with sugary euphemisms.

No, on the contrary, he truly believes that's a perfectly healthy and responsible message to make in his story. Why try to face your demons and come out on top when you can just use '''''''''''''''''''magic'''''''''''''''''''' to make things go away? What could go wrong? It's not like this will totally come back to bite you in the ass in the future when your brain is incapable of keeping the illusion alive. Like what happens with Maria: eventually she would be unable to delude herself away from the hard, cold truth that her mother was neglecting her in favor of dick and she would snap. The coping mechanism of magic only makes things worse in the long run.

The actual point is that if the "truth" isn't useful to your psyche then there is no reason to know it or accept it. You may have autism.

        Low IQ take, my friend.

I never understood why people argue so much about the "it's cope delusions" vs. "It's going through life in good faith" or however else you want to call it.
I think it's just easier to say that knowing the truth can be painful, and doesn't always offer the closure to feel worth it.

        Anonymous

What is easier at first might not be what's healthier in the long run. Also the author frames magic as clearly being the ''enlightened'' path, while truth seekers can only be bitter, paranoid and depressed (like Ange and Erika).

          Anonymous

truth seekers that only care about who and how are bitter, at least from Umi's narrative

            Anonymous

Yeah, but the author goes out of his way to stablish a false dichotomy between truth and magic. Notice how all the truth seeking characters are framed as failed, pathetic losers or bitter psychos. Is it not possible to overcome your traumas without resorting to escapism? You can't face reality without turning into an edgy suicidal detective? Ridiculous.

              Anonymous

Why is escapism bad inherently bad if you can maintain it?

                Anonymous

Fundamentally? Because it's the same as accepting weakness and giving up on real self-improvement.

And besides that, odds are that you won't be able to maintain the illusion for long, and the more you try to, the more you distance yourself from reality and other people, creating even more problems that you have to force your brain to accommodate or ignore. The more you hold on to the illusion, the more explosive and damaging will be the inevitable snap, the falling of your house of cards, and you will have no more pillars to sustain yourself.

                >giving up on real self-improvement
The only thing that matters here is your happiness. This can be achieved by working, thinking, or both.
                >odds are
Nope, there is no proof that you can't create your own reality and maintain it in your head. You don't even have to distance yourself from others if you don't want to.

                Anonymous

treating escapism as a long term solution is the problem, but I think it's okay to acknowledge that you can't handle something right now and will face it later.
I think that would be a better message, since harping on something without the ability to do anything about it is just you making yourself sick over it.

                Anonymous

Yeah, but there is nothing at the end of Umi that suggests that magic was transitory for Ange. On the contrary, the epilogue reinforces and rewards the views she upheld through most of her adult life.

not surrendering to weakness, it can be the opposite. i know it isnt how its portrsyed in umi, but having irrational hope in the face of misery and tragedy to be a beacon of light for yourself and those around you is different. Believing and hoping you CAN improve even when its not reasonable, that sort of thing. Like having faith you will be able to fight off a pack of wolves surrounding you and your family even though you probably wont be able to when there are no other options.

I agree with you there, but that's not exactly what happens in Umineko. There is a difference between avoiding hard truths and reality and having hope in the unknown, even against all odds. I don't want to get into specifics because it's been a long time since I've read Umi, and it will take a long time for me to build up a solid case with prints and everything, but the gist of it was that Ange had access to the truth in Eva's diary but chose to ignore it because it was painful to deal with. All the last part of the meta-adventure is about preventing the truth from the diary from coming out, after all.

What about them? Most people are probably too connected to the external world to create magic, but some can be whatever they want and live perfectly happy lives. The fact those individuals have a penis then becomes your problem to cope with.

                Anonymous

There's no magic, and that's why delusion can't be viable long term. You can believe as hard as you want but reality will repeatedly intrude upon your fantasies, and you'll run yourself ragged trying to keep up the illusion.

(NTA) I think i believe in the x variety of magic. Believing the currently impossible sometimes makes things possible. will to power, kind of. I think theres a middle ground between "i believe there are people who can shoot lasers with magic spells" and "There is only cause, and effect. every action can be predicted and understood and has no greater meaning beyond their physical form".

See people like you keep getting hung up on the truth versus magic thing. Angie is explicitly fully aware that her parents murdered almost everyone else. The difference between truth and magic in the meta sense is Angie choosing to believe that despite how shit her parents and other family members could be that didn't invalidate the good they did as well.
In universe it was the difference between

Angie being unable to accept that contradiction and defaulting to either.
              >Aunt Eva was a shit my parents were good therefore Eva lied even in the journal
              Or
              >Everyone in my family was a shit without exception

Even for someone like Erika her being able to say Red that her boyfriend cheated doesn't actually mean anything because Witches can say Red for any individual or multiple universes (it's why they can use red on Leon who usually doesn't exist) meaning that there's a chance she breaks up with him and kills herself for no reason (at least in some realities)

If the ending actually focused on that aspect, I might actually enjoy it. It's a beautiful universal message: despite most of us being horrible people, we might still choose to love and forgive (but not condone the evil actions, of course), and remember people not only from their bad side, but also their good side. That being said, that's not what happens at the end of Umi, when Ryukishi goes full on magic retard.

Why would you even consider that dead people that you loved may have committed misdeeds? If they're not around to commit any more then it makes more sense for them to be perfect in your head.

It kinda did. I read it 8 years ago, but that's what I got from it at least. You are focusing on "magic" too much.
It's not like Ange brainwashed herself, she just chose to ignore the murder bullshit and focus on remembering her relatives as a family. What good will it do to her if she finds out who killed who and why. It's not that important, so she chose to move on.

That is the message. You can blame either r07 or the readers for not getting it in the VN but the manga makes it explicit that Ange is well aware her parents are the killers.

Then I blame Ryukishi for failing to convey that message clearly, because the VN conveys a very different message. Is it possible that Ryukishi backtracked due to criticism and decided to tone down the pro-escapism elements in the manga?

In the VN Ange also acknowledges the truth, then she falls into meta-oblivion or something and Battler has to bring her back. When she comes back she takes the magic pill and decides to ignore the truth, because ''magic is real'' and they are all happy in the golden land and everyone who disagrees is a heartless dumb goat.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree. I don't see anything noble about surrendering to weakness because the truth is a hard pill to swallow. I believe that in the real world nothing good can come out of that.

not surrendering to weakness, it can be the opposite. i know it isnt how its portrsyed in umi, but having irrational hope in the face of misery and tragedy to be a beacon of light for yourself and those around you is different. Believing and hoping you CAN improve even when its not reasonable, that sort of thing. Like having faith you will be able to fight off a pack of wolves surrounding you and your family even though you probably wont be able to when there are no other options.

I never really understood the motivation behind the perpetrator in Umineko. Sayo was upset over having a crippled body, plus some other stuff about love involving Battler, George, and Jessica, so he/she...freaked out and decided to go on an overly elaborate suicidal killing spree? The fuck?

      Basically
Yasu having their dick/vagina destroyed meant they didn't think they were lovable. They also learned they wanted to fuck their cousins aka commit incest just like Kinzo. Then finally Battler coming back and they couldn't decide between Joji and Battler they decided to just kill everyone.

The family is full of terrible people, and the servants who weren't rape enablers bullied Sayo. I'm not sure why the cousins (besides Battler) needed to die, though. My first thought would be "jealousy" but it's not like Maria's had an especially great life.
I'm not saying that this justifies blowing up the island, by the way, but I can see why a battered, impulsive, and unstable mind might jump to "all these fucking people need to go NOW" when presented the option.

    >Like what happens with Maria: eventually she would be unable to delude herself away from the hard, cold truth that her mother was neglecting her in favor of dick and she would snap. The coping mechanism of magic only makes things worse in the long run.

We even see that happening in the meta-narrative. I don't remember which chapter, but it's the one where magic girl Maria goes bananas on her mother and torture-kills her repeatedly when she is forced to face the reality of what was happening. Something similar (although obviously without the magic elements) would have happened in real life if Maria lived long enough for that, because coping mechanisms are not healthy in the long run. Ryukishi is a hack, a terrible writer. The premise of Umineko was great and I wanted to enjoy it, but he does nothing of value with it.

I believe in esoteric occultist shit to a degree but you're failing to grasp the basics of it if you think you can completely disregard reality and make up your own instead of using those processes to influence it.

reading someone elses take of umineko is the best way to absolutely not understand umineko. the whole point of r07s works is for each person to derive their own meaning from it. it something you can discuss, but suggesting someone do anything but find their own understanding by reading is against the spirit of the vn to begin with.

        >it something you can discuss, but suggesting someone do anything but find their own understanding by reading is against the spirit of the vn to begin with.
your logic makes no sense. if discussions are fine, it is inevitable that somebody will bring up a fact that is new to you, changing your perception of the work.

          Anonymous

that has nothing to do with what i said at all. the point is that if you dont understand you need to think it over yourself and read the vn or you literally didnt get it. Discussion is a multi-actor process, not reading someone elses thoughts and trying to take them as your own. you are being an autistic contrarian, but just look up any higu or umi interview and he says the same thing. if its illogical then so is R07

Not him, but having formulated your own understanding of a work doesn't prevent you from reading about the interpretations of others and thus expanding your own horizon. Surely you're not that arrogant to suggest that it's impossible that someone, somewhere, is capable of insight that went over your head.

It explained R07's intent with the story, which was to solve two problems that don't exist. Those are:

        1) Critique classic detective fiction (ignoring all later developments)
        2) Criticizing the death of the author, believing authorial intent matters above all else (only he gets to decide what truth is allowed).

Although silly, those make a lot more sense than the conventional view of a pro-escapism message being introduced out of nowhere.

why did R07 write such a long VN about a chud coping

Because Ryukishi is a hack. Reading Umineko was a huge mistake and I'm probably going to wash that off by reading better VNs like Subahibi.

        >probably going to wash that off by reading better VNs like Subahibi.
Please do not hype yourself up this much for it. It has one good chapter and a few good scenes outside of it. Subahibi excels at schizokino and expecting anything more than that will cause you to have a bad time, unless you know jack shit about philosophy and are impressed by random quotes and the authour jacking off how well-read he is.

          Anonymous

Couldn't be worse than Umineko. I didn't read Umineko expecting schizo shit, this time it will be different, hopefully.

Stop thinking too hard about it and get to reading then, you little shit. Take note that chapter 1 is nonsensical bullshit until after you finish it. If you think about dropping it there try and make it to chapter 2/3 so you can give it a fair judgement.

        Anonymous

If you thought the endings to Higurashi and Umineko sucked then I wouldn't expect much from the ending of Subahibi. It turns into a generic anime happy ending at complete odds with the rest of the VN.

          Anonymous

Well I assume it would at least make sense unlike what Ryukishi decided to do with Umineko or that new Higurashi anime. I swear to God Ryukishi can't write endings worth shit.

Can't, lost it in early 2021.
                I do remember a few.
Mari and Carmen are separate sisters. Mari is bubbly and cheerful, Carmen is suHispanicious and distrustful.
Momotake has a female alt named Momo. She is very unhappy with their masculine body.
Naomi had a male alt but he was "killed", causing (or through) brain damage. She now lives a half-life, incomplete, and she dresses somewhat masculine in compensation, this is a reference to Ryougi Shiki.

Nobody knows really. Ryukishi claims that 2020's events struck way too close to what he was writing so he held it back but there's probably more to it than that. The project is far from dead though (pic related). Once he finally releases two I'm sure that three and four will come pretty quickly after.

Nobody bought it. R07 wrote a dark mecha story and slapped the WTC label on it to get more sales, which didn't work.

      This isn't true.

Either someone he knew died of the virus or he was being painfully japanese and having too much consideration for everyone else in relation to the pandemic.
The third option is that he needed an excuse to get time to write but I highly doubt it. He has gone on record saying that he is very strict with the deadlines he sets for himself.

The point is that the deadline was cancelled for either the reason he gave publicly or something else that he is keeping hidden.

Umineko falls appart because Rukishi bit more than he could chew. If he made a more straightforward, unpretentious story like what was presented first it could have had a smoother development and a satisfying payoff. Just a based retard having to THINK to save his family from sadistic witches in a surreal meta-game. The moment you're asked to sympathize with Beatrice, it's all downhill from there...

My favorite chapters were 1 and 6, everything else was either dull or actively annoying and bad. Chapter 1 has the best atmosphere and the best pure "mystery" since there's no magic bullshit yet. 6 has easily the best debates, main characters, and my favorite tracks. Nothing else comes close for me other than those two. I don't get the love for Umineko, the majority is just dull.

You can ignore reality, but you can't ignore the consequences of ignoring reality. Take Maria, for instance. Everyone threats her like a larping autistic retard and that severely impacts her options in life. What she chooses to believe in her own mind has no effect in reality. Even R07 acknowledges this when the stakes are incapable of killing for Ange when Ange herself isn't capable of killing. Her delusions don't exist outside her own mind, it's just a coping mechanism.

              Fanfiction.
Yasuda's default configuration is unknown. They could have been a mutilated woman just fine. It really doesn't change the facts.
They are a eunuch with a mass of scar tissue where their genitals should be. You cannot call them "trans" because they don't assert any gender for themselves; they were raised as a girl and thought they were a girl for a time, but the conclusion they actually came to is that they are neither male or female, only "furniture", less than human.

It does. Yes the penis/vag was mutilated but his DNA would still have an X or a Y chromosome which influenced how his body developed. Bone density, muscle density, skeletal development, etc.

It'd also influence how his brain developed. Male and female brains are not the same.

Having been deprived of the gonads in infancy, their body is accordingly too androgynous to identify, even for a trained doctor. Sure, their DNA has chromosomes, but they never got any appropriate dosage of testosterone or estrogen, and so their bone density, muscle density, skeletal development, and brain development are all warped and nonstandard to the point of poor identification.
QED, you cannot actually say Yasuda is a mutilated man or a mutilated woman. Furthermore, it does not matter which one they were, because in both cases they are still not trans.

It does when their ovaries are ripped out by jagged rock.
Remember: Yasuda was so violently gored that it was a miracle they survived at all. It was not a simple snip of the dick. It was not a minor wound. It was a brutal injury that was almost unthinkable to recover from.

It does in a baby and when it's explicitly stated that they became infertile and suffered a wound that was miraculous to survive from. If it was just the vagina that was damaged they wouldn't have been outright infertile. Pretty sure artificial insemination was already a thing in the eighties if not vaginoplasty after all.

Thanks for proving you have no reading comprehension buddy. The point was never about Yasu being female, it was that either male or female, the accident would have left them sexless and incapable of going through puberty in order to develop an actual gendered body.

I'm not saying Yasu was written to be trans. I'm saying that's how it came out. I don't think the author could have predicted the insanity of modern day idpol.

I don't doubt the damage was pretty severe and did result in lessened testosterone production, but he's still a man at the end of the day. Even eunuchs end up with masculine traits.

The only people that assume that are trannies. The only thing that can be reasonably inferred from the VN is that Yasuda was a girl and was either insecure about it due to the accident destroying her genitalia and/or womb or, ,as Lion, because she didn't develop a very feminine body.
Even these occlusions are up to interpretation of course, however there is no real evidence for Yasuda being female besides the gender ambiguity which is explained due to the reasons stated above

                Anonymous

Did you? The only real indicators we have for Yasu's gender is that regardless of how they're raised they're insecure about it and that Nanjo and Genji feared that Kinzo might end up raping Yasu.
The first clue doesn't specify anything and the second makes it very likely that Yasu was a girl considering Kinzo is only ever shown to be attracted to women.

i get the distinct impression that umi was written in reaction to the fact that the major reveal near the end of higu broke mystery genre conventions, and the criticism really needled him. so he made a classic agatha christie setup and let it play out multiple ways. cool. i didnt really care for it but it was fine.

but then after reaching this goal he wanted to really show he could transcend beyond the rules of the whodunnit, to show that the caring about genre rules is a mistake. but he cant, hes not that good of a writer. so the further you go on the more the metaverse becomes shitty shonen action drama stage. the finale asspulls a bunch of rules out of nowhere that have no set up, to reach unearned payoffs.

he seems keenly aware and embarrassed of this so he has to write in his critics as goats trying to destroy his world. "y-you just didnt understand it!" no. i understood it perfectly fine. the more it goes on the less i care about the characters, the setting, the plot or the themes. its a bloated meandering mess that you couldnt finish properly. if higu's sin was breaking whodunnit rules, umi's sin is breaking the contract between the reader and the author.
i wish him luck with ciconia but im not going to read a word of it.

The combination of Hanyuu being an actual supernatural force, breaking Knox's 2nd, and the nature of Hinamizawa Syndrome as a "device X" that could not possibly be predicted, breaking Knox's 4th.

Maybe I'm just not good for detective stories; because I don't mind supernatural explanations so long as they're interesting and consistent.

But the reveal of Hanyuu being a god thing and the Hinamizawa Syndrom being Evil Science Juice was like the absolute worst of both worlds. I still can't believe he managed to fuck it up that hard.

Well, Japan is a very strict collectivist society where you have to just shut up and follow the rules, so it's no wonder some japanese try to escape reality or defy rules as a way to vent their feelings. In this case, the author tried to do just that with the mystery genre, something he was not capable of doing successfully because he doesn't understand why the ''rules'' became ''rules'' and that they were already successfully broken many times by competent authors.

Umineko glorifies escapism and self-delusion, it's basically the Anti-Evangelion, and everyone that likes it are worse for it. Weak willed people that want to hear that ''it's okay to be weak''. Pathetic. Fuck magic, I reject that crutch.

Sorry, but 2D and fiction is many times better than the hell hole that is real life. If you didn't think so either you'd go outside instead of discussing it. Escapism is and always will be better, and that's the message of Umineko. It's just objective truth.

      Anonymous

It really doesn't. But these morons can't talk about anything without filtering it through their caveman 4chanspeak to check for wrongthink and [ENEMY TRIBE]'s ideology.

      Anonymous

Finally a smart post. Why do you think the author went out of his way to make the sex of Yasu ambiguous in the VN? Because it goes with the theme of the catbox. He WANTED you to speculate and debate and create your own headcannon, like in so many aspects of a vague story that is 99% unreliable narration. There is not much to conclude about the story, it's mostly a mirror where people see what they want to see. It would be genius if Ryukishi didn't backtrack and fuck everything up in the last chapters by giving it, unambiguously, a pro-escapism overarching message.

            Anonymous

You haven't? The puzzles itself are pretty short compared to the trials of an AA game, it does use gameplay to move around more though, I would categorize it as a hybrid, half VN, half Adventure game. 999 and AA games also skirt that line, but not as much as Ghost Trick I think.

Rec me some good mystery VNs where you can actually deduce the answers through logic and evidence bros
Doesn't matter if they're linear, just so long as I can make it a game of playing detective myself

Spider whore makes Rika look like a fucking 200 IQ genius with how ridiculously incompetent she made out to be after that reveal

Ghost Trick is a great mistery. I also recommend Return of the Obra Dinn but that's not a VN.

The first four chapters of the VN is the entire anime series. So half of the VN.

              Anonymous

That wasn't me, by the way.
              >Adaptations bad!
You don't understand. In this case that's absolutely true. You cannot adapt something as gargantuan as Umineko into a 24 (26?) episode anime. Not only do you lose multiple red truths and details needed to solve the mystery, but due to the compact nature of the anime the pacing is shoddy, the plot goes everywhere, and you're simply not given enough time to digest anything. Plus, the anime itself just looks like ass. Then there's the matter of narrator shenanigans, but that's more of a meta issue that you wouldn't get if you haven't been exposed to the series. Etcetera etcetera, that's just off the top of my head. Granted, I do think an anime would work, but in Umineko's case its direction and overall 'feel' is subpar at best and a travesty at worst.
If you absolutely can't get into the VN, then read the manga. We do NOT talk about the anime. We never talk about the anime. There's a reason nobody will ever recommend the anime.
The anime does not exist. That's always been the sentiment in the community.

To me the whole chud fanbase thing is really gross and bothers me a lot, it’s obvious to me that Yasu isn’t supposed to be depicted as a “valid” queer but rather a mindfucked piece of shit. Maybe this is just wishful thinking, but I personally never saw the VN as trying to promote the Post-Modernism cope shit, but rather used it as a means to satisfy more casual readers from a much sadder reality as well as exist as cope fuel for Ange, who I feel like non-mystery readers are supposed to be represented by. The 8th chapter really just plays as a veiled goodbye to the wishful thinking of the players who took the time to solve the mystery, and additionally act as a cope that most readers now even consider a happyish ending.
I feel like Ryukishi succeeded in creating a character driven mystery story that shines bright on its own, and I feel like the way it was executed was nothing short of genius.
That said, a lot of the non-game related interactions like the ones with Ange and the battle after chapter 7 and other things like that are really cheesy and take away much of the raw emotion that the games as well as meta-verse commentary/exchanges manages to build.
Ange and everything related to her story was utterly retarded, and took away much from what could’ve been an perfect story.
Those flaws are what are to be expected with anime/manga/VNs/JRPGs, but even still it feels tragic that those Japanese weirdisms had to manifest itself within this as well, especially because I really did enjoy Umineko.

I got really into Higurashi a while back.
Tried going through Umi too, but I lost motivation partway through, and I don't know if I'd read more R07 VNs.

I've heard that and RGD are shorter stories, I'd be willing to try them out at some point.
I'd try Ciconia too if it would actually come out beyond one part. Maybe reading it as things are released is a better experience.

It definitely is. Half the fun of R07 works is speculating with others when a new installment comes out.
