100%, it feels like an actual adventure that you need to plan and pack for. It's also hard as frick and you know everyone who made it the elf magic forest had to go through that shit. I think because of it I have a preference for games that but up difficult barriers to make it to other areas.

same, thats because they dont have level zones like all the fricking other mmos so they can put low level content, mid tier and high level all over the map and even layer them so people of different levels will always meet.

Imagine if osrs did that and to visit catherby all the monsters and enemies around it was lvl 70, you would have no noobs or skill pures levelling there. Its fricking silly that this is the mmo design today. Id get it if its meant to be wilderness or some shit, but it jarring to play a mmo like ff14 and you got zones where the humans btw are equal strength to other humans around the world, but the monsters there because you're in a expansion are higher level. Its fricking silly.

It has to do with the level systems of it and the fact that Runescape is a very free form mmo. There's no main story.

Runescape 3 feels like a Korean MMO from the art style to the monetization. Reminds me of Everquest 2 in how badly it dumped what made the game good.

I played RS3, and theres still not really a main story, or at least no real story for the player. No main quest line.
The players story is purely what they do. Nothing more. Each region has a story to it, and there are quests lines, but that's it.

Basically the biggest problem with MMOs these days, there's no mystery to them anymore. tryhards rush the game and then put all the info is online. If you don't use the info you're at a severe disadvantage.

Hope in the future there is an AI created dynamic MMO that is different on every server and essentially infinite. So you can't just datamine or rush all the content and put it on the wiki. Events and content are unique and then get replaced in a way that makes sense.

Yet. They really wanted to but as per the norm with OSRS there is a very vocal group of spergs that revolted and made them backtrack a little. But also keep in mind the way they want to do it is also 0/10 foresight. Isn't it still a thing for OSRS where the fresh-start worlds will carry over all their items and shit when they are turned into full characters? With increased droprate modifiers on the server too, just not XP boosts? At least RS3s fresh-start is a boost for new players and people who don't want to grind as much. OSRS is literally just foot-in-the-door against the spergery of people who no-life OSRS.

You can't have a game be the exact same and actually survive for 5+ years

They literally recycled biomes from the main continent into a smaller one, it's uninspiring in that aspect. If they were going to do a fresh continent at least make it unique. That's what I liked about the original continent that all parts of it are completely unique.

If this was the point they're failing miserably. Where is Sealing Creation? Where are any of the RS2 questline finishers? Where's Summoning?

          Anonymous

They've added old minigames like Soul Wars back to OSRS, unfortunately there's the problem that if the rewards aren't worth it people just won't play it, which is basically what happened to Soul Wars. They've talked about adding it, but would it actually stay popular is the question. They've also been fleshing out previous questlines like the Morytania questline and Desert ones, just in a way that better fits OSRS. There's also been talk about adding in some 08/09 quests from RS3, such as While Guthix Sleeps, they already did it for Land of the Goblins.

As for a new skill, I wouldn't expect an RS3 skill to ever be added, *maybe* we'll eventually get a new skill, but it's been notoriously difficult for new skills to pass polls.

all polled to be added into the game and because 3/4 people in botscape didn't vote yes they didn't add them. people said summoning would break the game because it would extend trips with extra inventory spots

There was definitely talk about it, but I think the fact that Soul Wars died after a few months made them reconsider adding something like that.

the only reason it died is because it was metagamed to fricking hell. People don't want to play Soul Wars, they want to get the Soul Wars pet (and optionally some other loot too.)

An official server locked to 2007 would not last very long, as evidenced by how the sub numbers started really dropping once the freshness of the release wore off. You have to remember, people liked 2007 runescape not just because of the nature of the game, they also liked it because it was constantly being updated. The 2007 version of runescape also really didn't have that much in the way of pvm content, you really only had a handful of high level bosses with very basic mechanics.

It could’ve lasted if Jagex wanted it too. They kept Classic servers open for years and years before their Chinese masters told them to shutter it. There would have been people perfectly happy to play RS2 just as it was, it’s just that Jagex realized that they could wring more money out of OSRS is they updated and casualized it

          Anonymous

Yeah it could have lasted, but it would be incredibly small population after 2-3 years, when the nostalgia of 2007scape wears off you realize there's really not a massive amount to do especially late game.

            Anonymous

Lasted is a strong fricking word there, it was already down to like 15k players at its low points and that was without time to pull it away. The more the community pulls away, the less the nostalgia for a long gone community holds people in. Having like 200 people on some servers isn't really a win.

To each his own. I would have been perfectly happy with a small population and an unchanged RS2

              Anonymous

I have no doubt some people do, but the reality of it is Jagex is a business and there's just not much incentive to support a game that might only have a few thousand players. I will give you some potential good news though, they were talking recently about alternate servers and game modes like leagues and if I recall one idea was something along the lines of classic OSRS. Probably unlikely for it to happen, but who knows.

                Anonymous

That would be nice, though if that happened I would almost want them to drop the OSRS name and just call it RS2 Classic or something. The "Oldschool" label is pretty much a misnomer by this point

                Anonymous

What even determines whether an update is truly RS2 or not? I've always felt like the majority of the updates still retain what made RS2 iconic while adding more depth and enjoyable content to the game.

                Anonymous

No new update is RS2, except content that was actually added to the game pre-HD. RS2 was what it was because of the Jagex that existed at the time. That Jagex is gone. While I have some respect for the OSRS team, they are not and never will be the same. Their and the playerbase's ideas of what makes a good game is very alien to how it was fifteen years ago.

I don't have any problem with people who like new content if that's what they like, but it's not "keeping the old Runescape spirit" and it never will be

There's a ridiculous amount of content, but I guess the people who play as a full time job burn through it that quickly.

Lasted is a strong fricking word there, it was already down to like 15k players at its low points and that was without time to pull it away. The more the community pulls away, the less the nostalgia for a long gone community holds people in. Having like 200 people on some servers isn't really a win.

They should have expanded south for more desert content instead of that shitty island.

It's bullshit and kind of terrifying when you first do it, but it goes to show how fricking routine quests are for other RPGs much less other MMOs when cookie clicker quests are as memorable as they are.

In no other quest can you be gangraped by gorillas and monkey ninjas/zombies while shitting yourself over tiny ass spiders.

Probably the worst case of a classic runescape challenge getting ruined by power creep and quality of life. All the tension in that quest revolved around how remote it was, how well equipped you had to be to survive there, and how easily you could actually lose progress if you fricked up and lost your transformations or amulet. Made the stakes really high and made you dread dying. Now who gives a shit the death timer on your items is like 5 hours long now you aren't losing anything and if you get scared just puss out and take any of the million of free teleports out of there.

I still play RS3 to this day. It's solid if you ignore the MTX or just play an Ironmeme. I wish our raids were more varied and unique systems like OSRS though.

      >I wish our raids were more varied
Doesn't OSRS still only have like three raids? They keep asking for new stuff and something along the lines of dungeneering to keep things fresh.

They literally keep on adding stuff from RS3 into OSRS even if it doesn't make sense lore wise like them adding in the fricking corp beast even though summoning and the quest its involved with isn't in OSRS.

Yes but CoX, ToB and ToA are all varied. RS3 has Liberartion of Mazcab which isn't nor ever will be finished. Elite Dungeons are all the same and just "go fast." I like the difficulty scaling and reward systems in OS raids.

I want to come back to OSRS but I'm sick of PVM so I'm thinking of making a skiller and completely ignoring the entire combat aspect of this game as much as possible

However I'm kind of dreading those combat situations where it is indeed possible to complete a quest without gaining experience by using rings of recoils to kill monsters to death. I forgot how many quests involving combat skillers can actually do that way.

How long until Gankerscape gets it

This game was such a big part of my life, and I come back to it every now and then and then play it for hours. I remember coming back from school, starting my dad's pc and play runescape, I'd say I was sorta addicted, it was almost like a second life to me, and some classmates of mine played it too. I was in a clan too and have fond memories of it, until the clan leader had to quit playing because his parents said he was too addicted, then the clan just fell apart and I didn't really have fun playing anymore. Sometimes I would come back and play for a bit, but as time went by the game became shittier with all sorts of new bullshit being added, like the spinning wheel, eoc and whatever.
Too bad my original account got banned for god knows whatever reason, but I've always had a second account to so I play on that now, mainly osrs because rs3 is just fricking weird, a watered down game that tries too much to be other mmos.

Because in 2015 OSRS was still not too different from vanilla RS2, at least a lot of the new content you could ignore. But the amount of new stuff increased, and there were a lot more "quality of life improvements" that are unavoidable

not him - the overall feel of the game is the same but the community that made it what it was is gone. replaced with efficiency wiki players of all modern mmos. its no longer a medieval themed chat room

They nerfed Black D'hide after 16 years. I was almost ready to craft my own set on my ironman then dropped the game. I haven't been back since. And that ironman was to cope with how shit everything else had gotten, then they came for me too. I wish they'd release a RS2007 vanillascape but Gankereddit gets it in a tizzy at the thought of it.

99 was not originally meant to be an actual goal, it was just an arbitrary number that Paul and Andrew picked out of thin air. That’s why (besides smithing) there was very little content tied to very high levels in RS2. The highest quest requirements were in the low 70s
