      why?

The opposite more like. 1440p with good upscaling/reconstruction is good enough for gaming. 4K is absolutely worth it for movies for the clarity.

what isn't a meme, is OLED monitors, if your display is still using shitty outdated tech you have bigger things to think about.

I can never get a perfectly clear answer on this so maybe it's so moronic it goes without even needing to be asked, but:
I have a 144Hz monitor; if I run it at 60Hz via the nvidia control panel, is it then the same as a native 60Hz monitor?
asking because I heard if you want to lower the refresh rate it's sometimes better to use a rate that divides evenly into 144, such as 72, but I'm unsure if that's used for different scenarios

      >if I run it at 60Hz via the nvidia control panel, is it then the same as a native 60Hz monitor?
Yes. One of the single dumbest things I've ever done was assume that monitor refresh rates were built into the hardware and didn't require actually going into the settings to change it. I played for like 2+ years at 60hz on a 120 monitor...

Yes it will operate like a native 60Hz monitor. Why would you want to lower the refresh rate though?

        Anonymous

in-case I ever need to lower it if I'm struggling to maintain 144Hz or whatever. I'd rather just have a consistent locked 60, 72 or whatever else
although having said that, I'm not sure if just leaving it at 144Hz anyway and letting it fluctuate is best

Hz is how often your monitor refreshes per second. FPS is how many pictures your computer can produce per second. You can just let your monitor at 144Hz, lowering the refresh wont help even if your computer/game just runs at 60fps. In most cases displays operate the best at their highest refresh rates.

If your monitor offers freesync(amd cards) or gsync/gsync compatibility(nvidia cards) i would recommend reading up on using that - in this case the monitor will actually try to sync its refresh rate (Hz) with the fps the game runs at but its a very pleasent and universal solution for all video games bar esports/sweaty fps.

          Then limit the frame-rate, brainlet.

You will never struggle to maintain 144Hz your monitor will always refresh at the rate you set it to.

You might(will) struggle to maintain 144fps and if the fluctuating framerate bothers you, it can be daunting if a game has high dips from 120 to 60 fps or so, limit the games framerate/fps. Some games have options for that, console commands, nvidia control panel has a setting which you can set per game or theres external software for it (rivatuner).

So you set your desired framerate to 60 or whatever for the game but you DO NOT need to also lower your monitors refresh rate(Hz).

            >So you set your desired framerate to 60 or whatever for the game but you DO NOT need to also lower your monitors refresh rate(Hz).
yeah that's what I figured. I kept on hearing that you had to lower the game's framerate to one that neatly divided into your monitor's refresh rate, that's all, but it sounds like you guys are saying it's nonsense

just get a gsync or adaptive sync or whatever monitor and don't bother with just jerry rig solutions

It's a marking scheme so they don't need to improve actual graphics quality, if you can convince people that better visuals = higher "k" resolution and always higher framerate you don't need to make the next games look better, you just need to wait for Nvidia to do the work for them and run the same shitty old engine at 8k 300fps and pretend that's the future

This is an intentional misleading pic. Resolutions aren't like focal lengths, which is how it's being portrayed. It'll be like the bottom where you still se everything.

I'm going to buy a 4k 120hz QDLED once I build a new computer with the new generation coming, but I'm buying a 4k one for productivity reasons not for gaming. 4k is dumb for gaming.

You need more resolution as games get more detailed

It's alright. I'm more of a refreshrate / framerate kind of guy. The 360hz monitors are insanely nice to use. Though the XG2431 with 120hz BFI mode is 99% CRT levels of motion clarity and I prefer that generally over 240hz on that monitor or my other 360hz monitor.

    Ehhh, yeah, maybe.
4k is great for work-type stuff and anything with a blu-ray player, though.
Gaming, I don't know, I'd rather have a higher refresh rate than 4k. I think too many normalgays are enamored with higher resolutions even though they'd be fine with halfway-decent upscaling instead (and that's basically what they get when they're advertised "4k games" anyway, heh.)
