God of War

Some anon posted GoW screenshots in the 'giant stuff in retro games' thread we had a couple days ago and it got me interested in this game. I'm about to play it for the first time but it has difficulty options, should I go for normal or hard? I googled it and apparently this game is very difficult

By the way this is the screenshot that sold me on this game. I was surprised that a non-Japanese game looked like this

God of War II is even better than 1 in this manner. 3 even more so: has you crawling around the Titan Kronos in real time as it zooms in and out.

Yes, the games are hard. However they're only unbearably hard on the difficulty you unlock by beating the game. So if you pick the hardest difficulty available, that's actually only the second hardest one and should be beatable.

        >the games are hard
I beat them easily when I was a kid. You pretty much only have to find the best combo and spam it.

I said they are only hard on the hardest difficulty. Do you have any reading comprehension? Spamming one or two combos doesn't work then.

No, you just need to learn some more grammar.

        >they're only unbearably hard on the difficulty you unlock by beating the game

It took me an unfathomable amount of tries to beat Theseus on Titan mode. And the fight itself isn't even that hard, it's the fact that the icicles he spams while on the roof become one-hit kills. You have zero margin for error

1 wasn't super brutal on max difficulty...until you get to the clones. Everything from that point forward is bullshit. The Ares fight seems just plain unfair in places. I beat 1 and 2 on max difficulty and decided 3 could frick right off, I didn't want to see what sort of bullshit factory Zeus became

You either need to strategize more on max difficulty or you just farm red orbs and spam magic. In GoW1 with Rage active you have infinite mana and it's insane, makes even the clones somewhat of a joke. 3 is probably the easiest of the bunch. Even Zeus can just be air grab looped in that game.

it's kind of bland in terms of gameplay. but there is a cool vision behind the visual design of the characters and the setting. just mash square square circle and roll back and repeat. it's a fun one to run through once

Yes I chose to play it because of the visual design, I'm not a big fan of this type of gameplay in general but considering the fact that it's not even a Japanese hack n slash game so it's pretty obvious it won't be anything special. But I'm wondering if I can enhance my experience by playing on hard or if the game is already challenging on normal

I wouldn't say "very difficult" but it can be fairly hard at times. Once you figure out quick kills on mooks it's all about the boss fights. Play it on Hard.

I'd say Hard is good if you're familiar with games like this and Devil May Cry. But there are a few difficulty spikes.

I've beaten first four DMC games on normal difficulty but it was ages ago. It's almost finished downloading and you know what, I think I'll play it on normal

Not sure right now if the hardest difficulty option has to be unlocked first but that one gets really tough towardst the end. Two fights in particular might cost you hours each to clear. So yeah, don't do that on your first run through. It might end up taking all your enjoyment out of the experience.

I picked Hard when I played for the first time and got my shit kicked in. Went back to Normal, played for a while and got the hang of combat. Then I restarted on Hard and went on to finish it

I beat all the dmc games on hard without much trouble and I had some parts where I struggled a bit in GoW on hard. Nothing where I was stuck for hours and almost quit but it can be pretty punishing at times. Especially those Cerberus enemies that spawn more if you don't kill them fast enough and that part with the final boss where you have to fight a shit load of enemies off without letting them attack someone else.
If you do play on hard make sure you search good for hidden chests for rorbs and use the lightning attack to string combos because you probably won't get enough for all the upgrades

So I played this game on normal for almost 5 hours and I have to say that it's exactly how I expected it to be. Top notch art style, reminds me of Ico and Sands of Time, but the gameplay is literally 2/10, I'm not even joking, it manages to be both boring and frustrating at times. I bought the PS3 collection, I'll play 1 til the end I guess but I'm afraid that I don't even want to try 2

I don't think you've actually played a 2/10 game. There is no issue with controlling the character, and there is only one janky section with the spike roller segment (but that's due to the hit detection on the walls so sometimes you go out of bounds). Try playing a game with sluggish controls and mystifying hit detection in which you have no clue how to hit the boss nor know how the boss isn't hitting you.

2/10? god of war is at worst a 6/10

I know it's objectively a 6 but my fricking god this game can be annoying at times, I'm glad I chose normal instead of hard. Don't know, maybe it's just not my cup of tea.
        >I don't think you've actually played a 2/10 game
I think I played worse. I fully beat Sonic and the Secret Rings and also played quite a lot of Atlantis no Nazo. God of War at least functions, it's just that I'm not a fan

Start on Normal. On that difficulty you won't have many problems if you're competent enough. If you only want to play for the visuals then you can stop there, otherwise if you like the gameplay then play Hard and finally Very Hard, which is where the real game starts. You can apply this also to GoWII (and speaking of visuals this one is even better, with tons of varies enviroments while the first one can be kinda samey).
You should replay it though because the combat is great, but it has a different focus compared to DMC. Here your main assets are your spells (insanely powerful but can only be recharged with chests and when you execute certain enemies) and the grabs. These in particular offer good damage, which is the same on all difficulties, some multi grab options, some instakill, iframes and are backed up by a collision system. Basically throwing enemies into one another does damage, but this scales with difficulty, and on Very Hard does an absurd amount (for reference, the ender of the square square triangle combo does 3 damage on VH, full collisions do 50).
Another cool element of this game are ringouts. Some enemies are kinda spongey but you can instakill lots of them simply by making them fall off stage. The Orion's Harpoon (ground to air grab) is great for this because it can be redirected.

I beat it. I'm glad that there are people who like it but honestly I'm dissapointed. It has impressive graphics and setpieces for a PS2 game though, maybe that's why it's considered one of the greatest titles for the system. I don't know, should I try 2 now?

definitely. 2 is more a story of revenge but its considered the better game. i always liked 1 better though, felt like you go on this epic journey. 2 is also considered the swan song for the ps2, being one of the last great games to come out for it.

The first game is very rough around the edges. There's a lot of bullshit platforming involved and consecutive puzzles that go on for too long. The devs had a better grip on balancing things from GOW2-onwards, at least until Ascension happened.
