Godot developers launch new company to help Godot grow in the industry

https://w4games.com/2022/08/09/hello-world-w4-games/

>Hello everyone! We are pleased to announce the formation of W4 Games, a new company created by Godot Engine veterans Juan Linietsky, Rémi Verschelde and Fabio Alessandrelli, and veteran entrepreneur Nicola Farronato.

>W4 Games was formed to strengthen the Godot ecosystem by providing both enterprise and independent developers with a complementary suite of commercial products and services to successfully develop and publish video games to all existing platforms in the market. Further announcements about these products and services will be made over the coming weeks and months as they become available.

>As part of our development philosophy we want to give back to Godot wherever possible. Throughout the development of our products we will be open sourcing as much as we can, including additions to Godot that strengthen the engine. Stay tuned for relevant announcements on this topic in the coming days!

>For now, please check out our home page for basic information about the company and check out our FAQ if you have any further questions.

>Importantly, we strongly believe in Godot as a totally free and open source project, and we will not compromise those beliefs. W4 Games is here to provide products and services that cannot be provided by a free and open source project, but are necessary for corporate users as well as self-publishing individuals to fully enjoy Godot.

>We are excited to be here and to strengthen the Godot ecosystem by ensuring that larger studios and companies can acquire the support they need to use Godot. We hope you share in our excitement.

Wat? The reason this exists is because it is literally impossible to provide fully open source engines or libraries for consoles due to NDAs. If anything the console manufacturers should stop living in the past and provide SDKs without a pile of legal documents.

they made those installers that had the "check here to install blah blah blah browser addon" that would trick boomers into installing random shit.
anyone could put whatever they want into an installer, so some people used this to put fake web browser installations, with one of those "check here" things that would then install malware.
the company themselves never did anything as far as releasing malware. saying they're a malware company is like saying gun manufacturers are responsible for gun injuries.

Don't forget that earlier this year Unity announced they were developing their first ever game. It was supposed to be to Unity what Fortnite is to Unreal, a practical real-world use of the engine that they could use as a first-hand reference for better improving and fine-tuning their engine according to real-world needs.

But then last month they cancelled it and decided to use that leftover money to merge with a malware company.

Unity has definitely seen better days than this.

Unity isn't an option for anybody

        Anonymous

anything you could do with Unity in 2018 or 2019 you can still do right now. it's more "compact" than Unreal, you have more realistic odds of finishing a project as a solo developer or small team in Unity. this is how things were years ago and nothing has changed. Unreal hasn't gotten any better at the things Unreal has always sucked at. it still performs terribly, takes forever to compile, is optimized for a large team work flow etc. and godot still has bad physics, bad lighting and shadows, you name it and it's lacking obvious features like linerenderers still. apparently the godot devs are working on several solutions for lighting and finishing none of them. sound familiar? that's what sucks about Unity! so Godot is no better and in fact it's much worse because it has far fewer usable features. the fact that Unity is finished improving and Godot is slowly improving doesn't change anything because the rate of improvement on Godot is an order of magnitude away from what it needs to be. Godot isn't catching up at this rate. and I wish it was and I could ditch Unity already.

Even if someone decides to purchase W4 a few years in the future, Godot source code will be available, and multiple dev will just fork the engine, I suspect some devs are already trying to fork Godot into something else, Godot has the best cross-plataform GUI toolset, no other api that I've used was straight forward as Godot.

but that was my idea, i said Godot was never going to last with the shitty patreon funds and the devs were vulnerable of losing money any time for any reason. They quickly needed a better source of funds and game publishing will try and fix that but lets be honest they have zero experience publishing or marketing games and have ZERO connections to other companies.

Even Nobeta's publisher in Taiwan could pull strings all around japan because of connections with japanese companies.

My friend and I began learning game dev in Unity and spent a few months casually learning some of the systems. Would it be a waste to move over to another game engine if we're looking to just make a top down action RPG?

I've heard good things about Gamemaker and Godot for this, but it'd suck to waste all that time we spent learning Unity.

      Anonymous

Most of the things you learned on Unity are kinda the same in other engines, the syntax may change or you need to do the same thing a bit differently but at least you have a north because you know unity.

That's re-assuring. Our huge issue in Unity was trying to figure out the animator. We're making a sprite based action RPG and were having major issues with figuring out hitboxes/animation cancelling.

They will change it to UE6 when it releases.

Didn't they switch to Lumberyard (which is now O3DE)?

They started out by making the totally sane and reasonable choice of Cryengine - an engine intended for graphically intensive (by 2010 standards) level based FPS games with everything running entirely on the user's PC - for their open universe MMO spaceship simulator.
When it turned out to be an awful choice, they started spending loads of money hacking the fricking thing apart to make it work as an MMO. They failed. They then switched to Lumberyard, which was Cryengine except Amazon had succeeded in hacking it apart and adding network integration to everything, because it's Amazon and they want all data on their cloud or at least accessible by it because analysis of you and your habits is the whole business model.
So now Star Citizen is on this fricked up Amazon engine, I have no idea what work is being done by your computer and what's being offloaded to a server farm somewhere, and if you don't have fantastic internet you'll fall through the floor because not only the world graphics but the world's fricking collision map is streamed to you from the server in real time at all times. Star Citizen is fricked beyond my ability to describe.

Godot will most likely be a top contender in a couple years but it will go through a lot of growing pains until then. If you have a project now or are planning to release something in the next four years no point in moving development over since any major updates they will do has a risk of breaking shit in your game so you won't really benefit off of any improvements unless you settle on a stable release and commit to that until the project is finished.

you are sadly correct. But Unity future looks grim so if you are starting maybe use Unity to learn the basic and jump to Unreal or if your want 2d learn Godot, you can go to Unreal directly but can be overwhelming even more if you know shit about programming( BP still needs you to know the basics).

Jumping to Unreal as a beginner because of some clickbait headlines is an aggressive overreaction honestly. What makes Unity noob friendly is the years of documentation and ready to buy assets which makes it a lot easier to complete a project that Unreal doesn't have. AAA publishers like blizzard and mihoyo rely on Unity for several of their games, so it's not going anywhere anytime soon. For however many small quirks the engine has that you may need to work around there are tons of resources that will let you streamline a shit ton work and save literal months of time on getting an actual, working, functioning game out and published to as many platforms as you are able to.

They won't touch the engine and make it worse . Literally all of their money comes from devs making games and giving them a cut for using it. The absolute worst case scenario is that Unity ends up like Gamemaker where meaningful updates come out too slow and it slowly gets outclassed by other engines but that takes years.

Why start from anything but Unreal? Stop using easier engined as a crutch and start learning the real deal. The producitivity of a Unreal workflow is insane, is not just about higher performance

You literally have no clue what you're talking about.
Most of the money comes from ads in the game.

Godot as it is now is more usable than Unity. The last time I used it it had some weird, dumb choices like intentionally removing the option to use a traditional 6 image skybox because that's just not how it's done any more, learn the much more complicated way instead, you know, for your game that's a low poly indie game made by one amateur dev.

Is there any point to using a skybox when today's game engines have realtime sky and cloud simulation?

          Anonymous

If you're a talentless hack then no you can keep using maximum graphix.
If you want to do anything else then muh realism, then yes

          Anonymous

Wouldn't a skybox way less taxing to GPU/CPU by an order of magnitude? People don't stare the sky enough for the graphical improvement of the simulation to matter.

then you haven't looked at any performance metrics and probably run your shit at 60 fps VSync'd. of course adding an extra simulation impacts performance.

    about time really
they've always struggled to get enough donations to actually sustain development, and offering commercial support is a good way of alleviating that

i hope this will also solve the console export issues
they just need to work with nintendo, sony and microsoft to write export templates
    lock them behind an nda
give them out to every verified developer for free
this is already how it works for unity with some platforms
the only question is really who should fund or maintain them
with a commercial entity connected to godot that's a lot easier to work out

This is done so that they can provide export templates for consoles like other engines do. Godot being FOSS meant that the legal entity to make the necessary deals with console manufacturers didn't exists prior to that. It was just about the last hurdle in the way of Godot not getting mass adoption.

Unity. learn how to asset swap, you'll save a lot of time by either changing the colors/textures of things, or going a step further and slightly editing them in blender
there's more resources for learning it, you can probably find solutions to whatever problems you get.
you also won't be labelled an ally of the trans community.
if you want to get rid of the "made with unity" splash screen, save up some money and pay for 1 month of premium unity. and then export/build your project. its 40 dollars, and you can't do it after a certain point (i think if you make 200k you're forced to subscribe to plus or pro full time if you want to continue using the engine)

The creators of Godot are creating a new company to help developers get their games published on platforms that Godot by default can't export to because of legal reasons like Xbox and PlayStation.
