Speaking of BG3, I was completely fricking shocked at the save file sizes. There is ZERO excuse for a save file to be that fricking large. I build game/software engines all the time and I can't even fricking conceptualize what the frick they're putting in there considering how fricking basic the game is.

Setting game flags IS fricking basic ass shit. It's a fricking HASHMAP. You can even save system flags as a fricking text file if you want to be lazy. It's like save files 101 shit. The game has pre-made maps, dialogue, and turn based combat. Like holy frick, how do you make a 200 MB save file out of that?

One of the engines I've worked on could save entire fricking worlds, every entity, their trained AI, AND screenshots of the world for preview into 2 MB files. They HAVE to be doing something really fricking dumb to have pulled off a save file being that goddamn large.

That's what I was thinking when I got the email, turns out it was pathfinder kingmaker that was over limit for me, I wasn't even that far in but the multiple save files managed to add up, still don't know how each individual file was as large as it was though, I had less saves for wrath of the rightous to begin with but those seem to be smaller as well so whatever kingmakers optimisation frickup was they fixed it.

Granted I ever got as far into wrath as I did kingmaker I think so that might explain the smaller files

They do make it easy to clean up though there's just a button that deletes the oldest saves until you are bellow limit

Built a 2700 SPM base on a map with minimum ore patch frequency and reduced richness (50% IIRC), then I started clearing land to expand to 5400 SPM and beyond. I've probably been playing this map for over a year.

the /egg/men say nuclear bad for UPS, but at the scale you're building the 50 reactors it would take to power the base seems like a drop in the bucket, no?

              Anonymous

              >any reason why you have half solar and half nuclear?
I wanted to just make solar but it requires an insane number of items (panels & accumulators) and it just takes a fricking huge amount of time to set up when the power consumption is in the order of tens of GW. I had nuclear as a "starter" power source since my initial base (before the megabase was up) wouldn't have been able to keep up with solar production. I then tried to transition all power to solar but setting that shit up was so slow and needed so much babysitting from me it just wasn't keeping up with the megabase that was being built so I just slapped down more nuclear since that doesn't need 20h or some shit in order to work. I still technically plan to move to full solar "later" but that's going to be after the 5400SPM expansion, if I even get that far on this map.

As for the solar that is there, I just filled in the empty tiles with solar because I figured I might as well. I built the grid before finishing the whole megabase and didn't exactly know how much space I needed, so there's was a bunch of extra room.

              >the /egg/men say nuclear bad for UPS, but at the scale you're building the 50 reactors it would take to power the base seems like a drop in the bucket, no?
Nah, it actually gets pretty bad when you need tens of GW of power like you do in a megabase. Nuclear on that scale has many thousands of active entities (heat exchangers & turbines) and that just takes a toll on your performance, thousands of extra entities being simulated just aren't going to come for free even in a game that's as optimized as Factorio. Solar in the mean-time actually is pretty much free since the game doesn't simulate every entity, they're just taken as a single big aggregate basically. It's a player convenience (nuclear) vs. game performance (solar) thing.

If you want cloud sync, set up Rclone on your device with your cloud provider of choice (Google has 15 gigs for free) and write a simple bash script that syncs the game saves with the drive.

I don't get how Steam calculates available space

        Anonymous

It may be stat driven. They see every player's save and they cap it based on the largest save files people have. So Tetris Effect probably barely needs to save anything and only has one slot, cap it to largest save file + percentage. Hat in time has multiple slots, and enough people with modded game save files (mods can really cause save files to balloon) are probably what are causing the cap to get increased to crazy sizes.

        Anonymous

The developer determines how big the cloud save cap is. The Hat devs are dumb and left it at a default 100,000,000,000 bytes. Seems like the current max is ~10 GB.

Is there something I am missing that makes that number less arbitrary

1,000,000,000 bytes is 953.67 MB because of 1024s.
