Golden Sun

These games are fricking masterpieces.

The music and puzzles are top tier and the graphics are impressive for an gba title.

Then there is stuff like collecting and summoning jinns or using techniques in the normal world to access secret areas or experimenting with the class system.

This game was absurdly ambitious for the platform it was on.

i agree with everything except twewy. the gameplay on the DS version is phenomenal and yet to be replicated by anything else (and probably won't be, RIP handhelds)

the hype surrounding symphonia hurt my experience with it because i was coming in expecting to be mind blown but it was just...good with a lot of annoying puzzles that suck dick. the story also overstayed its welcome by the end when they started retreading the same shit again with the illusions at the end

Honestly, that sounds like a you problem. I played the game long after I was divorced from the hype and came out pleasantly surprised and feeling like it genuinely holds up. This is after playing Abyss, Vesperia, Graces, and Xillia as well.

I love the golden sun series, but I will forever hate Nintendo and Camelot for making a game 3 that's once again a half part of a complete game, and then never release the second half, game 4

      Anonymous

Anon, there is no 3rd game. You must be confused. The series consists of 2 games which was planned as 1 game but had to be divided due to memory reasons.

My biggest gripe with Dark Dawn were the points of no return that weren't telegraphed at all. 8 party members in a single game was pretty overkill too since only about half of them were memorable.

Only half of them were memorable because their character arcs were in the second game.

Golden Sun was my first jrpg.
Imagine how let down I felt by 99
% of other jrpgs ON CONSOLES lmao.
Very few jrpgs satisfied me after Golden Sun , like Final Fantasy X and honestly thats It!
I played some decent jrpgs years later that compares to Golden Sun(imo) such as Valkirye Profile or Shining the Holy Ark.
Good jrpgs that I played but didnt quite cut It are FF IV-V(not into VI)
    DQ 1-2-3
Star Ocean, and some others I cant remember right now.(FF VII is decent but so unpolished compared To Golden Sun on literally EVERYTHING)

Golden Sun set the highest standards for me, those 2 GBA games are the best of what the JRPG genre has to offer.

Seriously though, Golden Sun has some of the best villages in the RPG genre. They just feel so alive. You can mindread every NPC and every one has their own little problems and world views. No other game ever recreated that feeling. FF6s villages all feel static and samey. Villages and npcs is what Golden Sun absolutely gets right. What's not to love about this series?

This was it. Before, RPGs were either pokemon or ugly black and white first person view dungeon crawlers. Golden Sun was practically the Final Fantasy 7 of handheld games. Golden Sun got me through some long car rides as a young teen. I probably wouldn't have bothered it was on a console.

I've been replaying the first recently, the last time being like 15 years ago, and it's better than I was expecting. Of course I remember really liking it back then, but I took the after the fact criticism of these being overly wording too seriously. It definitely has superfluous dialogue, but it's not nearly as bad as I lead myself to believe.
Does the game ever explain rainbow kills? I noticed it's not in the manual, and I don't think I ever had a suspicion of how weaknesses even worked or were conveyed to you. I happened to notice the punctuation and battle messages and begrudgingly looked it up when the manual didn't tell me anything.

      >rainbow kills
I don't think they're ever explained, but iirc it increases the chance rare drops when you kill an enemy with a djinn they're weak to.

I just looked up the actual mechanics behind it, and holy shit is it moronicly convoluted. Not only do you have to kill them with a djinn elemental weakness, but there's also some extra RNG nonsense on top of dealing with elemental stats of yourself and your enemy. I don't think there's a single NPC that even hints at such a mechanic.

I’m also pretty sure it gives you more EXP, from some testing. It seems like 1.5x or something.
It’s totally unnecessary since the game is so easy, but it’s giving me something extra to do in battles.

The one thing that made me love the games is how the magic is actually used outside of battle. I have yet to see another game do it so seamlessly. If you do get something in modern games the "puzzle" is braindead easy. I still remember trying to figure out what to do with the plants and the joy I had at realizing that changing classes with djinn actually gave you new toys. Its one of the reasons I grew jaded with the video game industry and mostly stick to indie games now.

      Anonymous

The Djinn system was also pretty cool and complex. Do you equip them for stat boosts or keep them on standby to use them against monsters? Or do you fight without them altogether to make the game more challening? The only thing I dislike is how there is only 3 types of them. They all look the same.

I’m not aware of what’s most “efficient,” but doing both is a what’s most fun and involving. You use them for their buff or attack, which banks them for summons.

They were excellent for their time when released. In the modern day though I cannot in good faith recommend them to people unless they need a huge time waster and are big fans of anime. The best thing is the Job mechanic with djinni and the overworld puzzles but you don't get most of the djinni until the last quarter of the game. All the stuff you can miss is also kind of shitty especially when you think about how the Link bonuses work between the titles.

I genuinely think Camelot should make more sport RPG games. Let camelot do a switch mario basketball, mario NFL, make them like the old arcade style NBA street and NFL street games with an arcade mode story mode and multiplayer and it would be fricking great.
