Its almost like the real problem is the execution and not the idea. Why did people complain about Drizzt clones? Because every idiot kid wanted to play one, and they didn't do anything good with them. Same for other characters taken from, or inspired by, other media.

He was cool in the first few books. Then he got all Wolverine popular.

Wasn't what's-his-frick the barbarian supposed to be the main character at first? Then Salvatore got all weirdly attached to Drizzt and extremely hostile to Eilistraee.

            >Wasn't what's-his-frick the barbarian supposed to be the main character at first?
Drizzt has a lot in common with the self-inserts that Salvatore uses as the main character in his other series. I am guessing Drizzt was always the author's pet, but when fans responded well to him he got more and more of the spotlight

            >Then Salvatore got all weirdly attached to Drizzt and extremely hostile to Eilistraee
Anyone got the quote on this? I have heard it a lot second hand but never seen it. To be fair, it sounds like Eili was added specifically to let people play good drow in response to the popularity of Drizzt's character, which Salvatore felt underminded Drizzt's special snowflakeness. In the more recent Drizzt story arcs, good and neutral drow are more common and Eili's followers play a bigger role

No quote but I do have a rough timeline.

              >1985 - Unearth Arcana releases with rules for Drow PCs. Race has no penalty two weapon fighting. All PC Drow are "outcast" Drow.
              >1988 - Crystal Shard released
              >1989 - Streams of Silver released. 2e D&D releases same year
              >1990 - The Halfling's Gem releases followed by Homeland and Exile
              >1991 - Sojourn releases in May. Drow of the Underdark releases with Eilistraee in July

From the looks of it Drow had steadily gained traction as a PC race over the course of 6~7 years after UA released and both Drizzt and Eilistraee were responses rather than causes. I'm betting Salvatore dislike of Eilistraee was more due to people constantly asking him why Drizzt wasn't an Elistraee follower after DotU released.

I don't think it was a dislike as much as it was Drizz't being suspicious of Drow in general and especially suddenly friendly surface drow. The fact the only time I recall it coming up was in Blades of the Hunter where he's talking to two or three Drow that are pretending to be Eilistraee followers but he's not quite buying it.

                >Drow had steadily gained traction as a PC race
Unearthed Arcana may have been the inspiration for Drizzt, but I am guessing the popularity of drow PCs exploded after Crystal Shard

Drizzt briefly mentions witnessing the rise and fall of the church of Eilistraee during the intro chapter of Orc King (which takes place in 4e, while the rest of the book is 3e)

In the latest book arc (which takes place in 5e), the Eilistraee's followers play a key role, but Drizzt never directly encounters them

            >Then Salvatore got all weirdly attached to Drizzt
The story I heard was his editor told him to make Drizzt the main character because he was more interesting
            >and extremely hostile to Eilistraee.
Based. It's the only natural reaction to the hypocrisy of Eilistraee if you're not a commie glowie gooner with a troony fetish like Greenwood.

This character inspired an NPC for my Exalted campaign

      Because you're wrong
      >good-aligned tiefling? More like demon-blooded mortal.
      >bard? Nah, senpai. That's a Zenith-Caste Solar Exalt
      >his demon familiar is also his artifact weapon
      >Has his own shit going on, but is utterly-devoted to fulfilling the campaign premise
The 10/10 makes a lot more sense now.

I'd have said demon-born Fire Aspect Dragonblood, though I can see why you'd lean Zenith. The main difference is that Zenith performance attacks are limited to only working on creatures of darkness, while Dragonblooded ones (if less impressive) can work on anything.

      >chaotic character who always follows his own agenda, even at the expense of the party
      >he's still enjoyable
      Urobuchi-sama... I kneel.

Try putting yourself in the party's shoes, though. From the audience perspective, he can be fun, but he must absolutely suck to be working alongside when you're the butt of his jokes.

Our Exalted game actually has two very Vapeduck-y characters (one a Lunar NPC, the other a Siddie) and yes, both of them are at the top of a lot of people's shitlists, PC and NPC alike.
