It was refreshing. It's a Kojima game where somebody wasn't constantly whining about what he can or can't do. And so he made a game where the focus is in the navigation and not the goal.

It's peak Kojima but I'm biased as frick since that man basically taught me English through MGS

  8. 10 months ago

It's a postapoc mailman sim. I like it. If you like Kojima's brand of autism and enjoy exploring places you'll probably dig it. The combat is kind of bare bones but it's also not the core mechanic of the game.

Biggest gripe is that there's an in-game music player but you can't use it when you're out walking around. Boggles my mind. Also I bought a Bridges cap to wear IRL but it was too small for my gigabrain and that made me kinda sad.

        Anonymous

It's all above ground, IIRC. One of the main conceits of the game is that the rain makes things age very quickly, so stuff that's outdoors needs to be made of pretty specific materials or else it crumbles to dust over time. Thus the need for porters like the MC, who work to get stuff from A to B in areas where there isn't any infrastructure set up.

      What the frick, really? Why...

I downloaded the game and was planning to play it when my huge ass 4K tv arrives next week, one of the biggest things i was hyped about was hiking across alien planet Iceland with kojimbos kino Indie music playlist in the background.

Because the moments when the songs play are very special. Music player would ruin it and frick any moron who wants it in the game. You don't get what the game is about.

I'm the first guy and I get what you're talking about, but I really would have liked having the music player be accessible if you're on the Chiral Network. It would have been nice mood music for when you're bouncing around doing the optional deliveries.

      Anonymous

If you liked MGSV (and hopefully any other MGS or Kojima games?) DEFINITELY play Death Stranding Director's Cut.

Its not MGS, but its a whole separate kind of Kojima weirdness (TM) mixed with "walking sim where walking is actually one of many traversal mechanics that are very in depths" apocalypse delivery postman collaborative asynchronous fun. Quite comfy, well made too. Also the Director's Cut enhances some of the combat potential, adds some new story areas, and even has a very much "this place is definitely inspired to feel like a sneaking mission" expansion among all kinds of other shit.

Its well worth it I think and despite the long wait for it to come to PC, they did a very good job with the port and even made it so that owners of the non Director's Cut could upgrade for like $10 and import their saves if they wished!

I think with the DC you can use the music player after a certain point, provided you're not on a mission or step into a situation that "overrides" it. If I'm wrong, then I am absolutely sure there is a mod that exposes it. Also exchange the Bridges cap. I was actually wavering on buying the ACRONYM jacket (which, for being stupidly expensive are actually quite well made) but sadly they sold out of what I hoped would be my size and have never restocked.

        >PC

Im possibly being moronic here but i don't think you can truly enjoy the games visuals and vistas on a tiny PC monitor, one of the best things about it was playing it on a huge ass TV comfortably in my couch with a good audio setup(add poverty to the filter list for death stranding), really added to the immersion and grandeur. It's one of the most beautiful looking games ever made imo

          Anonymous

size =/= quality. console can't output the picture quality of a mid range PC, especially on a game that's actually optimized well for PC like death stranding is.

          Anonymous

I've not had a "tiny" PC monitor for years where the average is 27"+ and you're sitting close to it, , but even now one of the best monitors you can find for quality gaming (and even at a decent price) is the LG OLED C2 is a 42" TV (that also works well as a monitor, is 4K, 120hz Gsync/FreeSync, HDR, etc)

but yeah, even if that wasn't my monitor you can connect any PC to a TV in another room if you wish or if you have a receiver of some sort (a PC, set top box, even your phone etc) you can connect to a TV, you can use SteamPlay streaming across your house (or depending on your connections even online).

It is by definition a walking simulator, that being said, it was very enjoyable to navigate the map. I liked how structures/roads from other peoples saves would be added on to yours to make it feel like everyone was trying to reconnect the U.S. I still dont think it was worth full price because it is a slow burn but thats just me. Play and enjoy it yourself.

  28. 10 months ago
    Anonymous

    I think it's pretty good.
It's a strange game in that it sort of gets easier the more you play it. There really isn't too much of a challenge unless you're trying to 5 star each delivery, and even that gets really easy in the endgame once you've built the tools you need to get those deliveries done quickly.
    But it's a nice game.
It has some cool and very unique game mechanics that deserve to be explored more: the game simulates the weight of your backpack, and all the equipment on your body, and you literally need to balance yourself as you hike.
Basically it's a great hiking simulator and most of the challenge comes from planning an effective hiking trip through the mountains, and being able to react well when your plan gets upended by a giant oil whale squid.

director's cut made early games easier and lets you use ziplines with a floating cart

  34. 10 months ago
    Anonymous

I loved the outdoor aspect of the game: rebuilding roads, crossing streams and waterfalls, hiking in deep snow across mountains, rushing through the rain, finding rare loot on the ground to deliver, ambience of the forest, etc. I ended up 100% completing the game with all the optional deliveries on the hardest difficulty and had ziplines to practically every important delivery location. Sometimes there are cinematic moments where ambience turns down, music turns up and camera pans out like in the very beginning, those moments can be done well, but often I'm zooming so fast they don't last long

HOWEVER much of the game is a festing hot pile of shit: the story, the cutscenes, the characters, the character names, the boss fights, war flashbacks(spoiler), that stupid fricking baby on your chest that cries all the time (I usually flatlined the bastard so he'd shut up until I went back to base to rest). The ghost monsters (I would get caught on purpose so they'd frick off for atleast a minute or however long they despawn for)

I bought the expansion but haven't played it yet since it came out on PC not long after my 100% completion. Maybe I'll have to play through it again sometimes. I'd say watch some video of the gameplay (not the cutscenes) and you'll have a good idea if you'll enjoy it or not
