Got into Magic in January and I was really into it for a while.

Got into Magic in January and I was really into it for a while. I was playing with friends, getting new cards and decks, researching a lot, going to FNMe etc. But now I just feel like it was a massive waste. I spend nearly 1.5k on fricking cardboard for a game where the creators don't give a shit, the competitive circuit is filled with cheaters and angle shooters and what passes as R&D is a joke. How do I get over this feeling of embarrassment I wasted half a year on this garbage game?

you're right anon. i honestly don't know how you got tricked into play latter day magic in two thousand and fricking twentythree. magic hasnt been good for well over a decade now. i suggest you liquidate your cardboard for as much as possible and look into finding a decent game or a new hobby altogether. Genuinely how did you get tricked into investing in mtg at this point? Were you completely unfamiliar with tcgs before this? Who introduced you to it? Can you take petty vengeance on them?

Yes pretty much, I've only vaguely heard of it and thought getting into a social irl game would be better than non-stop videogames. The more I learned about wotc and their current shit makes me feel like a moron. At least some of the art on lands are pretty cool.

well at least you have the defense of ignorance. mtg used to be a good game but that time has LONG since passed. When it comes to table top games theres plenty of tcgs though many a rife with israeliteery and by the sound of it you're fairly susceptible. If you intend to keep looking into tcgs more careful research might be in order. You might also consider board games and TTRPGs, since both of those can fill the in person niche but have less vectors for mr.sheckleberg to swindle you. Any many game stores seem to have events and open game nights to attract people to those sorts of things with low/no monetary barrier to entry.

MtG is for people who have friends who play Magic. If you try to get into Magic on your lonesome you are wasting your time, it simply isn't worth playing outside of a kitchen table setting.

Or any year to be honest. Like, from this point foward, people should be shamed for playing (or still playing Magic). If they are willing to send the Pinkertons then anything can get and WILL be worse.

I don’t disagree but I got ‘back’ into it for two reasons: foremost because it’s THE TCG sold everywhere right next to YGO and Pokemon and so you’re never far from a locals.
The second is related to the first: I’d LIKE to just play with anime-inspired cards but Wixoss is dead, Weiss’ anime screenshots are cheapass and Vanguard is dead AND just as expensive as Magic so I’d rather play what’s still active. At least my LGS’ open draft and play nights usually have upwards of 20+ people.

this is true, i tried to get into Magic in 2015 at my local game store. The reception was cold to the point of openly hostile. Had fun opening some packs though.

Unfortunately most of their money is made on people like you who are introduced to the game and don't have the knowledge to know just how powercrept and moneyhungry it's gotten. We've all been there.

What's the best and cheapest way of selling your card collection? I've been thinking of cashing out of this game for a while but not sure how to go about it other than selling to your LGS at a huge loss or painstakingly listing only the expensive cards on ebay or something, neither option sounds good.

Been playing since like 2003 maybe. Off and on with fairly large stints of off. Ended up spending like $6k on the game this past year buying duals and RL shit, then kinda lost interest and stopped playing a month or so ago. It comes in waves, you'll probably drop it and get back into it over time and should hold onto your collection. It sucks having a deck then selling it then getting back into it years later and those cards have 10x in price since then.

$1500 in 6months?? For something you dont truly grasp, you sure are the current target demographic.

Since you are on HRT and are surrounded but moronic friends who did not advise you at all, ill give you some help.

Sell your cards as fast as you can, why? Because at the current printing rate they will be outclassed and therefore worth less.
You have to put some effort unto this, why? Because MTG cards are not as easy as they say to liquidate, when a troon friend of yours says "i have 10k worth of cardboard" it would take him maybe years to get rid of that shit for far less than he claims. Given the state of the game and the options people have now, sellling is harder.

honestly as much as this triggers my nostalgia, it's still pretty mediocre even in the best of circumstances. magic is a game that needs a lot of help to even feel worth dusting off. in theory with a good cube and good friends under the right circumstances it can be alright, but that's true of a hell of a lot of games. it's basically just serving as an excuse to hang out, and you'd be having fun no matter what you were playing.

I mean garfield himself had done the tcg model much better service, multiple times, before 2000. by comparison to the play experience of games like netrunner or vampire, magic feels like a fricking alpha test. the beginnings of some good ideas, but nothing that had been brought to its full potential.

Nah mate, you spent that on a hobby, a social activity. That's not a bad pricetag for 6 months of being really into something.
    >playing with friends
Just keep doing that if it makes you happy. If magic isn't a good enough game where you can enjoy it with strangers in a tournament, at least it's good enough to act as an activity to bring your social group together?

      >That's not a bad pricetag for 6 months of being really into something.

Yes it is. Spending 1500 on a card game is moronic no matter how you cut it.
Hope you learned something from this experience, OP.

I spent about $1500 on Magic in the mid 90s, mostly buying out the collections of people like OP.

Let's just say I do not regret it.

        >Spending 1500 on a card game
Like poker night with the boys? Come on now. You'd spend that much on buying into lots of hobbies in the first six months. Hiking, camping, golf, tennis. It's not that bad. Hell, you'd be lucky to get a nice little holiday abroad for that, and that's over in a week.

          Anonymous

I think you could make that argument if it aligned with most people's experience of the game. but having actually been there it comes off as very rose tinted. for a lot of players it's more like feeding $1500 in to a slot machine and coming away with nothing but an empty feeling (and when you play poker with the boys at least *somebody* wins). and the reality is a lot of magic players end up spending a great deal more than that. it's both an extraordinarily expensive hobby and one which tends to disguise how much people are actually spending. it's not a big purchase like a pair of skis or a new bike, it bleeds you slow.

There's also the competition to consider. Magic stands out even among its own class as being one of the clunkiest designed, worst balanced ccgs, while simultaneously being one of the most expensive. It's like the crappily sweatshop-made designer handbag of the gaming hobby. you're paying a hell of a premium for that branding.

Can't say I miss having to be very vigilant every time an opponent shuffled his deck, which is every time in a meta filled with fetch lands, but at least it was something. There's nothing to keep someone who wants to grind local and district tournaments now.

I still remember the old days fondly, racing to the lgs after school and browsing magic dojo at the store pc. I was happy.
