encounter design can be obnoxious but that's inherent for DQ/FF
Story itself isn't all that great but the way it's delivered is 10/10
and yes as much as people will seethe about this the Sphere Grid is BASED

I disagree about the story and the characters.

Were it not for the hallway design ff10 would truly be one of the best final fantasies.

where as ff13 has the same linearity but many more issues.

If ff13 hadn’t shit the bed story-wise I would be perfectly fine with the linearity. Gameplay was fun as frick but by the end you were literally like “who am I fighting and why and what is happening and isn’t this exactly what we’ve been trying to avoid the whole time oh and but then we are saved by literal deus ex machina that also had no explanation other that ‘lul muh goddess.’” I’m still burned by it.

It is one of the best, linearity is not bad by itself as long as you have things to do to break the monotiny. Depends on whether you like blitzball I guess.

FFXIII shit the bed in every possible way, combat is literally press x to win, not a single break from the hallways ever except to press x for a while, the story is stupid and unnecessarily convoluted, the characters speak for themselves (Sazh is cool though), the leveling system is as linear as the map, shops and npc's dont exist, half the game mechanics are locked behind a 15 hour tutorial, fricking Hope, shitty bad guy and 2 fricking sequels(??WHY??).
Don't bother arguing with me on this, I will never not hate that game.

X-2 is dumb and a cash grab, but it's not THAT bad.

Yes it is, it's so far removed from what fans of the first game would have wanted (girl power Charlies angels pop idol yay!), set in a different world with different characters you would never think to associate it with FF. The gameplay might be good, but I cared so little about the story that I stopped playing 2/3 of the wsy through.

The Crimson Squad was alright, I think. I just wish their plot was attached to a better constructed narrative.

the combat system in XII took way too long for the depth to develop but it is absolutely not "press X" to win. In fact its probably one of the least "press X to win" games in the series since you don't have the typical characters who just have super high attack stats that make most encounters trivial

XIII was a linear trek around lifeless locations.
X had similar linearity, but at least it was a pilgrimage of memorable towns and other places.

There are some important misses, like the moronic story and character design, but there were a lot of strengths as well. Battles and dress spheres were a lot of fun, the open ended nature of the game from early on was very nice as well, even if the side missions were sometimes really shitty. It's still not a game I can call good, but it's alright.

My only gripe with this game is that people can't breath underwater for long periods of time. It's completely unbelievable.

    >great story

The set-up and established lore is fine, but the story has messy writing all over the place. Before we even start talking about the actual issues in the main plot, here's something just from the early section of the game.

    >Al Bhed are established as a hated minority
    >Yuna is established as a celebrity due to being a Summoner and daughter of a High Summoner
    >despite that, the Al Bhed are able to kidnap Yuna in broad daylight in the second biggest city in Spira
    >this is on a day where the Pope and one of the three sub-Popes are visiting this city
    >in addition to that, the Al Bhed set up killer robots around town
    >in addition to that, the Al Bhed decide to ransom Yuna, against their MO, so that they can win a sports game against a team that has lost every game they've ever played ever

I see where you're coming from, but I'm willing to excuse it based on game-play purposes.

It's either we play a match of blitzball or we have to keep the story lively by going on a rescue mission.

We had to play a game of Blitzball anyway in the end, though it mercifully wasn't against the Psyches.

It's also weird that the Al Bed are kidnapping the Summoners so they don't fight Sin, but then Sin just gets to go around unopposed. It's kind of a weird plot beat, because it'd make more sense if that was put before Operation Mi'ihen, but you kind of need that to be the big early game moment to show off Sin's power. So I don't really know how to fix that, even if the Al Bhed are basically causing the deaths of more people via Sin to save the lives of a handful of Summoners.

And yeah, letting the Summoners kill themselves is a long-term bad plan, but the alternative they present is non-existent. We're just going to stop the Summoners and not have any other plans to use against Sin.

Isn't ther solution to use tech to kill sin?

Their plan was Operation Mi'ihen, but that was done early on before the plot thread about Summoners being kidnapped really had much focus. After that, they didn't have a Plan B or, at least, the story didn't present one. It's not until the party decides to use the Hymn to pacify Jecht that they have a backup plan.
