Grim Dawn:

why is it so slept on Gankerros? Objectively one of the best ARPGs only second to maybe Last Epoch (this is theoretically, as it stands GD> but it could change when Last Epoch actually launches). The classes and class fusion system are kino and the DLCs are genuinely good content for once. and of course modding is a huge boon

any thoughts from fellow actiontards?

Its character building is great but it needs more things to actually do, and more ways to get items
I don't wanna grind forever for build enabling purples

isn't that something you can fix with mods? I've seen plenty of gear adjust ones/drop rate too. Can provide links if you want

I've not seen any good content mods to date. A few good mods in general sure, but nothing that actually adds new monsters to fight or encounters to beat. Most I've seen are class mods and miscellaneous things like additional hero spawns
Link me what you're thinking of though

same anon here, sorry for the dump. I was surprised that you said there's no good content mods cause some of these Mastery mods really make things super interesting (plus loot mods). I surmise that actually creating new areas or enemies themselves is too much work but trust me, these are some really enjoyable mods. hope you give them a shot

Campaign is the best part. Endgame is much lower quality. I played last epoch and I think it has potential to be a great game. Too close to PoE maybe, but I can't fricking stand how horrible drops are to encourage currency farming and trading. I fricking hate trading.

Character building isn't that great to be honest. It was interesting when titan quest came out and I was disappointed how they just completely copied the system. Also, the animations are janky, ugly, boring setting.

probably Epoch, that's a common gripe I've heard from all the earlyaccesstards. but I mean my PoE playing friends are also seething over shit "balance" changes and drop rates as well so 50/50 perhaps

Certain aspects of the game leave impression as if they are made for PoE style multiplayer economy.
Take double rare MIs for example, finding one with affixes properly synergizing with base and each other is once in few thousands hours occurrence. And it will most likely be something for build completely different from yours, and therefore useless for you. This is something you would sell for stacks of cash if economy existed.
Perhaps at some point there were plans to make it into multiplayer game, but they decided to drop it.

people do trade through online multiplayer but in the case of extreme RNG it is quite rare. I think it's definitely a net positive there is no marketplace though

Grim Dawn isn't slept on. Some people love it, some people don't, but when people talk about ARPGs Grim Dawn will inevitably be brought up and someone will come out to talk about how good it is.
It's just that it's a complete game at the end of its lifespan in a genre that isn't actually popular outside of a few running service titles. Most Diablo players never give another ARPG a fair chance to start, they won't even seriously try Path of Exile or Lost Ark. They're certainly not going to try Grim Dawn. But for what it is, Grim Dawn is absolutely at the peak of the love it can feasibly get.

interesting take anon, do you really think that ARPGs are that niche of a genre though? Last Epoch is only in EA and doing well already and even though Path of Exile shit the bed it still maintains a fair playerbase.

interesting you bring up Lost Ark, it's an MMO but is the combat really more ARPG style? I was under the impression it played like traditional big name MMOs.

it's great, but it's old as frick that we've talked about it to death
It had a /vg/ thread and everything, but a single player game with no big updates for a while will eventually stop having consistent discussion
so yeah, see you the next time someone mentions it and everyone has to say how good it is/was

Because its purely made to be played in single player. Since the multiplayer is janky and crashes at times.

Also i love the game. But if i had a gripe with it, its the 94 sets. They are awesome and build defining, but having to play a completely different build all the way to 94 just to test a set feels like shit. They should have 100% made inbetween sets for any build defining set. Some sort of low level version that offers the same stats but at drastically lower values.

      Anonymous

can't you just use custom game/mod whatever you want in to test it? I've seen my friend do it

        Anonymous

Well yea, you can. But i like playing the game without it since i enjoy the process of figuring out what works and what does not, which includes the leveling bits. Since i like to check what speeds up the progress and what slows it down etc.

          Anonymous

so you're complaining about something you've chosen to do that you think is a problem? I mean yes level 94 is a pretty steep climb but you can always be respecing every now and then on your leveling journey

            Anonymous

No, i have chosen to play the game as the devs designed it. I don't want to use 3rd party tools to fix things and then pretend that the game is great because i had to go out of my way to fix it myself.
Also im talking about gear that drastically changes builds. Not just a little respec. Like pure phys amarastas blade burst. There is nothing that enables that playstyle untill you hit 94. And its just stupid.

              Anonymous

fair enough I guess, you can always map your build out and use as closely similar gear as you can if you REALLY don't want to mod or use console

                Anonymous

I don't have issues with 94 sets that have simmilar gear. If you talk about something like ulzuins set. Which is a fire focused set for demolitionist. Fine, that has plenty of other fire based items troughout the leveling process.

What about spellscourge. The physical arcanist set. Phys arcanist has legit no single item all the way to 94. Its too much of a all or nothing gear swap, and it bothers me that there are no stepping stones for that type of set.

                Anonymous

ok I'm starting to understand your point more, yeah i would agree that there could be more radical build-changing Epics/Legendaries before 94. maybe even ones that sort of resemble the 94 sets

                Anonymous

Yea, it feels like a bit of a wasted opportunity with how they split items into blue and purple. I would have expected the lvl 94 purple sets to have a lvl 50 blue equivalent. But yea, its not like its a massive downside of the game. Its just a personal issue i have with its gearing, considering the rest of the itemization is really great.

                Anonymous

yeah fair critique, I'm a big fan of the game's gearing as well but I agree that certain build-defining things could be more easily accessible (while still maintaining effort to earn it)

You can grab the stone thing that unlocks all difficulties from the 3rd expansion merchant in ultimate. And if you use it, it will give you all the skill points/stat points from normal and elite difficulty and unlock all portals, so you can then just take your lvl 1 char straight into ult. Won't fully solve your issue, but you will only have to play trough the campaign once since ult now scales from lvl 1 to 120.

I have done this and it's so hard since you start at 0 vs legendary enemies.

          Anonymous

I did it a few times, its only really hard at the start, since you get lvls like crazy which scales the enemies, but you are not getting gear at the same rate. You do have to play a really good build tho.

i hate that there's no middleground in this game

your build either blows up the entire screen with insane chain effects and AOE spread and boss melting numbers
or your build gets stuck left clicking rares and uniques for 10 minutes
there's nothing that's just a cozy inbetween where it's neither a slog or a pushover, you're either completely nuking the planet or sucking complete ass

build exploration feels terrible because of this. it doesn't help that it feels like every build is 'balanced' around endgame purples that turn the build on or off and it's just unplayable until that point

game is enjoyable if you stick to the ~10 solved meta combinations but goes downhill so fricking hard if you stray from it

        >r play whatever you like. if you are good it will work
that's the problem, it doesn't work unless you have very specific drops early on or follow specific build strategies like dumping all-in on one specific skill at the expense of ignoring everything else the class can do

i'm not asking for one-skill-wonders where people can just tick every skillbox and get away with it, but it's fricking boring when every character is just defined by a 22/22 stack into specific relevant abilities that weren't nerfed and abandoned by the developers

Are you sure you are talking about GD? It's pretty well-balanced. Highly optimized build will have perhaps 3 times higher performance than meme build in GD. For comparison, for PoE we're talking about difference in HUNDREDS of times.

Have you seen how many games are in the genre? It's all niche as frick, and Grimdawn is either highly regarded by folks or written off as boring. Personally I love it. The campaign flows really well, and it's always nice to see Eldritch influences in a setting.
