silently cancelled. pretty sure the company is on the verge of bankruptcy. if it actually does come out it will be a mess and never get fixed because this shit underperforming will be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Hades sold well and they have Timmybux, no way
But before Hades they were probably in trouble

The reason why they took the EGS deal was probably actual financial trouble to develop a new game after Pyre, which was just too weird a premise and ended up not selling well.

i get that supergiant was happy to finally get some huge mainstream success, but they easily could have used the enormous amount of hades money to make a completely different game and people will would have bought it

Hades has some of the most phoned in gameplay Ive ever seen in a roguelite. Runs are incredibly samey because you can only have 1 boon for each ability and upgrades are reset on picking up other boons. I thought the weapon upgrades post game would add some variation but of course in roguelite fashion you need 500 titan blood for a single fricking upgrade

Agreed, tho I beat Hades 7 someodd times. Needs a sequel to iron that out

youre supposed to be going for the significant secondary/tertiary/duo/legendary boons with the actual big changes
      >upgrades are reset
      only primary ones

runs are only samey if you somehow manage to completely miss the fricking point

Where did this narrative that Epic has infinite money come from?

      Anonymous

      Who the frick said that?
They stopped buying exclusives because it was a massive investment that wasn't repaying, so they clearly don't have the kind of money where you can just throw it away forever like a Microsoft does.

Everyone in this thread was implying that Supergiant will be able to bounce back when this game underperforms simply because they're owned by Epic. The general consensus here seems to be that Epic can afford to just throw them a billion dollars to try again after they fail. Are we the only two here that see the reality of the situation which is that this studio will get shutdown in less than 3 months after they sell below 1 million copies?

          >the reality of the situation which is that this studio will get shutdown in less than 3 months after they sell below 1 million copies
They have 23 employees. Hades sold over 1 mln copies already. They can release Hades 2 for free and still stay afloat.

I'm taking the stance that even if the game did flop, it wouldn't make Supergiant go bankrupt even without Epic. Hades was absurdly successful, they're a very small studio, and they'd just be reusing a lot of the work that went into the first game to make a sequel. There's no reason to believe that the fate of their company hinges on a single game's release.

            >There's no reason to believe that the fate of their company hinges on a single game's release.
There's no reason to believe anything in the modern gaming landscape other than patterns. This same exact thing has been said about countless other studios recently that seemed like they were doing just fine then got killed overnight. Almost always due to 1 game underperforming.

          >Are we the only two here that see the reality of the situation
Clearly not, because you are a fricking moron disconnected from reality.
First of all, Supergiant is not owned by Epic. Epic doesn't even have stake in the studio. Their sole relationship with Epic was that, after Pyre came out and presumably underperformed, they saw Timmy handing out huge cheques for people to put their game for a year in his store and took it so they could develop their next one without massively downsizing in scope because Pyre left them in a precarious situation.
And on that note they also took the 1-year exclusivity and made that year the early access year, meaning when the game did come out properly with all of its content, it was simultaneously on Steam anyway. Boss move, IMO.
Secondly, there is no basis to think Hades 2 will underperform, or that the studio would close down if it did. As mentioned before Supergiant is small and independent; there's the owner, a few programmers, the chick who does all the drawings and Logan Cunningham. If they didn't shut down after Pyre, Hades 2 would have to sell a negative number of copies to bring the studio under, which will not happen because, unless it becomes Silksong-tier vaporware, Hades 2 will sell a lot. Maybe not as much as the first one, but definitely enough to keep the studio afloat and then some.

      It's called owning Fortnite.

They have fortnite and unreal engine which both make a lot of money. They often paid largeish devs to put their games on EGS exclusively (for a limited time). They would have had to pay them a lot because these devs surely know that they would get a lot more sales and free publicity if they used steam immediately. They have slowed down with this practice but I would suggest that's because it didn't work, not because they ran out of money. But I don't know for sure.

        Anonymous

"Ran out" is probably not the case but, much like giants like Sony and MS have budgets dedicated to acquisition deals and whatnot I imagine Epic had an exclusivity bribe budget that ran out and, since the EGS is still barely more than a Fortnite launcher in the eyes of 99.9% of consumers, they didn't allocate any more money to the task.

Hades 2 or Metaphor: which one is going to be GOTY?

Hades. Metaphor will flop and Atlus will continue milking the same type of Persona games for eternity as it takes advantage of clueless weebs

I'm an Atlus fan but I don't have very high hopes for Metaphor. Whenever they try to do these "Persona but not really" games like Tokyo Mirage Sessions or Soul Hackers 2 (yes obviously I know Soul Hackers existed before Persona, but it's obvious what audience SH2 was going for) they end up mediocre at best.

It's a quarter 2 early access release so they'll probably have an announcement in the next month and then open it up in June.
