wait what the fuck how would unity know if the game is installed?
unity games don't actually need "installers" you can get the files and just drag the game files to a folder and play.

so this must mean that Unity is infecting every game build with DRM?

        Anonymous

Yeah, they've become DRM: destroyer of pcs but in reality it would just affect Steam who would be forced to make Unity's homework in telling which user did what.

        Anonymous

        >so this must mean that Unity is infecting every game build with DRM?
Are you all seriously unaware that every Unity game has shipped with telemetry for years? It's a default option that devs can't even turn off. They've clearly just stuck some extra shit in there to phone home and give them a hwid or something which they will compare to their existing database and bam, if you're a new user the dev gets hit with another 20c charge on their account.

          Anonymous

there's telemetry but it was never built with this business model in mind. it's going to be a shitshow regardless. i expect most big companies are going to drag this shit into court and try to exhaust unity into giving up, because this shit is extremely shady. i doubt we'll even get that far

            Anonymous

Most big companies will likely settle this privately.
Do you honestly think Unity will dare to mess with Mickey Mouse?

              Anonymous

yeah it's possible they will, but they will likely first drag them into a legal battle because it puts pressure on unity and they know they have the advantage. all they need to do is stall for time since they know unity will eventually budge for a pittance. i don't think we will even get that far because someone at unity will inevitably do the math and realize they will lose more money than they will gain from all these attempted shakedowns.

                Anonymous

no they won't because there is no legal argument against what they are doing. gays being assmad on x is not a legal argument

                Anonymous

legal arguments are more or less meaningless as long as they are not comically retarded. unity's argument is just barely solid enough to drag this shit into court but not much beyond that. their plan is to threaten legal action and hope for the best. but for whatever reason they are doing the equivalent of patent trolling with like 10 of the biggest game companies in the world

i still think the "CEO's retirement plan + incompetent nepo baby business grads" theory makes the most sense

I'd imagine conjuring up a new bullshit fee that wasn't part of the original license wouldn't survive in court. At best Unity can tell you to not use their engine anymore, just like if you quit your subscription.

unity has had built in telemetry for a long time now its very easy for a program to ping back at home base everytime you play it, its extremely simple technology

          Anonymous

there's no DRM notice on the store page of any unity games. that should really be addressed.

            Anonymous

telemetry isn't DRM, it doesn't prevent you from using the software, it just tells unity that you did.
Also, pretty much every game made in the last 10 years or so, unity or not, phones home.

              Anonymous

If you want to take an extremely literal and pedantic approach you could say telemetry is a form of DRM depending on your definition of "rights" and "management" but yeah that would be kind of missing the point.

I dont understand why they are going about this in such a roundabout way? do they want a cut of the profits? just charge a percentage per sale like steam/epic does. Why track this weird metric of 'installs'? do they not want to be paid if someone doesnt play a game?

They can't actually track any of that shit, their telemetry plan is still a total "dude trust me bro" black box.
They're basically demanding they get to make up a number every month that each dev has to pay them, and they don't tell you how they arrived at that number.

              Anonymous

They already admitted they can't track end user information, so they have absolutely no clue what's a reinstall and what's a normal install.

You dont have to question how it works, they have a FAQ on how it works. And it works exactly like that.

          Anonymous

But their FAQ does acknowledge that malicious installs like this can happen.

        Anonymous

        That’s actually how it works.
It’s 0.2$ every time there is an install. If someone installs it and then reinstalls it, it’s 0.4$

        >angry female character in important position
        500x reinstall
        >a loudmouth black character
        2000x reinstall for each
        >nonwhite protagonist
        5000x reinstall
        >interracial relationship
        10000x reinstall
        >overtly homosexual character
        10000x reinstall
        >uglified female character
        25000x reinstall
        >trans character
        50000x reinstall
        >game developers make a public statement supporting any of the above
        50000x reinstall
        >in-game graphics downgraded compared to advertised graphics
        50000x reinstall
this is how i will vote with my wallet in Unity videogames
i can automate this procedure into costing developers thousands of dollars a day easily
don't want to go broke devs? watch yourselves

You’re gonna need to reinstall your games a lot more than that, though of course it’ll be automated.
500 installs will only cost the company 100$. If you want to actually put a dent in their company, you need to install games in the millions.

500 a day. one autist. 178,000 a year. 35,600 a year. Youre right, thats not a ton of money. but thats one autist. get a second computer? get 3 friends?
A group of ten computers sink more than a quarter million dollars. An indie studio is fucking gone. Even on a reasonable scale, you can destroy any small company. Even bigger studios will start caring if a bunch of bad actors get pissed. 50 angry Russian bots could drain a millions a year. im glad, unity fucking sucks and i want to see it sink. this is crazy to think everyone wont jump ship.

            Anonymous

You wouldn't even need that. Just run a packet sniffer during install, capture it, and then send it to the unity server hundreds of times a second.
That's assuming this isn't just a screen for unity to make up whatever numbers they want.

This is why the world is so faggy nowadays, because instead of trying to educate people you find undesirable you just want to alienate them all. You might be able to remove trannies from the limelight but if you really think you can somehow erase blacks and women from media you're as mentally ill as the trannies. There are lots of chud games to be found in unity if you bother to use the google search engine to see for yourself. I will admit though that you are true to some extent. Chuds are incapable of using a computer properly because they lack the brain capacity.
Therefore, there are not many chud games to be found in unity, and consequently, no chud is gonna to abuse Unity's new shit system.
However, we with the knowledge, not only we can scare the chuds away from making videogames, but we can also push the devs that are trying to be inclusive with their games to be even more inclusive and even more progressive. Unity's latest misstep and a frog's shitpost can finally be the way for the LGBTQ community to have total control over the indie industry and use it more actively to stop the bigotry and spread the message of love and acceptance.

wait what the fuck how would unity know if the game is installed?
unity games don't actually need "installers" you can get the files and just drag the game files to a folder and play.

And the age of shittily optimized Unreal Fortnite lighting has begun!!

        Anonymous

        This
People think that low talent indies will go away when Unreal is the more no-code friendly engine.
Whats going to happen is that unity indie devs just bump up the price of their games, other devs see this and follow suit even if they don't use Unity.
        5$ game is now 15$
        10$ game is now 20$
        20$ game is now a 30$
and AAA devs will see how the price floor has risen and take this excuse to jump from 70$'s to 80$/90$

          Anonymous

Raising the price of games won't solve anything with how retarded this policy is. Under the structure as described and re-clarified one disgruntled retard uninstalling and reinstalling a pirated copy of the game over and over again could fold any company with a Unity game.

If they were just going to charge for an initial installation, charging the same fee for each individual purchase would essentially be the same thing. Seems more like to me they just said some legalese mumbojumbo to make it sound better on paper, while still being able to go through with the initial plan eventually down the line. Otherwise there's no real point in basing it off of installs, unless they somehow plan on getting money for every pirated copy, which I don't see how that's possible as generally cracked .exes remove telemetry data. Or even how it's legal, considering there was no authorized sale to be "taxed."

Someone has to distribute games with unity telemetry off and that would be illegal, so no software distribution service like steam, epic or ms store, as well as no store that sells physical copies of games will do it. It is pretty much "upload it straight to torrents" route, but that doesn't pay

Congratulations, if you've run a Unity game in the past decade you've had their telemetry run too - because it is a nonoptional component of any Unity exe.

You absolutely can, but that doesn't fucking matter at all for 2 reasons.
              1) 99.9% of end users won't, because they don't know or care about this, and likely have no idea what engine a game runs on.
              2) Unity is not, will not, and does not have to disclose how they're getting their numbers and will charge whatever they think they can get away with. They likely have some bullshit extrapolation that takes into account 'power users' and people with shite internet.

Evidently they believe they can get away with it, because that's what their doing.

Streaming Unity Games counts as installations so both Twitch and YouTube streamers are affected by this.

    >Install definition

    >The installation and initialization of a game or app on an end user’s device as well as distribution via streaming is considered an “install.” Games or apps with substantially similar content may be counted as one project, with installs then aggregated to calculate the Unity Runtime Fee.

    >Each game or app’s cumulative install amount cannot be reset or reduced even if it has been sold, transferred to a new party, changed its name, been republished as a new version, added expansion content, or had its unique identifier (e.g., BundleID) altered. Additionally, a change in publisher or distributor does not reset the cumulative install amount.

Luckily for me a lot of people still value parasocial relationships, so until humans completely change mindsets and forgo humanity, I'll always have some sort of clientele, that's what I think at least.

generally service contacts are written so that if they change the contract you need to agree to the new terms and conditions to continue to use the service

they can procedures in the law to use secret information like this in the lawsuit. the methods need to be disclosed in the court but they don't need to be disclosed to the public. also they can include language in the initial contract to force you into an nda if sued.

US judges are put through programs to teach them that corporate freedom is the essential pillar of US democracy, even if, or especially if sometimes, it violates the freedoms of the clients or is only possible from holding a monopoly.

US judged do uphold the ToS. It seems unbelievable, but yes, they absolutely do. If you want to use the monopoly service, you implicitly "agree" and the system will punish you for upsetting the monopoly, every time.

        Anonymous

In this case it would be big corporations suing Unity though, so the judge would probably rule whichever way makes the most corporations happy i.e. against Unity.

          Anonymous

No. The larger corporations will make a special deal with Unity and the judge will masturbate about how smart all the lawyers are to be on retainer. He'll say it's so good, it's such a working system, so much better than anti-trust laws.

And then he'll ask the smaller companies why they're stupid and don't have lawyers on retainer, getting them special contracts, like the smart, very good, successful companies did.

The fact that money is the obvious answer won't register because if you don't have money you don't get freedoms. People without money are not a pillar of this nation's success, they are just holding back al, the good, smart companies, however few of them there are.

              Anonymous

Probably becomes an industry standard in more areas and unless you're working for a major corporate monopoly, if you make something you might be on the hook to pay someone higher in the social strata rent as punishment. And the company you're paying rent to will probably get bailouts and tax cuts in the next financial disaster while you won't.

Less stuff will be made and what is made will be lower quality.

The Democrats have been a largely neoliberal party since the 70's, when they started stabbing al, the unions jn the back. Some of the most potent pro-corporate initiatives were led by Democratic presidents and congresses. They couldn't have so completely unfastened the New Deal if the Democrats hadn't wanted that.

That's why the party can't seem to win elections in spite of Republicans pretty much wearing fascism on their sleeves. They've spent years supporting corporate agendas so they could get funding and votes from the right, but now they don't know what they stand for and some of them probably still don't know why Hillary was unpopular.

Now you're saying I have to pay $2,040 per year in order to keep that "feature", and on top of that you plan on charging me ~20 cents per install (for my games that sell for $1-$3). I don't care about or plan to use any of the new features your PRO brings to the table. I will probably take advantage of the 1-year "PLUS price" upgrade to PRO, but I'm afraid these new changes definitely have me looking at your competitors for my future engine needs. 🙁

devs have to learn how to code again rather than relying on third party asset flips
Wishful thinking. Everyone knows this will only accelerate the push for ~~*TPM*~~ adoption.

The majority will likely be switching to Godot because its FOSS nature avoids this situation from happening again and its big 4.0 update released earlier this year

Don't worry, I'll make sure to put a /s at the end next time to accomodate you, just like your reddit xisters do.

I don't know why I'm supposed to be happy about this, there are a bunch of Unity games I genuinely like.

What makes people think that they're entitled to use someone else's game engine for free?

      >Just because I have allowed ships to pass along my riverfront property for years without charge, they say I cannot now draw a chain across the river and extract rent? I own the land, it is MY river property after all!

The tech sector is mainly just reinventing things that were illegal for a reason. It's reasonable to ask a fee up front, but frankly unconscionable to let companies fully develop their products with your engine for free so that you could unilaterally alter the contract and rape them. Especially if this can be done by every other software jn the process.

The fact that they already pay $185 per developer a month to use the fucking engine?
