Half life discussion continued from since Ganker is shit and there was still a lot of discussion going on.

Keep debating hl1 vs hl2 and post some mod recommendations for both games.

So what deleted content did they add back?

      Anonymous

mostly nostalgia stuff like original main menu and the old non hd models that blue shit replaced. they also added some of the old beta player models like ivan. there's some new MP maps added too but overall the biggest thing from this update is the new hud scaling for higher resolutions,

small detail only I probably bothered to notice, in the beginning when you have to dodge that one laser before you get the crowbar, in the WON version it slices through a barny corpse and he's bisected, usually the steam version he just gibs, now he bisects again, so i guess they added that back?

        Anonymous

that was a long-standing bug that was fixed more than removing cut content, loads of them

  2. 2 weeks ago

The update is nice and all, but I got the WON version to look exactly the same under xash3d with all the fixes and even overbright working.
I prefer a standalone always offline solution rather than relying on steam, who knows when the next update breaks something.

HL2's combine soldiers are more intelligent than the marines but they dont get to show it off as often because theyre always put in enviroments where there AI doesnt get to shine as much

it also doesnt help that HL2 weapons variety is either total shit or borderline OP so you can go through waves of them

          Anonymous

tf2 is essentially abandonware along with l4d. they just push out community updates since nobody at valve wants to work on the games in any real capacity anymore. also csgo/cs2 are technically free to play games now and have been for years. people at valve get to choose what they want to work on so a lot it is projects that never actually see the light of day.

            >people at valve get to choose what they want to work on
and that's a problem. Logically if a few guys can update a 25 year old game and it's soon to be dead again multiplayer they can get more than one guy to work on tf2 and at the very least fix the bot issue
Valve is a key example of why the opposite extreme of EA everyone fantasizes about doesnt work either

                Anonymous

People already tried that with the dumb savetf2 shit and nothing happened unfortunately. Valve pretended to care, made a community update with maps people mostly don't play anymore, then called it a day.
It's even worse now since people are abusing v-script to make really low effort shitty content and valve is just accepting it blindly because they can push the shiny new v-script regardless

              Anonymous

The main problem with the bot issue is that bot makers are so fucking autistic that they will try find ways to combat any solution valve implements. Does this mean they shouldn't try? No, but it will be a long battle if they really get down to it.

                Anonymous

Updating the version of source engine tf2 is built on would fix it full-proof along with a myriad of other smaller quirks given that csgo had a similar bot issue and valve was able to fix it permanently, but valve is too lazy.

                Anonymous

I swear I saw people talking about bots still existing in CS2, just that it isn't as prevalent. Even then, as someone who has seen... the discussion... from bot makers for TF2 I can tell you that they want the game to die.

the engine updates are a huge undertaking. the cs2 launch was abysmal and it still has problems that cs:go never had. i think they should still do it but it's not a simple or quick procedure.

A transition from Source to Source 2 is I would assume a much bigger jump than transitioning from an old version of Source to a newer version. Of course I could be wrong, but it'd be worth the wait if it meant tf2 was better

        >esports demand that the game stay relatively static for consistency
It depends on what you mean by "relatively", but IMO esports players are way too whiny about this and devs care way too much about soothing them. Real-life sports change all the time, there are rule changes every year and lots of things that make games unpredictable, and reasons why you can't always compare records from past years to the current year. This is healthy evolution. But esports players are like autists that screech when their routine doesn't work exactly the same way for the 10000th time. Robotic execution and complete predictability are bad for sports and if esports want to be taken seriously they had better recognize it.

Can't believe it took me 25 years to realize that Half Life's flash light worked based on making the textures of the sector you are looking at lighter rather than being a dynamic light source.

      Anonymous

I don't think you are accurately describing how the flashlight works. It is a dynamic light source. Half-Life doesn't have "sectors." And what is the difference between being a light source and making the textures lighter? Isn't that what light source do? Maybe you are right but I suspect you do not have the technical info.

        Anonymous

I guess what I meant more to say is that they must have mapped out certain areas that if the flash light hits then it lights up the textures around it. It is why it jitters around as you look around especially if there are enemies nearby where it looks like it "locks" onto an enemy to light it up. It's not like say Doom 3 where it is a completely smooth process.

          Anonymous

I am not an expert but I am pretty sure the HL flashlight essentially spawns a dynamic light source, like a Quake 1 muzzle flash except continuous, at the point you are aiming at (within a certain range of course). I'm not sure what you mean by jitter, to me it always looks like a blob of light is moving around based on where I'm aiming, very obvious in vents for example. I found this forum post that claims to be the HL flashlight code, and yes it locks onto enemies but the stated rationale is so they are lit properly and that's because HL1's lighting for models is fairly primitive and not as smooth as the lighting on the environment.
          https://twhl.info/thread/view/17199

            Anonymous

Interesting and just shows how much they changed from Quake's engine. The jitter may be because of my eyesight, playing games recently has been a bit of a pain because of eye problems so that might be it.

              Anonymous

I just tested it and if by jitter you mean the way the light sometimes seems to jump, that's because the light blob only ever exists at one spot, at the intersection of an invisible ray from the center of your screen and a wall or whatever. So if you're looking at a super thin pole that's only 6" wide, the light will never spill around it the way a real light would, and if you aim slightly to the left or right of the column, the blob will instantly appear much farther away and no longer light the pole in front of you at all. But that's because it's drawing a single blob wherever you're pointing, and the blob only has a ~5' diameter. In other words, the flashlight "spawns", it does not "shine".

                Anonymous

I believe the light is also limited to vertex lighting which means it essentially paints over the triangles and not per pixel like modern engines. The lighting can only be as smooth as the polygons on model.

assuming it's a new bug but the door to this room is just open now and you don't even have to jump over the spinning sawblades.
Normally you do a laser puzzle where you blow up the wall to get to the other side but there's no need for it anymore.
