my hl/2/cs1.6/css are lost to time because they're on my steam account from pre gmail ubiquity so they're tied to my regional ISP email address from like 20 years ago that I have zero motivation or interest in attempting to retrieve

They should, provided they aren't tied to a Steam account yet, and I think at this point any key for HL, Blue Shift, and Opposing Force get you the Valve Classic Pack or whatever its called where its their GoldSrc engine games.

I don't tend to like first person shooters, especially because they give me stomach and headaches. But the little bit I played Half LiFE 2 for was fun. I've heard Half Life 1 is better, but I don't really know. I just want to play a peak FPS game just for the experience so that I never have to play one again. Also don't recommend Doom. It's ass. Legitimately, irrespective of headaches.
Doom is good, though.
But yes, if you had to play just one FPS in your life (and it wasn't Doom), Half-Life is an easy rec.

It was a limited amount of copies were given for free. After that limit was hit, it went back to $9.99.
If you own the box you can input the cd key to steam and get all the half life engine games.
Pretty sure a bunch of russains/chinks made bot accounts to buy out all the free keys.
Watch as the key site markets gets flooded with offers to sell accounts with Half Life in the accounts.
Or you could just wait a couple weeks and get Half Life for $0.99 during the Christmas sales
