I can't recall hearing about someone getting got for piracy UNLESS they had other charges attached (usually it's the uploading part they're getting slammed for)

I remember getting a letter from the ISP that said like
    >dude, we've been bothered about you pirating like, a dozen times
    >have you not been getting our other letters on the issue?
    >if it happens again, we'll have to suspend service. That was about the extent of it. I don't think you really get into trouble for piracy unless you're actively uploading and sharing, and even then it has to be of note.

Fun fact:They'll never turn off your service. You paying them is worth more than actually having to deal with shutting off your service. What they'll do is just hand over your info to the company wanting to press charges (And those companies don't want to risk losing a pure piracy case unless you're also seeding [lmao])

The courts stopped allowing corporations to sue people for pirating one song or movie so there's really nothing they can do. Media corporations literally seed their own products with malware just to report you to your ISP

        >Media corporations literally seed their own products with malware just to report you to your ISP
        This is no joke.
I pirated one album once and had a letter from the ISP and I am in UK and have been pirtaing for 20 years, its only this 1 time I have ever had any sort of communication about it.

        vidya devs do similar.

Ah man, I didn't newline at the end of that last quote. How embarassing

Yeah, the fact that they didn't do anything after how many times I was reported makes me doubt they'd actually follow-through with anything, both for the ISP and the company making complaints. If they did, they would've done it the alleged multitude of other times before. I still played it safe afterwards, but just because it didn't really cost anything to do so.

There was a kid in my junior high whose parents were sued by the RIAA for using napster. It was like a lot of money. Whatever happened they ended up losing their house.

My friend also pirated porn and got a frivolous lawsuit from an adult entertainment company and the idiot fricking paid $2500 out of pocket and outside or arbitration because he was scared he'd get outed in public for his troony porn.

He created ways to pirate games.
That's the entire crux of the argument, no one gets convicted for JUST piracy. Never. There have been a few token instances of arrests, but the charges are dropped 100% of the time because it's just incredibly bad optics for the company, and not a guaranteed case (thanks bleem) so a company risking losing that case and piracy being made legal would fricking obliterate the industry. They play it safe.

Been pirating all my life. Never once got contacted by my ISP, big companies, lawyers, or anything.
Then again all I do is download torrents of the very occasional video game (and will continue to do so until companies stop being lazy and start providing substantial demos). And Photoshop, but everyone and their mother pirates Adobe shit so I don't think anyone cares.

Some general questions about how it worked. He explained peer2peer, file sharing and was asked pirating was a right thing. Then they asked him to just 10 finger type random shit so they could film it and filmed him clicking songs on WinMIX.

    >start providing substantial demos

when i was younger I would buy a game at a store, then return it. Change stores so they wouldn't remember me. If it was short game, i'd try to beat it before returning. Stores should give you a week to try it out or sell demos. They probably dont have demos anymore because they see no reason to

      Anonymous

People who pirate don't buy games.
Providing a demo to appease them does nothing.
However, providing a demo might cause a potential buyer to not buy your game because the game is actually total dogshit.
Companies probably see providing demos as a total negative.

I felt a primal fear when the game skipped the intro you're used to seeing and shifted to a blue, red or black screen and plays a buzzing sound with small font saying something like, "unusual hardware has been detected"
"please call 1-888 etc. with product information" and "Piracy is a crime" and then you hit reset and it happens again and then you blow the cart and it's fine now
