Has online games been forever ruined by the availability of chat software like discord?
Every MMO is just people talking to their friends on discord and ignoring everyone else in the world. It is impossible to create an engaging experience with players because players will no longer engage with eachother.
Even in the early days people used Skype, Teamspeak, Ventrilo, Xfire, even MSN to chat.
I don't think thats true. People always used in game chat. Especially because people didnt have dual monitors or anything to use both.
It's definitely true zoom zoom. I was very active during the Korean MMO boom towards the end of the 2000s, and voice chat was widely used. But the difference here is, unlike Discord which by and large has a good degree of quality of service, Skype had actual dogshit quality, Xfire wasn't that much better (but was GOAT'd for chat), and the other options were more niche and less widespread. So you didn't use it all the time. And public forums were still a thing, which while they did have clique bullshit it was a lot less than what happens with Discord and more readily visible. It was a really good balance of in game chat, forums, and voice chat back then. Discord is too good for voice chat and because of that people often retreat into the worst aspect of it which is the pseudo chatroom bullshit and ignore in game chat too much. The loss of the public forum saddens me greatly.
I guess I was just never invited.
God I miss xfire
yes but the socializing wasn't centered so heavily on those platforms as it is now with Discord
But they still socialized in-game with other people
I don't socialize in-game as much because I don't want to risk getting banned because of some thin skinned normalgay or schizo troon spam reporting me.
Discord is great in that regard, I just communicate with friends there and we don't risk getting our money stolen.
Thirdies and poors weren't the majority of internet users prior to 2013, insulated chat is now a necessity in order for it to be usable, nothing good comes out of public voip any more.
>another thread about discord
It's ruined for real? Good. Frick failed normalgays and frick female protagonist.
there were tons of chatting programs before discord

>isn't in the /misc/ raid discord
ngmi
it's annoying playing games like dayz and all the homosexual duos you see are obviously just on discord
i dont really care much about the platform other than the obvious reasons, i hate that it seems to have replaced forums and normal websites, i don't want to join your homosexual discord to download a mod or read a guide
I don't feel like getting banned from the game. Developers love banning people for dumb shit. Discord is fine and everything is okay.
90% of the people who believe this are console kiddies who grew into pc users.
People on consoles tend to talk more in game.
>Has online games been forever ruined by the availability of chat software like discord?
Does it matter? It's not going away, and it's not like this shit didn't exist in a smaller vacuum with Skype and Teamspeak.
MMO is
>He has such a low iq that he plays MMOs
Shit posts equal shit taste every single time
>hates video games but comes to Ganker
A perfect pair
>durr you don't like paying monthly to grind numbers with gameplay that prioritizes time investment over any actual skill to keep you in a shitty addiction loop? you must hate video games!
i guarantee i played ten times more games for the first time last year than you did
i fricking love vidya
troony thread
It doesn't bother me that much but what does bother me is how publishers and devs will use discord instead of official channels for their fricking announcements or tech support.
Have a problem with a game? Go to our OFFICIAL Discord and contact @dickshit#244, our unpaid and unaffiliated staff member who will just list you off the most common solutions instead of listening to your problems. You stupid idiot, I fricking wrote what my issues were and you just linked me to a post with the most frequent fixes that I already had tried.
Or how I need to be in their stupid discord to get news about the game. Great lemme add yet another discord to the pile of muted discords that I will never take part in, very useful.
yes but also games are now designed in ways where they don't want players communicating with each other since they might talk about other games
>say something stupid on gamechat
>you're banned
>say something stupid on a discord server with friends
>everyone laughs
why do forum mods get so mad for "necroing" threads?
The same reason people here used to tell you to do a flip off a bridge if you did it to threads on page ten: they stopped being active for a reason, so just make a new thread not full of years-old information.
If they were, they fricking deserved it. Online games spent decades having no or awful voice chat. They let shit like ventrillo, teamspeak and later skype pick up their own slack. Even now, devs could add shit as good as discord to their games but they don't. So frick 'em.

what a terrible post to end the thread on
I hate the effect Discord had in essentially replacing communities and forums. Indie developers no longer rely on Steam forums or pay a little out of pocket to host their own forums, instead they make Discord servers full of autists and casuals.
Plus the fact that it actively harvests data because it doesn't turn a profit on its own. Investors have been some of the most damaging groups of people to the net by keeping afloat shady, shitty venues like Facebook and Twitter, among which include governments that want the data.
Why do you hate it? It’s essentially the same thing
Most forums are a far better archive of information and don't require making an account to access them. I rarely run into technical difficulties these days but it's still nice to see a forum from many years ago and information that's useful for vidya just because the owner pays like 100-200$ every month to maintain it. It might have a few posts per day, it might have a few dozen posts per day, it might even be an alive one like GameFAQs or maybe Something Awful, or it might just be a piece of history with almost zero activity like a Half-Life forum I've seen, but it's a lot nicer overall.
Meanwhile I have to make an account on Discord and there's barely anything, most people use the server as a social space for things unrelated to the game, the search function is shoddy and makes it difficult to actually search for anything in-depth. Sometimes you might be required to link your phone number (which is essentially the closest these sites will get to asking for an ID, and it's probably sold to third party entities too) and I've seen that happen on an indie game server because they ran into spambots. They can't actually do anything about the spambots, only the required conditions to be allowed to post and that's essentially only what Discord lets them get away with. I find Discord servers to have more drama than normal and become circlejerks even faster, which wasn't quite the unheard-of thing for forums but it seems like a lot more of these are dramatic than forums were, one server I checked had drama every few months. It's really bad when there's Discord-only mods.
Plus I generally dislike the modern internet's insistence on constant stimulus, to never take a break from the internet, to constantly consume trivial information over and over. Forums are slow-paced and don't really have that problem, but instant-transmission "conversation" sites like Twitter and Discord do, and it probably significantly affected a whole generation of online teens.
>only uses Ganker to shitpost and doesn't talk about video games
>shits on any actual discussion about video games
>gets upset when people go somewhere to talk about video games
This tbh, this place has become an irradiated shithole where vidya discussion is far inbetween
Not really. It was the removal of community servers from most online games that ruined the experience.
Discord sistas…it is SO freakin ovah
>play MMO with /vm/
>all communication is in-game or through the thread
feels fricking great, man
IRC and Teamspeak were a thing for a long, long time, Discord is just the evolution and combination of these things into a single and much more user-friendly package. Even if Discord had never happened, and we were still on IRC for some god-awful reason, there'd still be trannies flooding it. The issue isn't Discord, Discord is just where they congregate.
Just like Ganker contains all of our homosexualry for the most part, if it died, we'd all just go shitpost everywhere else.
I was thinking about this, and I'm pretty sure the answer is console games with voice chat.
PC seems to appeal to the type of people that need online friends, so they're too scared to join in a game's chat with people they didn't filter. Basically, the more casual your audience the more you're probably going to find people being socialable on the game. MMO chat is absolutely dead.
Too many instanced zones where even world chat is only in those instances have done worse than Discord.
