theyre no different than a game including challenges/trials/collectables. they can be a little fun sometimes.

A game including those things is a personal challenge to have fun with

Achievements are an addition on top of that solely so you can show them off to your friends even though literally nobody cares about your achievements and nobody will ever click on your profile and browse what achievements you have

        >A game including those things is a personal challenge to have fun with
thats what im saying, why cant you just view achievements as the same thing? If project zomboid had 100 achievements to collect, the game would be alot less boring. Id have goals to accomplish beyond collecting cans of beans.

There is nothing stopping you from setting your own achievements since achievements add literally nothing to the game except for arbitrary checkpoints

Do you really need a pat on the head for collecting 500 mushrooms?

you still dont get it amigo. I wouldnt be doing it for a pat on the head, Im just playing the video game, im doing it because its something to do, an objective. Im working toward 'finishing' the game

I honestly can't remember the last time I finished a game. It's been over 10 years

              >Im working toward 'finishing' the game
I do the same anon, though I only care about PSN trophies and only care about platting a game, and only go out my way to plat a game I will never play again.
Though xbox gamer score used to reward you with shit like % of purchases and even a free xbone at one point, and PSN trophies now rank up your PSN stars program shit that you can use to get % back from payments, get free missions that give you coins and when you get enough trade them in for games or cash. I just use cash but I think I am up to like £25 free from PSN just within a year.

Also on a wildly related note I get 1GB internet in a few weeks, so they do a free 50 coins each month if you play the "free" PSN plus games, not worth the time, space or hassle to DL the game for like 50p discount, but after I hget that 1GB internet, its gonna take 10 secs to DL a 5GB game, so I can easily do that each month for the slow money back from PSN.
Again cant do this without earning a certain amount of trophies.

            >setting your own achievements
Some people cannot do that, limit their playstyle like make a certain build in an RPG and stick within limits, achievements can give them a goal to work towards.

WoW Classic got a huge boost that exists to this day from fans inventing iron man mode where you level characters but delete them on your first death.

There is nothing in the game that recognizes this way of playing the game and yet it is way more talked about than ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED, DOPAMINE HIT

Some people cannot think about creative ways to play like that.
Like that WoW mode, if they had an achievement that went for it that would incentivise and give people insight into ways/to play a game they would never have thought of.

Another example which I hate tbh, dishonored no powers achievement.
You literally gimp yourself but in D1 and D2 there is the flesh and steel cheevo which encourages people to play in that way.
I have not even done D2 flesh and steel, last cheevo I need as I hate having no powers in dishonored, but I did it in D1 just to get all trophies.

Maybe, maybe not. Go play WoW Classic now, literally everybody is doing ironman. No "incentive" other than community.

Yeah but that would have started with a person who came up with the idea, a group catching on and it spreading. This happens in lots of games. Teabagging is a thing because of a same scenario, one guy or group did it then it picked off an is now a thing of gaming etiquette.

Devs can set up unconventional rule sets in games that people didn't think of and have them as achievements so they are goals to set for players.
What you are saying there could be the exact same scenario, one person thought or iron man mode, or a dev adding it as an achievement and then the rule set takes off.

No dev has come close to fanmade trends by adding achievements

                Anonymous

Probably never will either because fan made challenges are a consensus made by a large community where an achievement is a challenge made by a small insular community, i.e the dev team, so they look at the game so differently than a community could.
Still doesn't take away the fact that some people are unable to come up with mandatory challenge rule sets themselves and achievements made by the devs can give the player inspiration to think outside of their comfort zone.

Personally I have a love/hate relationship with achievements (just trophies from PSN for me) on one hand they help me focus on one playstyle.
Example: hogwarts legacy has 4 trophies, 1 for each house, CP2077 has 4 trophies for each ending or elden ring the same. While I could save scum and do them all in one go, I prefer that the trophies give me incentives to play differently on my subsequent playthrough.
Like hogwarts legacy my 1st run I was hufflepuff doing all the animal stuff and never used the evil powers, second run I will be slytherin using only evil powers and will kill animals too.
CP2077 has a trophy for using melee weapons, which will help incentivise my next build.
So I love the type of incentivised achievements.

The hate comes from the gindy aspect of trophies, where you have to do obscure, unordinary or dumb shit to go out your way for, all anti fun playthroughs.

Like I bought anthem yesterday, super cheap on sale on PSN £2.50 for deluxe edition and I checked the trophies, there is like a mega amount of grindy shit, have to loot and collect everything. Im fine because I am autismo but its not gonna be fun run when I play it.

GoW if I want the plat I need to speed run in under 4 hours, playing on easy then do the challenge modes. All anti fun shit.

Fortunately I am not too autismo that I will force myself to do them but I do look at trophies as a sort of thing I will do in the future or if I never play the game again because I have completion autismo.

The ting is since these challenges happen in game you can tie them to in game unlocks like costumes.

Can't do that with achievements. Now of course you can have ingame challenges AND tie them to an achievement, but I think having achievements without ingame challenges is also kinda useless.

Always figured I could grind this one out if I set aside a few hours. It's such a short level that by just going crazy with grenades you can make it pretty far, but I just never did it.

    Yes. Steam cards.

Fucking challenge modes, I hate them.
    Example, mercenaries in RE
    Trial challenges in GoW games
Challenge modes in bioshock, though I actually like CitC in infinite as it got you to be able to use all the weapons and powers in a fun way.

    >I could not care less about anything else
This implies that you could care less about acheebuses which in turn implies that you care about cheebuses to some degree.
