I played Femshep first but as a soldier so I got some of that too. Ashley is totally gameplay wise for the entire trilogy if you do that though, as Garrus and Wrex can handle everything in 1 and Kaidan is massively more useful in 3. You're better off pirating the original games because the remasters look worse and introduced more bugs; the only thing the latter has over the former is including all DLCs so as I said, pirate a repack of the originals so you get all DLCs and you'll have the ultimate experience
