>he thinks there's still money to be made in indie games
lmao, I feel poor for guys who are still working on their games, I sure as frick am glad I managed to get mine out by ~2016 while it was still viable to make money with games
>he thinks there's still money to be made in indie games
lmao, I feel poor for guys who are still working on their games, I sure as frick am glad I managed to get mine out by ~2016 while it was still viable to make money with games
it's still perfectly viable if you make a good game instead of a shitty game
fpbp, op's game wouldn't stand a chance today
lol just world fallacy was debunked centuries ago, there's tons of good games that failed financially even when there was less competition
to be fair the enormous majority of those excess steam games are instantly obvious garbage
it's not like there are a thousands of games at the quality of FTL or the Spelunky remake or other champions of 2013 but not selling
But there are probably dozens which is enough to make it a nightmare
They don't have to be good as long as they flood the communication channels like storefronts or social media. Stuff like Fez or Super Meat Boy would've never gotten the attention they did in their time, today, because they'd be instantly buried in a sea of (other) garbage.
They still don't have to be good, look at undertale, made it into smash.
But Undertale WAS released very early on in indie terms and relied on that for its fame, Deltarune which can ride UT's coattails is still having trouble getting traction today, if UT was released today it would equally be buried instantly
>2016
>early
Only reason he made it big was the autistic homestuck fanbase.
2015 is early and it had 2013 demo momentum and yes the Homestuck fandom as well, but the competition was much smaller compared to today, not just in the indie space but 2012-2017 was that terrible gen 8 drought with 0 notable games in general.
The gaming market is super saturated. There are more good games than there is time to play them. Don't get me wrong, you should still make your game if you want to make it, just note that game making is a hobby meant to be done on nights and weekends, not a reliable way to make money. Saying "I am going to make a video game and sell it for enough money to live off of" is akin to saying "I am going to become an actor and use that money to live off of." Like yes, maybe you'll be the one in a million that hits it big, but statistically, you won't.
Now change gaming to music, or paint, or sculpture.
Incredible how everything bad on the internet can be traced back to 2014, including what happened on this site
How about you try making a good game for once instead of a garbage le retro meme?
>OP is proud he dodged a skill check
Congratulations I guess.
Anybody going into indie development for the money is a fricking moron.
Why else do it lol, the time investment for what you get with the final product makes it a silly as a hobby, you'd be much better off just focusing your time in one of the fields like art music programming or at least something physical like woodcarving where you have something to show off
Videogames is an amalgamation of all of that, 3D modelling, painting, music, programming.
Yeah but no musician plays the entire orchestra worth of instruments as a hobby and then layers his own work over each other to create orchestra music as solo musician, same with games, why waste time being kinda bad at everything instead of being really good at one of those things
>no musicians
You seem to think learning music changes depending on the instrument.
No, but learning instruments changes depending on the instrument
You don't need to learn a single instrument to write music.
Yes, but you do need to learn art and writing and music and programming and game design to make games, so the instrument analogy is what's useful to this case i.e. learning just an individual skill instead of trying to tackle what's usually a team effort, all on your own.
Not really, instruments are derivative, once you learn music all you need to do is pick up an instrument and get used to it. You can't go from programming to music.
There's still a muscle memory learning period for each individual instrument and an orchestra can have dozens different ones, meanwhile no one is expecting you to master art or music or writing etc to make games but the learning period time is comparable since there's fewer of them total. Either way most people stick to just one instrument/field instead of trying to do everything alone.
So, how is it bad to hone your skills focusing on videogames? A musician focusing on making videogame music is still making music, same as painters and 3D modellers, even programming can translate easily to a normal job.
It's bad because it's not relevant, everyone will want to hire the guy who spent five years making music instead of the guy who spent one year making music one year drawing art one year programming one year writing etc.
Who is going to tell them you didn't spend those 5 years learning music? You'd be working on your game, You'd have something to show.
>Who is going to tell them you didn't spend those 5 years learning music?
The quality of your portfolio compared to the other guy
I honestly can't think of anything else than calling you a moron, you are a complete moron.
Because I blew the frick out of your argument?
Sure thing anon, congrats
>Why else do it
for fun, homosexual
I don't think it's wrong to treat it as a business venture because you enjoy exploiting areas of opportunity, but since the latest trend is already by the time people have defined that the trend is happening its not even worthwhile to start a business as an indie dev so "for fun"is really the only real reason.
It's the same as people who do art for the money but then complain that AI is stealing their jobs.
>AI art
>stealing anyone's anything
Communities propping up hack artists is more dangerous to Art as a whole than AI.
Make your game 3D with original assets, don’t make it retro 80s vaporwave puke, give it a fun combat system, You now have a one of a kind indie game that no one else on the market can compete with, you are welcome
I see a lot of unique games in the new release section on steam and they have no traction

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1067220/RoboCo/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/347800/Ghost_Song/
>Omega Mouse
Looks like dogshit
>RoboCo
Robot construction game. Where you use blocks. It's not like there aren't a billion of those floating around like RoboCraft and Gear Up.
>Ghost Song
It has quite a lot of traction actually.
Wow
>shit isometric game
>shit cart builder/engineer sim that there’s 2000 of
>wow pixel shit, that already got more traction than it deserves
I would rather neck myself than play any of these,
The mouse game has trouble communicating what it is, also the art style is not very appealing.
The other is a metroid dread clone, Metroid relies a lot on aesthetics, this game although it looks interesting, the art style can't carry the entire game.
Until undies make a good character action game I will consider them as less than garbage.
Anon, are you telling me you aren't excited for Horse Tales Emerald Valley Ranch?
Name one that’s not a survival game, unity asset flip, or pixel shit. All the ones of note I can think of picked up traction. Like those nudoom clones.
No VNs either
90% of those games are RPGmaker slop and unity asset flips though
t. Has spent 100s of hours trawling steams shitpile for good vidya
thats a lot of visual novels
What was your game?
Now compare it with the user count.
We've gone from indies begging to get into steam because that's the only way to get visibility to indies begging to get with one of the few niche indie publishers with a built-in fanbase because that's the only way to get visibility.
Yes
Indie games that find a publisher have a step up on the competition. If you think you can self-publish you better be good at shilling Reddit for sales.
as usual the 20/80 rule rules
