Andrew Ryan. Billionaire, playboy, not a philanthropist because he believed the altruism was the enemy of society. Hated the idea of having to help his fellow man in any way and that everyone should pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Like he did when he was lucky enough to find oil on his land that instantly turned him into a billionaire. Hated the governments of the world interfering with his personal dealings so he commissioned Rapture to be built under the sea. Where he could escape the governments and the churches trying to take his shit and he could invite all of the business leaders and captains of industries and arts down into his underwater magic city where there would be no rules or regulations from stopping them from doing whatever the frick they wanted.

...completely disregarding that it's impossible to have a society made exclusively of bosses and that eventually someone is going to get stuck taking out the trash and scrubbing the toilets or fixing the pipes that keeps everyone from drowning in the literal bubble that they live in.

This is what Bioshock 2 was all about, the labor force that built and maintained Rapture and was forced to live in slums because they were never allowed to leave the city.
Ken Levine hated the sequel because it suggested his israeli hero was actually a monster from the get go and all his ideals were self-serving delusions.
The second someone seriously challenged Ryan for ideological control over the population of Rapture, Lamb, he had her disappeared showing he was also a hypocrite by nature.

Huh? Ken Levine doesn't like Libertarianism either...Bioshock 1 was pretty clear in slamming on that. He was surprised that people actually admired Ryan.

Thinking it was about lolberts is missing the point. In interviews Levine talks about how Ryan felt he needed to escape the surface world because as a russian-jew, he felt his family was persecuted by the soviet state and wanted to avoid ever being victimized by goy authority ever again. Same with Dr. Tenenbaum having lived through concentration camps before making the little sisters.
Reminder that Ryan is not the villain of Bioshock, he is at best treated as a misguided idealist. BioShock 2 suggests he may have been much worse than this.

You know what's better than being right about everything? Being aware that you're wrong about something. Ryan thought he was right about everything right up until he wasn't and the whole city fell apart because of it.

The thing is he was inches away from being self-aware. But he just could not help himself and went on an autistic rant about blaming Atlas for everything as if there weren't already problems before he showed up.

      >Could I have made mistakes? One does not build cities if one is guided by doubt. But can one govern in absolute certainty? I know that my beliefs have elevated me, just as I know that the things I have rejected would have destroyed me. But the city... it is collapsing before my... have I become so convinced by my own beliefs that I have stopped seeing the truth? Perhaps. But Atlas is out there, and he aims to destroy me, and destroy my city. To question is to surrender. I will not question.

Atlas is legit a bigger scum bag. He may have doubled down but Ryan was right about Fontaine/Ryan

Oh I'm not advocating for Fontaine/ Atlas at all. If you put a man who blatantly does not care about your well being and is honest about that. And put him next to a man who pretends to care just to weaponize your empathy then I would say the 2nd guy is far worse. But Fontaine was only able to do that because he was able to take advantage of the glaring blind spots that were already in Rapture long before he ever arrived. Like how he turned Neptune's Bounty against Andrew Ryan by just relating to the workers a little bit. Or how he turned Olympus Heights against Ryan by giving the poor a place to live. Granted Fontaine only did those things for self reasons. He needed a money laundering location and a training camp of he destitute he could string out on drugs. But a slight bit of forward thinking from Ryan could've removed those options from Fontain altogether. But Ryan just doesn't care about people. Maybe he should've bought an island so he could live by himself.
