Hell setting

How would you make the worst quality of life setting? A kind of dystopia where you would rather eat a bullet than be in it. Post-apocalyptic or under a horrible regime? Horrors of eldrich origin or man made horrors? What’s it gotta have what what’s is gotta have not?

The worst quality of life setting wouldn't really be a setting so much as some kind of infinite torture pit. Did you need a whole thread for this fart bubble of an idea? Perhaps you could define it further in some sense instead of simply demanding ideas from others

Many war games and RPGs have a sort of “torture porn” to it, that even some video games have adopted it like forever war (https://youtu.be/dkltcpMzQYU?si=A0STBnaRKj4leF7b) and the whole dark souls series and the Kenshi rpg. Suffering builds character, so an environment with maximum suffering must develop maximum character to those who play through it
These settings don’t have to have crunchy statistical gameplay either blades in the dark is a shithole but rules light

        >suffering builds character
        >everybody is an butthole to survive
But thanks for sharing the game, never heard before. Looks pretty good, it tickles my inner guardsman in the right places.

Only in your sci-fi fanfic setting is literally everyone is an butthole

I think traveller would maybe work for that as your terms determine your skills no matter how good or bad, but you’d have to gut the system to make it fit with the low tech-ish low life

I think there was the early mutant chronicles rpg or some post apocalypse system that had similar limb based health too like kenshi.

The Road is a good setting.

This is actually a great idea
All non-microscopic life, EXCEPT for humans, suddenly dies. Begin your game after the first few months or years. Non-perishables are priceless. Nothing can be grown. All dead carcasses are too rotted to scavenge. To eat, you must hunt and kill other human beings - people who are starving and terrified just like you.

I really can't think of a quicker way to create a setting where everyone has such a justifiable reason to be as absolutely inhumane to everyone else. Even if small tribes or communities form, what can they build? What can they grow? There is only the tenuous promise that they won't eat each other (yet). Holy frick what a bleak concept.

The Road is a good setting.

Is what I described above what The Road is like? If so I may finally give it a read. I just knew it was a bleak apocalypse.

Well, there’s still forests and shit in the road, but if it was a complete barren wasteland it would be practically impossible to make shit except for the inorganic. So basically the later mad max movies

Yeah theres still forests and shit but only because the dead dry husks of what once was havent burned down yet. The whole point of the book and film is that there really is no point going on- its well and truly over. The guy only carries on because of his son and even his son wants to die

It's set right at the time that the last preserved food is running out so people are becoming desperate cannibals. In the book, all the plants are dead.

The road is a super easy read very short and in vignette style. Your premise is close enough, its kept vague but my reading is a ~99% reduction in sunlight (ash) but the people are mostly unscathed eating up all the food quickly and descending into cannibalistic anarchy. I kinda wanna just talk about the book, the total dehumanisation it takes to survive in a hopeless situation. Roaming a pitch black, ashen, soaked, freezing world as a cannibalistic warlord bloodcult.

Well, there’s still forests and shit in the road, but if it was a complete barren wasteland it would be practically impossible to make shit except for the inorganic. So basically the later mad max movies

Longer term survival for anyone could only be maintained with a powersource and grow lights but the conditions of the world make it impossible to establish and maintain

Yeah theres still forests and shit but only because the dead dry husks of what once was havent burned down yet. The whole point of the book and film is that there really is no point going on- its well and truly over. The guy only carries on because of his son and even his son wants to die

Like the guy is only still there because he cant bring himself to shoot the kid when it comes down to it despite death being preferable

A higher power uses biologically engineered machines, but the genomec is controlled by complex viral messengers the can infect normal earth life. This causes people to mutate and evolve strange unknowable structures all over their body and become half alien machine. Every bit of life is infected and irreparably altered. Most humans retain their their personhood if they survive though and they have to find a way to survive and overcome both the alien force and the tragic loss of earth's beauty.

    Assholia

A prison colony + mgical dumping ground contained in a magically sealed off mountain range that was kind of harsh to start with. When the barriers keeping them in started to wear out a neighbouring nation tried to invade. The King of the buttholes declared that it wasn't an invasion, it was dinner time.

    >okay, let's all kill ourselves lmao

I would force people, under threat of job loss or arrest, to pretend that demons are human beings, that there is no difference between a human being and a demon, anyone who attempts to differentiate between demons and human beings becomes an enemy of the state, anyone who refuses to interact with the demons becomes an enemy of the state, etc. And they are still just regular demons, so despite them being only a small percent of Hell's population, they are responsible for the majority of all the violence anr destruction. They rape, torture, murder for fun, and when they don't use violence, they use insults. Can't imagine a worse hell than this hypothetical one. A hell in which you must pretend that the demons are good angels that dindu nuffin is truly horrific.

I indulge in fantasy to escape the worse quality of life setting (reality), not indulge in it. homosexuals who insist on making fantasy dark and depressing are mentally ill losers that are too stupid/poor to go to counselling and are just trying to make TTRPGs their therapy and I'm not interested in helping some dumbfrick neckbeard indulge his demons.
