they are adding lore in attempt to compete with ffxiv but it's too late for that. wow story and lore is already in place from years ago and ffxiv has been consistent for a decade.

This is the funniest part to me.
People have been shitting on WoW lore for ages, and they didn't care until someone came along and proved it could help make money.
My issues with WoW are more in the "I can't play one game for 20+ years" area though.
Would love to see Blizzard make a decent action MMO so that their dick suckers can at least keep that one alive for me, but modern Blizzard isn't capable of that for a multitude of reasons.

i like that all the WoW lore pre cata was kept to quest text and the foundational story from warcraft 3.
ff14's story and lore is the defacto best but i could never play through it all again just because of how many cutscenes there are. for first timers it's wonderful though.

What are you talking about? WoW lore back then happened in the books and comics, characters would just appear with zero explanation in the game itself.

Like Varian, he's in prison in vanilla, with an unfinished quest chain, then out of nowhere he's back as king in WotlK, how this happened is completely unexplained in game.

Alliance has always been more appealing to more normal people, outside of niche sectors populated by tryhards when alliance has a min-max advantage somewhere in endgame, but they traditionally didn't for most of the game's lifetime outside of vanilla and rated PvP in MoP.

It honestly should have. The expansion wasn't the best but the plot they shat out was a good break point for the "story"

      Anonymous

For me, it did. Especially when they started rewriting the light into just "void, but yellow" since the writers are hacks and think "but what if good thing was actually...le bad!?" is groundbreaking storytelling. Also the whole concept of void in general is just stupid and unnecessary. The whole thing started to stink of tumblrinas who wanted to get revenge on their dads for making them go to church on sundays and divorcing their mom for being a cheating bawd, manifesting fully in no other scene than that "I am my scars!" bullshit. That's the horseshit I'd expect in a shadow the hedgehog fanfiction; WoW's writing has never been super deep, but at least it was a fun fantasy setting with decent worldbuilding and firm ground rules. When they started rewriting that worldbuilding and those ground rules of what magic was and where it comes from, the whole thing fell apart.

What I heard was that their writing team never talks to each other, and are very coddled in their own little "creative spaces" where they're always allowed to write whatever stories they want without any critique or outside influence beyond simple copy-edits. Explains why it's such a schizophrenic mess forever stuck in an identity crisis of wish fulfillment daddy-issue power fantasies, and soap opera drama.

BFA was the expansion idea I wanted the most and every single thing that was 'It's gonna be a fricking N'zoth at the fricking end, isn't it' hurt

Especially when there were battlefronts for Silvermoon and South Barrens planned and then dropped because what they wanted to do with it wasn't what the players wanted and so they just dropped that idea and went "Okay, Old God homosexualry"

          >"Okay, Old God homosexualry"

            Anonymous

Oh, I am fine and I liked how they did some of the Old God stuff before and was fine with 'some' because of how fitting that Kul Tiras had a 'Lovecraft' theme to it and it's design that the culture has somewhat influenced by it.

The issue is that they came out and promised "The focus is gonna be Horde vs Alliance across the planet as the new leveling zones are essentially Horde and Alliance based with the other faction sneaking in and invading." and things went well with one of the raids being a city siege and it was all going well...

And then they shoved the Naga and fighting Queen Azshara and soon 'WE GOTTA BAND TOGETHER TO OVERCOME THE OLD GODS" was farting into a vuvuzela at a microphone to everyone that... It's just gonna be 'The Horde and Alliance make up, kick Sylvanas out and go kick Old god ass' and LITERALLY RIPPED OFF PANDARIA BUT WORSE.

I just wanted them to say 'frick it, we are only gonna focus on the Horde/ Alliance stuff and use it to build up these characters and factions and we can use this to update old zones for people to feel like they are doing War in Warcraft."

Then you set another expansion about dealing with N'zoth with the Naga and basically everything War Within has said that is promising (Aka, bringing in a zone from WOTL that was cut) and have the focus with that.

But nah, "WE GOTTA DO SHADOWLANDS FOR WHAT THE AFTERLIFE IS LIKE" and then frick up explaining everything and anything that was laid before them to work with for a really fricking moronic and lorebreaking bullshit and continue that with Dragonflight and War Within.

I legit just wanna take the setting for what I like and make it my own with the shit that Blizzard lost over the last decade. Add back the racism, add back the giant breasts, remove all the trannies and mock them to the fullest extent possible.

          >wasn't always like that.
No. The only animal bipeds there were in Warcraft before WoW were Tauren, Murlocs, and Kobolds, Pandaren technically too but it was only Chen.

Warcraft 3 had loads of animal bipeds though. Furbolgs, gnolls, tuskarr, etc were all in that game. But they were designed to look cool, not like gay furrybait.

It's a fantasy game about different races. And quite frankly racism and turmoil in fantasy is fun.
    >orcs are violent
    >tauren are peaceful
    >racial tensions between groups exist
    >etc.

When you become obsessed with pushing a message of equality everything turns bland. Everything has to be some uplifting Saturday morning cartoon with a lesson. Like take a look at Borderlands it's a game full of murderous psychopaths yet everyone on the planet is respectful of pronouns and politically correct. Not every character has to be a mouthpiece for the writer's personal beliefs. No let some people be buttholes. Let there be conflict.

It's called fricking WARcraft for a reason.

      >Its fricking Warcraft for a reason
The name never meant shit. 99% of RTS is about war and/or combat.

When you have a series going for over 25 years, where opposing factions have to REGULARLY team up to stop the greater evil, you cant just keep them fighting forever. The story has to progress at some point

        Anonymous

I get what you're saying about story progression. People complain about how the player character gets treated like a big deal now by faction leaders instead of just a random butthole like in vanilla. But honestly considering all the shit and accomplishments they've been doing for 20 years straight it kind of makes sense.

It does still seem silly when Horde basically commits a Night Elf genocide like with Teldressil then with that fresh in everyone's minds everyone goes back to being friends again.

          People always wanna moan
If NPCs treated you like a random butthole players would say "Me? Who has defeated gods, eldritch nightmares? Alien invasions? Why are they treating me like a random butthole and asking me to gather bear asses to make a soup"

No. It fricking does not. Being bound to a cringy low effort and completely nonsensical story is the worst thing that has ever happened to games.

100% true, however the game sucks now because the gameplay is boring, not the story. Who tf cared at any point about lore? I think the only time I cared was in WotLK, because Arthas and stuff.

    Old WoW
    >you and the bros you make along the way grow as mercenaries while exploring the world and occasionally getting into battles with players of the opposing faction

WoW since Cataclysm (and arguably a few parts of WotLK)
    >you are Diggernick69, hero of Azeroth who helped Galand'ar the Pious seal the gate to the Shadowstone Hell dimension
    >wait on the queue for the dungeon with 4 randos who will all hate each other by the end
    >world is a guided tour of quests designed to get you to max level in less than a week so you can start the boring dungeon grind

It always cracked me up seeing people say WoW had a story, and they'd always just point to the fact that quest givers called you champion after some point.
It was a brief period before even they wizened up, but still funny.

WoW should remove all the bad expansions and start again from there. And then restructure its levelling and progression so that you play through all the expansions on the way to max level, raids and all. That was one thing I liked about XIV.

      Anonymous

tbh the main issue with XIV doing that is that you're pretty much stuck in a singleplayer experience for several hours, on top of the game already restricting you from basic social features like forming a party unless you sub

        Anonymous

Actually the main issue was that I didn't give a single frick about XIV's world or lore and so I couldn't stand the slog at all. I would do this for WoW vanilla-WotLK thoughchance

I don't give a frick either about the lore either, but I was able to get through some of the XIV shit because I partied through some of it with a friend. The main quest is pretty fricking shit overall and I don't like that some people call it a "grind" because that implies that you're at least playing a video game and not walking around to watch more text scroll.

          >I didn't give a single frick about XIV's world or lore
Same. Seems to be a very unpopular opinion though. Most people can't get enough of it for some reason.

I think it's because XIV unironcially is not an MMO, it's a singleplayer game pretending to be one.

It really is. The only thing that changes is that the story gets a bit better, but if you hate the way that the main quest plays then you'll still hate every other xpac

            Anonymous

I wish XIV were singleplayer, maybe it could have non-shit gameplay if it were. But no, it's an MMO. The endgame is all group content, there's no reason to play once you've finished the story if you're not doing multiplayer shit.

              >The endgame is all group content, there's no reason to play once you've finished the story if you're not doing multiplayer shit.
and that's exactly why a metric frickton of people unsub and resub when a story update happens

                Anonymous

Yes that still doesn't make it not an MMO though. It just means themepark MMOs are thoroughly played out at this point, or that raiding was always a niche activity and that MMOs went down the wrong path by chasing raiders so heavily.

Shadowlands destroyed the setting, it can't be used to tell compelling stories anymore. Compounding that is the fact that Dragonflight is one of the worst written video games of all time. They did fire most of their narrative gays and writers, so maybe they will produce something halfway decent in the future, but I am still of the opinion that Shadowlands butchered the setting and it cannot be salvaged without a hard retcon.

Here's how WoW could've been better from day 1:
    >split undead and night elves into their own factions with appropriate variants
    >add ogres to horde and high elves to alliance
    >contested, open world PvP territories, like Warhammer: Age of Reckoning
    >story was okayish up until end of WotLK where the comic book BS started to creep in
    >if Arthas has to die, make the Crown of the Lich King literally an object which can be fought over in PvP, with the controlling faction having scourge support in the open PvP zones or something
The war should still be central to the game, even if it's able to benefit from the cosy PvE elements that dripped with soul. Warhammer did this really well and I'd be willing to bet would be kicking arse to this day if Mythic hadn't fumbled the golden egg they'd been tossed. With Warhammer as popular as it is I'd be surprised if something new didn't come along, if someone had the ambition.

what made vanilla WoW so great was that it lent itself to actual emergent gameplay. It DID have those contested open world PVP zones, they just emerged naturally rather than being intended as open world pvp zones by the game itself. Hillsbrad, Redridge, the Crossroads... open world PVP in vanilla WoW before battlegrounds were released was 10 times better than in any other MMO that had actual dedicated pvp zones like DAOC or Warhammer.

      >split undead and night elves into their own factions with appropriate variants
May as well just let allegiances be reputation based like they originally intended. Undead would naturally be distrusted everywhere but have advantages to make up for it. Elves could just be neutral with most factions.
