My 3DS is bugging me for an update. Is it safe to do?

Also I need to update my Luma. My Luma updater isn't working properly for some reason.

      Anonymous

Update all the firmware first then do the update. It's probably safe.

Then again, at this point why would you even enable your 3DS's wifi?

At this point any update is just designed to mess with pirates.

So I don't need to pop out my SD card to move content onto the console, I can just use FTP.

It's pretty slow but less hassle.

Could not be any further from the truth, the last several 3DS updates have done jack shit to CFW
And Nintendo doesn't have any means of detecting hacked consoles unless you go online and use cheats in multiplayer

DS Lite is about as big as a handheld should be

Problem with the Micro (besides not supporting GB and GBC games) is that the faceplate gimmick doesn't actually work very well. The plates are prone to breaking (especially at the tabs), the mechanism that holds them in place is also prone to breaking (which necessitates a lot of work to replace), and even while working the plates don't really do a good job of keeping dust out of the screen. I have one myself, but I hardly use it these days. I was using an AGS-101 that I had reshelled, but I finally got a custom GBA with an IPS screen. That's my new handheld of choice. I can't lie though, I have chinkshit handhelds that can do everything this can, plus numerous 3DS systems, DS Lites... etc. Still, there's something pleasing about playing on it. Also I like that it uses AA batteries.

I have a very specific question regarding it. I'd like to play Eye of the beholder and ultima underworld stygian abyss. Both of these are dos blobbers. I would really like to play both of these games using touch controls and since both of these games can be played entirely on a mouse they should transfer over to touch controls easy. Can this be done on the steam deck?

To follow up on this, the 3DS version is a meme and you should play the original DS one. On top of falling into the usual new perfect ending nonsense of Atlus's "New Girl Edition" re-releases they also make a bunch of unnecessary changes
        >EXP and gold earned from battle are both decresed
        >Prices of items in the shops are increased
        >The aforementioned changes are in place because there are two DLC items that double these, and they want you to pay up
        >Rest of DLC is either hot springs bullshit or minor interactions between various characters
        >A new bonus dungeon with its own currency (that disappears if you don't spend it on the trip its earned) and item shop offsets the higher gold prices somewhat
        >No dual audio
        >Character art is different and mostly inferior, particularly with the character Eruca who goes from a short-haired freedom fighter to a Disney princess, which is out of place even if she's actually a princess.

NTA, but what are the differences between the DS version and the Switch version? Any major differences between them? I’ve had my eye on TWEWY for a while so I’m interested

          Anonymous

im not him either but the dual screen combat is completely unique to twewy as well as being relevant to the themes of the game. there's also sort of a ludo aspect to it where as you get more accustomed to the weird controls and combat the protagonist also develops and progresses through his arc
if you want examples that are less pseud bullshit and more concrete, you only control one character in the switch version, and some attacks require using the microphone. in the switch version those attacks have a lot of overlap with other inputs which otherwise aren't an issue on DS

You need some sort of update to make it read properly.

Mine reads as "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian". It's also a little testy about getting picked up.

Truth be told this is mostly down to how I haven't converted my collection to TWiLight Menu++ (although I'd still need my old DS to play Guitar Hero: On Tour).

        N3DS xl has
        >worse screen
        -shit ppi and sprite warping
        >worse portability
        >bulky if you don't have manhands
(Not a problem for me but I prefer smaller handhelds cause of the DS lite)
        >feels cheap in the hands

          Anonymous

tbf the N3DS XL still has a PPI of 120, better than your average, for reference a 24 inch monitor at 1080p is about 90
as for spritie warping ive never noticed anything in particular and the size isnt a problem for me since im 6'7 and ive got massive gangly hands
as for cheap, it feels different from the standard, more glossy and smooth whilst the normal N3DS plastic felt a bit like the old biege CRT plastics i found, but i wouldnt say it really felt cheaper

            Anonymous

XL screen is noticeably worse than N3DS especially if you play standard DS games. N3DS has a ppi of 215 on a sub 5" screen.

              Anonymous

ive never really even thought of playing standard DS games on it to begin with if im honest, i do have Twilight and a couple games installed but ive never really bothered since the scaling even on the standard N3DS i had was always crap to begin with
i do accept it is worse but it was hardly ideal from the start, far better ways of playing og DS games than the 3DS, its just an acceptable alternative really

              Anonymous

You can easily augment effective PPI by holding the device closer or further away. Anyone complaining about PPI is moronic. I prefer the XL simply because it's bigger and the non-XL model gave me hand cramps.

          Anonymous

          >worse screen
It looks fine with 3DS games, for DS games you'll indeed need to rely on filters, some better than others (personally I think the sharpen filters look the best)
Playing DQ7 that made pick up a N3DS since that game has so much text and the font is kinda small for the default model.

          Anonymous

So essentially your opinion is that it's bigger and it's made of plastic (kinda like the non-XL)

            Anonymous

            >...and typed in the resolutions for the New 3DS (800 x 240 and 3.88") and you get 215ppi.

            ...and the New 3DS XL (800 x 240 and 4.88") and you get 171pp
That's almost a 50ppi difference. Very different for handheld games.

              Anonymous

              >800x240
First of all, you are using the parallax dimensions.. The actual resolution of the screen is 400x240.
Second, it's really not that big of a difference. They are both awful in terms of ppi, especially compared to any mobile device made in the last 10 years. And you can hold it further away if the pixels are too big for you. I have the opposite problem in that text is often hard to read unless I hold it closer.

                >just emulate the physical difference
Considering the actual resolution isn't different, yes, that is what you do. For the same reason that 1080p on a 5" phone and a 42" TV have different PPIs but are designed to be viewed at different distances for the same effective pixel density. Meanwhile a 4K 42" TV would still have worse PPI than the phone but it would have 4x more resolution

I don't know why everyone who buys a non-XL has to justify it by shitting on the XL. It's like small dick syndrome. Just say you like the smaller one, there's nothing wrong with the bigger one

The DS Lite has a 3.1" screen.
The New 3DS XL has a 4.8" screen.
Any way you look at it that is not something you can fix with software and visual tricks.
                >tries to justify it
I bought an XL and regret it because it feels worse than a handheld that was released half a decade before it.

                >The DS Lite has a 3.1" screen.
                >The New 3DS XL has a 4.8" screen.
I am talking about the N3DSXL vs N3DS. Dunno where the Lite came from, but it has a different aspect ratio so that alone will make the screen size substantially different. The N3DS was 3.88" which is an inch different than the XL. Again, if there were some resolution difference here, then ok, but complaining about PPI at such trivial differences just reeks of pedantic

And the DS Lite had a slick design. It was also light weight and very portable. The entire thing felt solid as a brick, too. The N3DS feels substantially cheaper in this regard. The edges are beveled so it doesn't line up smoothly the way the DSL clamped together. The exterior is much cheaper plastic, and the top display still wobbles on its hinge, solidifying the cheap toy feel. I honestly prefer the glossy exteriors of the XL because it feels a lot less cheap than matte plastic. Though it still has the same build quality issues.

Will my nip 3ds explode if i use EU charger for it?

      No
The charger is an AC adapter. The input (wall part) differs, but they all output (3DS part) the same voltage/amps

I think the 3D effect is pretty great on the N3DS. The eye tracking works quite well.

too bad those models put the SD card slot behind a screw for whatever reason

I never have to put much directly on the SD
The few times I access it, I just use the network feature

it is also the model where they introduced network SD card management, so unless you're replacing the card, the issue is null
