I especially dislike what they did with the animal characters where the monkey character clearly lost a lot of the attributes of a monkey and the hamster looks like a minions knock off.

The fact that the whole diversity score thing was revealed really makes it hard to not look at EVERY design and wonder if a change happened solely because of race or lack of points. Mei being thinner (waist wise) in her concept arts and even stickers but now OW ultimately avoiding showing that and pushing the fantasy of her being fat/chubby heavily comes off like a change made because the score board for her was too low and they fattened her up to pass later on. Similar to how chars like Soldier wasn't a homosexual but when the diversity tool was later introduced, he needed the extra points for being just a normal white dude, so they stamped the gay on him for those points.

Yeah they rushed the game and it shows, the previous plan was a new foundation for Overwatch to build on for years to come and they were taking their time to make it, then something shifted internally and the new plan became "wring as much money from the playerbase as possible at the expense of the IP and company reputation", so rushing "2" to get battle passes started as soon as possible was the next obvious step.
You can tell this from the fact 2 has literally fricking nothing going for it apart from the huge new terrible predatory monetization system, that's all the promo material and devs talk about, it's baffling really.

while I think some of the designs are objectively worse, I think the real problem is the art style of these new 2d renders. I can't really explain it well but it's kind of like they are trying too hard to make it look like the 3d models instead of just drawing it based on concept art or the artist putting their own take on the design (like how Junkrat's 2d art doesn't match up 1:1 with his 3d model). Of course the 2d art from the first game wasn't SOUL OVERLOAD either but at least they didn't look like they are from some very obscure shit WEG
Matches the softer look OW2 seems to be going for but I liked the style of the portraits in OW1 had that hard shading and shadows, thicker outlines.

OW was a normo-centric playerbase with only streamers keeping it alive, the esport scene they tried kickstarting died within months and the hype for the game died when new content got added at a snail pace, didn't help that for being a hero shooter they didn't keep to the theme of heroes and villains, more importantly they fumbled or completely shit up any attempts at story.
