What is it about a franchise about a bald autist murdering people that has such staying power?

Probably helps having the game set almost exclusively in places that the devs want to go on vacation at.

      >tfw the devs basically admitted that every level begins with it initial idea being “X would be a cool place for a mission”, and then they just build the targets and opportunities around that, with the way the level connects to the story being the last thing they come up with.

I wonder how common this is among level designers in other studios nowadays. Seems like nowadays, the story is put first in most games with everything else about a level being an afterthought.

I remember another game being made that way but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. They did all the levels first and then wrote the story second. They didn't even know the order they were going to have the levels when they made them. From what I understand it's a very unusual way of doing things.

Did they do it for that? The game I was thinking of is much older. I remember that much. Early or mid-2000s era.

        Wonder which dev decided
        >Yeah I really want to go on holiday to some shitty mudhole farmstead in Colorado

          Anonymous

Colorado was a victim of cut content/ deadlines.

Colorado was originally supposed to take place in a massive factory similar to the Dexter Industry levels from Absolution. They had to scrap that idea due to time constraints.

47 is unironically one of the best protagonists in gaming
he's one of the vidya protagonists with the most character development throughout his games yet nobody seems to point it out

      Anonymous

Mostly because his character development is very subtle and understated. Mainstream audiences usually can’t recognise character develop unless the the character makes some overwrought speech about how they’ve changed or if they do some anime-tier “cutting their hair” style stuff.

But yeah, it’s interesting to watch 47 become gradually more human as the games go on. He goes from being a blank slate killing machine with no personality to becoming the assassin equivalent of Columbo.

the trick was to die and be reborn as an always online time gated episodic release game
that and fighting to buy back their IP, i'd wager most of the old devs from other stealth games would love to make a new game but the rights were sold off to some megacorp who decided it wasn't profitable enough and chopped the studio up to make several much worse games

  16. 10 months ago
    Anonymous

I still don't understand why the new trilogy is always online except for leaderboards and enabling them to push out time sensitive challenges, it's really obnoxious when you're in a good rhythm in a mission and then that fricking disconnected window pops up
they are fricking fantastic games aside from that

I dont think either is superior but I do wish I could play the blood money's maps in WoA

          Anonymous

blood money is ideal for a quick session because of its smaller maps, the woa trilogy sadly doesn't have many of those (the only one that comes to mind is new york, actually and no, i'm not counting the shit that is hawke's bay)

I like that there is a distinction in between, it helps them not blend together like nsmb, like you can play ds and wii and still feel the same but not really with contracts and hitman 1

    >Get deep into a Freelancer campaign (3rd showdown)
    >correctly identify syndicate leader and gun them down when there are no guards around
    >one of the nearby civilians is actually an assassin and kills me immediately
    >Lose my Silverballer, Collector’s Tranq gun, AND my Leviathan Sniper Rifle

I love this mode, but it can be absolute bullshit on the 3rd and 4th syndicates.

if you see a civilian following a suspect around it's an assassin
you can confirm that by going into instinct and they will have the thicker guard outline

I know that. I’ve completed multiple campaigns already. The problem in this particular case was the assassin following the target was further away than they normally are, so I didn’t actually notice anything out of the ordinary until it was too late. It pissed me off because it was such a clean and stylish hit otherwise.

Hitman had a good studio behind it that didn't have a massive ego. Back when Absolution came out and got slammed by the fans they actually took the criticism and learned from it to make a true sequel to Blood Money.

In Hitman games released before Absolution you could carry as much shit as you wanted (multiple handguns etc.) but in Absolution you had an inventory more commonly found in shooter games such as Call of Duty etc. (one primary weapon, one secondary, one melee etc.)

        Anonymous

On the Hitman Forums in the pre-WoA days, a common criticism of Absolution was how 47 could pocket two-handed weapons. What they have in WoA is better, although it remains a nitpick of mine that 2 handed weapons are glued to 47’s back when holstered.

          Anonymous

the few melee weapons that you can't back holster at all are incredibly annoying to traverse levels with, so I'm more than fine with it

so does freelancer actually campaign fail you if the game crashes now? Because i tend to beat some missions via mass murder and sometimes my game crashes due to the bodies, as well as sometimes throwing a coin at specific spots.

      Anonymous

if the game crashes no, it's only if you alt-f4 specifically (at least from what I've tested)
you can still quit scum by using task manager to end the process too

        Anonymous

honestly i dont even care about alt+f4ing, i thought that kinda thing was lame anyways. I remember trying to do "kill em all" runs of Dubai and i'd consistently crash when throwing a coin underneath an open window in just the right way.
As long as I aint playing russian roulette with freelancer i'm fine.

      Anonymous

only alt+f4 triggers a failure now, like elusive targets. Genuine crashes (which they've fixed for the most part) and killing the game via task manager still work, so you can still cheat to your heart's content when targets get stuck in walls or bullshit their way out of getting poisoned because they heard your dart gun go off.

IO being willing to try different things, then ruthlessly abandon terrible ideas and focus on what works. This is both how we got Absolution after Blood Money, but then Hitman reboot trilogy after Absolution.
