It was indeed passable. GB/GBC had ports of almost every NES game, so compred to NES RPGs Pokemon looked better. It wasn't as good as the top like Zelda or Donkey Kong Land, but it was passable.
The art wasn't passable for GBA though.
In fact BW battle screen are 2D sprites on 3D plane. DS games are in in that weird, transitional between 2D and 3D and it's especially noticeable in Gen V where literally everything is just sprites on 3D background.

why do people sidestep this question? a few years ago there was sudden surge of interest and development of gen 2 romhacks, but save a couple of good projects almost everything that's come out doesn't actually look of feel like it fits whatsoever
if you're trying to circumvent the limitations of the GBC to such an extreme amount – not just on a technical level, but circumvent the aesthetics, mood, etc – save yourself the trouble and make another gen 3 hack

coral was promising up until recently. adopting the polished crystal engine seems to automatically mean all the stuff about later games that i don't want to see backported into gen 2 shows up – so, abilities, bloated level up movepools, etc. if that doesn't bother you it's something to continue to keep an eye on
fool's gold is a weird one that's "let's take the original dex but fuck with every single pokemon's typing, and then change their designs to fit the new type." conceptually fine, and messing with types leads to the game feeling sufficiently 'remixed' to enable quite a few fun moments, but some of the redesigns are quite awful looking so you might not be able to get past it.
and i think that's kind of been it, hasn't it? i have no regard for prism because i cannot get past the stupidity of adding new types. im barely interested in seeing fairy shoehorned into these games, im not going to bother to learn an entirely new type matchup system for your two new fanfic types
