I had a very strong suspicion it will end up this way after the shitshow that was Hardspace.

I though they fired that moronic pink haired b***h, I remember there being a lot of reports of her actually being abusive and fraudulent, but somehow, she managed to survive that shitshow, and this is inevitably the result.

A lot of the old HW people worked at blackbird, actually. Including the original lead artists, original sound designer, and the original composer. Blackbird was originally formed very specifically by the OG HW team, trying to revive the brand through israelite.
Unfortunately and unsurprisingly, they also had to start getting new people on, especially after Hardspace basically doubled their staff, and it was with Hardspace when it started to show that they are really losing their grip.

Then there was the 2023 purge. Probably ended up lying off most of the OG HW developers in the process, and only kept the cheaper junior staff.

Still: not that long ago, they made this:

If this does not scream at you "the old HW talent is still in here", then I don't know what to tell you.
We hoped that after the very... turbolent response to the direction Hardspace ended up taking, they'd learn their lesson, but it's now clear the result was the exact opposite.

            >old HW people
            HW1 or HW2?
Because HW2 was already a massive drop off in narrative quality, and HW3 sit pretty nicely on the expected curve in that regard.

              They were the same people.
              >Because HW2 was already a massive drop off in narrative quality
True, but a lot of blame for falls onto the publisher, because HW2 was notoriously a development hell and a product of a war between the team, and the publisher.

Also, let's not forget that in the meanwhile, they also made Deserts of Kharak. Which was pretty decent, honestly, the only thing that really hurt that game, was the decision to force the HW IP on it. DoK was very clearly intended to be a spiritual spin-off and not an actual HW title, and if they stuck to that original plan, it would be much, much better, but then Gearbox bought them out and... Even with it's incredibly clumsy shoehorned HW lore, and with that one very dumb plot twist it hard, DoK was absolutely miles, MILES above HW2 in terms of quality of the narrative.

nah, the HW IP was fine. Playing it did feel like going through the deserts as detailed in the HW1 manual.
One problem is that they thought of cool extra villains like the Khanseph only when it was time for DLC, when they could have been interesting extra threats in the campaign like the junkyard dog in HW1.
Another problem is no mod support.

              >And which one of them actually worked on the game?
              Rob Cunningham
              Paul Ruskay
              Martin Cirulis
Those are the ones I can 100% confirm that worked on HW1, and HW3. Cunnigham was the lead art director for HW1, HW2, DoK and now HW3. All environmental design, ship design etc... is his work, on all of these games. He has however, been "only" art director on HW1/2/DoK, while he is actually now also credited as lead director (general) on HW3.

Paul Ruskay is responsible for soundtrack and sound design on all of these games. He is both the man who put the Adagio for Strings in HW1, was the brain behind the unit chatter in HW1 and DoK, generally, everything sound-related his is baby.

And Martin Cirulis is one of the writers, as far as I remember he was one of the two people responsible for the utterly brilliant manual to HW1, together with Williams, who sadly but understandably, hasn't made a return.

I can't confirm any more names overlapping between HW1 and HW3, because for understandable reasons, I haven't bought HW3, and I haven't seen a full game credit list published anywhere, so it's only the project lead names I can verify.

Still, it's like 3 out of 5 most important names in the franchise still on.

To be fair, the art and sound are still really good in HW3 at least outside of the cutscenes.
The problem is gameplay and story are ass and the game needed at least one of these to be good to be somewhat acceptable, ideally gameplay.

And did anyone expect HW3 to excel in gameplay after they removed stuff like ballistic projectiles from the remakes?

I really don't understand why it's so hard to have ballistics when they could make it work in 1999.
                It adds so much nuance.

                >To be fair, the art and sound are still really good in HW3 at least outside of the cutscenes.
Yeah. My suspicion here is that they took Cunnigham, who absolutely was the guy responsible for Homeworld's most memorable feature (it's visuals), and figured: he must understand Homeworld better than anyone! and placed him in charge of the whole thing.

But it turns out, being insanely gifted at drawing beautiful space ships and painting gorgeous skyboxes does not mean you have equally good understanding of how to write a story, or how to design and ballance an RTS.

Didn't something similar happen with the Final Fantasy franchise? Where they took the lead art director and just made him in charge of the whole mainstay title because they though "his art is iconic, surely he knows what he's doing!" and it all ended up in a massive shitshow?

I don't follow FF franchise, but I vaguelly remember that kind of story flying around.

I don't want to shit on Cunnigham, because he has proven over and over and over that his talent at sci-fi design is unmatched, bu I'm starting to seriously suspect he was absolutely the wrong person to be given full director's role.

Seems reasonable. It really feels like they were lacking a good gameplay designer with how surface-level everything feels. Wouldn't surprise me at all if it was done by an artist.

                >And did anyone expect HW3 to excel in gameplay after they removed stuff like ballistic projectiles from the remakes?
That was absolutely not blackbirds fault. That is 100% purely Gearbox doing. The remakes are a very poor point of reference, because they were made entirely by a bunch of artists, who had zero actual programming or design experience, or tools, they were handed the HW2 engine (which did not support full balistic simulation), and told "recreate all the assets from HW1 in this engine.

If you want to take a look at Blackbirds actual technical talent (or lack of there-off), you have to look at DoK, because unlike HW remaster, DoK was actually a full proper game, developed by a full proper studio, not just 5 3D artists and one sound guy being handed completely wrong tools.

That's not how game dev works, the director doesnt write the narrative, they hire someone else to do it. We both know the type of person that was hired. I do blame him for the shitty cutscene aesthetics because he almost certainly had some form of oversight and didn't intervene.

                >That's not how game dev works, the director doesnt write the narrative, they hire someone else to do it.
The director is the one who decides who to hire, and he is the one who reads the script and says "yes, this is fine" or "no, you need to rework that". So it is still his responsibility.

                >We both know the type of person that was hired.
Yeah, the guy who wrote Cataclysim - you know, the only HW game that is considered by many to have better writing than OG HW1?

The lead writer credited by the game is still fricking Cirulis. Who both co-written HW1, and wrote the entirety of the Cataclysim expansion.

So whatever fricking went wrong there, it's not as clear-cut as not having a talented person on board.

There are 15 people credited with the narrative on HW3.
Its the same story with every big budget project in the west. They hire a female millennial writer who works under the main writer, they have political leanings and concerns that are frequently voiced, the lead writer doesnt want to look like a "bad" person so plays along with all the moronic suggestions till you end up with girl boss on an interracial lesbian adventure to fight fascism.

Of course, the guy in charge takes responsibility and I do blame him, not for being a shitty writer but for allowing shitty writers to touch the IP. They always hire underqualified female writers because they want gender balance at their studio then end up paying the price when the studio gets shut down.

Even if that's not whats going on here, that's probably why so many IP revivals are bad despite having some original devs. We just assume the old guys remember how things were made and can pass it on, when in reality they were trying to frick up what made the games good back then and lost in the push/pull against other old guys with better ideas

Having character portraits at all in Homeworld is a massive red flag. One of the more unique things about the series was it focusing on entire cultures and empires rather than individuals.

It's just like the nu-deus ex situation. Human revolution had a decent story, but people are not playing it for any amazingly innovative mechanics or systems. So the mankind divided's story needs to be as good, or better. It's the same here and this issue is broadly true for normies and virgins alike. The issue gets compounded when devs are streamlining for appeal, and as a result staples of the IP needs to excel.

Not all of them - again the lead names remained the same, but you are right that there was a massive lay-off in 2023, 43 people were fired, that is almost 2/3rds of the whole studio. So yes, it's very likely that a lot of the lesser-known but veteran Relic people were lost in that shitshow.

Holy shit, that is the woman they fricking fired for being literally violent and abusive piece of shit.

So they fired her from Blackbird, after the absolute SHITSHOW that followed Hardspace - only just re-hire her into Gearbox, and then give her even greater control over the company that tried to get rid of her because of her psychotic behavior and the fact people DESPISED her narrative ideas in Hardspace.
And instead of crediting her, they fricking put Cirulis's name over it.

            >Failing upwards isn't a myth
This isn't just a matter of falling upwards. This woman was facing multiple lawsuits by her colleagues by the end of Hardspace development.

That's fricked up if true, where's the record of her being a BBI employee before being hired at gearbox?

I was trying to find the damn record of the whole Hardspace development controversy, but it seems like it was quite carefully scrubbed, and I'm not great at working with stuff like wayback machine.

But I'm 100% confident that it is her. She was hired by Blackbird when they decided to listen to the fans and turn Hardspace (which was originally just a tech demo, made for a game jam and free to download) into a fully fledged game. Her job was to help figure out the narrative for what was never meant to have any story because again: Hardspace was a jam thing, made over like two weeks by like 4 people.

Unsurprisingly, the narrative they started to literally force into Hardspace was absolutely awful (and I mean it was FORCED, like, deliberately removing the option to skip cutscenes and dialogue level of forced), and people obviously blamed this woman.

A bit later, Blackbird suddenly announced that they are done with Hardspace (despite originally promising significantly more content), allegedly due to sales being bellow expectations, but almost immediately, internal correspondence was revealed that actually, the development was stopped because the team was essentially in full riot. Joyce was being accused of systematic harrassement and even violece against other employees.

Few weeks later, her name disappeared from both Blackbird's employee listing, and Hardspace credits.

We all thought that was the end of it. But no, this woman, who was being on the verge of being sued for workplace harrassment and hostility, was taken in by Gearbox and given a position from which she could no over-rule Blackbirds leads, and through that, effectively promoting her to narrative designer of HW3.

Holy shit Gearbox is such a fricking cartoony evil company, you can't even make up this shit.

            Those b***hes got laid off.

Hardspace was written by Jennifer Scheurle, not this chick.

            I stand corrected.

Fricking hell this industry is fricked up.

I don't know anything about that, but what I do find bizarre is that she's the (self-proclaimed) Head of Writing at Gearbox despite only handling side-content with the games she was involved in. Her time at Gearbox is also her first direct experience with professional game development.
I don't want to get too schizo though, and get even more overinvested - for now.

      It's a straight downgrade to both HW1 and HW2.
Ships pretty much lost the ability to move backward or sideway, so you can forget repositioning mid fight.
Every ships has a 10sec ability on a 15sec cooldown with next to no drawbacks so be ready to spam your keyboard shortcuts non-stop.
TTK is moronic fast, making big ships useless.
No sub-modules and even the tech tree got dumbed down, which is a feat.

the campaign would need to be several times longer in terms of in-game chronology (I don't know - at least a year) and gameplay time for the discovery of the Khar-Sajuuk to hold any meaningful impact.

This game has absolutely no vision behind it. It wasn't made because they just couldn't wait to improve and expand on the series. They just gathered up a team and told them to make the game, rolling the dice that enough people will buy it to make a profit.

And to think I used to believe DLCs were cool ~15 years ago.

        >I used to believe DLCs were cool
In my days, expansions were the shit, because they were essentially sequel-quality additions to the base game that made them like whole new experiences.
The love of money turned them into "downloadable content"

          Anonymous

The concept of “smaller, cheaper, but still meaningful content additions” isn’t a bad one. The problem is that it’s turned into content that feels blatantly hacked off the game to be sold a month or two later.

small, cheap and meaningful are oxymorons. You are paying for random shit that used to be free cheats and secret unlocks. The entire concept of microtransaction DLC is cancerous.

There isn't a way for ion cannon frigates to attack while strafing or moving whatsoever. They need to completely stop to a halt and stay put in place in order to fire their cannon. Same with every other "large" unit.

I'm not even American, but what we've been seeing over the last two decades is the progressive encroachment of third world countries into the various aspects of the internet. It used to be 90% USA, and it showed. That's where all the jank is coming from. And since most of the new population on the internet comes from the same place, they have no way of knowing this is happening. Only the minority of non-American internet "nerds" are in a position to see this. Because to an American it must look as if everyone suddenly started becoming moronic. And they're not moronic, they're just poor and have warped priorities (contrary to popular belief, poor people are the ones most obsessed with making money and sacrifice everything else over money).

That esports thing really hammered it home for me that yes 1990-2010 golden age was a different time. It really was a dev studio that wanted to make a good product and nobody was there to interrupt them. Now when you have the worst kind of career maxing sociopaths at the top dictating everything and only thinking about money you can't just leave the esports angle out to make a better product. You have to design with esports in mind because it is potentially lost money. And that applies to everything else. Broader appeal, cutting shit out to sell as dlc etc. You end up with so many constraints on the game that you really can't make anything good anymore. At least high budget.

    From the other thread:

The game has 3 game modes and the features you'd expect from an RTS:

Campaign, the most expected thing from a Homeworld game
    >Story is shit and forgettable
    MP game
    >The MP is undercooked, game wasn't designed nor reviewed or played at all
War Games, which is the PvE component
    >AI is ass, and since the MP wasn't developed there's also nothing to build upon
Modding and custom games for fun replayability
    >It has Denuvo and DLC roadmap so no custom lobbies

So what was the point of this then? every mark is missed, every component is lost

Nobody in videos speak of the actual gameplay, the tactics or the RTS'ing in it, because it's non existant

It's a no-game. It was not-developed. It wasn't thought out to be played at all. It's a cinematic experience of clicking things and watch them fly. You tap the build buttons like mad and spam spam spam shit and that's it.

No directional damage, no subsystems, no interchangeable techs, no capital ships working as "buildings", no map control mechanics, no pincer mechanics, not even interesting utilitary ships

it has NOTHING DEVELOPED. IT IS A NOTHING GAME. IT IS NOT A GAME. A GAME HAS RULES. THIS HAS NO RULES OF ENGAGEMENT. IT IS, BY DEFINITION, NOT EVEN AN RTS, OR A STRATEGY GAME, IT IS A NULL-GAME. A CULEXUS GAME. A VOID IN GAMEPLAY.

No way the Homeworld IP is anywhere near big enough to become a substantial risk mitigation factor. Someone must have given the suits one hell of a blowjob to make them greenlight HW. Or I guess Gearbox was just incredibly desperate and the devs made sure to diligently quadruple underline the hot new "the kids will love it" randomly-generated PvE mode.

You vastly underestimate how creatively bankrupt and risk-averse the industry currently is.
If they are willing to un-bury things like VtM:B and throw several studio at it, something like Homeworld who had already 3 games and a remaster is comparatively a very safe bet and ver easy to get validated proposal.

Because they cannot get their own IP greenlit. The only way is to parasitically attach to an existing IP and try and transform it like fanfiction into your own. We've been over this over and over with every example you've seen in the past 10 years. They literally, and I mean literal in the literal sense of the word, did this with that True Detective season. It was

It was hyped and delayed time and time again, came out, and it was super inspired yet bland as frick in actual gameplay, not very well thought out, since it was a copy of CoH but in an alt WW setting and such, but without understanding CoH mechanics and how do they work towards the gameplay experience. Yeah I love the units and animations of the game. Their designs are really inspired, love the Lowca and the Straznik

They fricked up hard when they also announced they wanted the "console audience" capping their gameplay, controls and scope hard to accomodate a shitty pad, but they at least were passionate in certain areas... others not so much, they never really thought about the Armor vs AT dynamics of CoH and why does it make sense to have early AT guns for cheap even before actual armor in the field. The game is a design mess, and it is much better than HW3 right now. If I had to play an MP game or a SP game right now would pick IH.
