Homeworld 3

Homeworld 3 releases next month. As a fan of the series, particularly Homworld 2, I am worried they'll frick it up or the game will not be interesting. What do you think?

Not sure if I want to play multiplayer, strategy games become so elitist.

More of a problem if it works like DoK where it sometimes prevents single player from working.

I really like HW1 and Cataclysm and I'm not a fan of the direction HW2 went in. I just want to care about my little space ships and not have them exist to be fodder for cool screenshots. There was a narrative reason to preserve individual ships in HW1 and they doubled down with a mechanical reason in Cataclysm. This seems like it's more macro oriented like HW2. Maybe it will be a good RTS, but it's not what I'm looking for from the series.

It's not bad bad, it's just a very boring story and more of a retread of the first game. It was just the "players does on a treck to find old legends" thing all over again. I feel like cataclysm made much more sense as a sequel with the first game being about pursuing old legends and cataclysm being about creating new legends.

I don't like how HW 2 retconned HW 1 regarding the hyperspace cores, turning them into super special ones from the Ancient Ones. It was enough for the exile's return to be prophesied, all the Progenitor stuff was just nonsense. It narrowed the game down from literally anything to a set story about yet another ancient race. I was gutted at the time and I'm not hopeful, but hopefully it'll still play well.

        >a continuation
        >a retcon
You realize they literally could've written them in sequence?
And remember that Cataclysm was a thing too.

Nowhere in the original is the hyperspace core special in any way, nor do the Bentusi mention it at all, so yeah, it is a retcon. Cataclysm is irrelevant afaik, but maybe they've acknowledged Somtaaw as a warrior clan now? Remaster never ever.

Loved the first HW. I was among the top players in multiplayer, competing in ladders and shit. Good times. I was also obsessed with the campaign... I tried to do runs where I went through extreme lengths to capture powerful enemy ships early on.

Never cared for all of the other sequels sadly.

I hope they retcon the majority of HW2. The story is just so fricking bad.

What's wrong with it? I played 2 first and loved it. When I tried 1 I couldn't stand the interface and controls, felt very dated and filtered me.

          I don't think HW2 retreads the 1st game's story, it's different.
In HW1 the goal is at end and our fleet pitstops to find a danger, a foe, a friend on the way. It's a classical story.
In HW2 the fleet doesn't know what it's looking for, it's almost a detective story with a series of clues. They go somewhere, find a macguffin which point to another location, go there, find something weird which points somewhere else so they follow the trail and fumble around.

I retract my detective story comparison. In these stories the clues accumulate and the detective assembles a solution with the pieces.
Not in HW2. It's a goose chase. The goal is always the next destination then that destination's "everything" is dropped in favor of the next one so no narrative weight can build up. It's an orientation race, who knows where the finish line is but follow the signposts and eventually there it is!

My flop sensors went haywire the moment they show the mothership in that horizontal configuration. I dunno, maybe it's a sign that they're messing with unbroken things

It's fascinating to listen to the developer interviews and realize most of the iconic visuals in the original homeworld were done for entirely practical reasons.

Still better than Relic but that's not saying much
If it's cool then that's it. They pushed the launch back a year so I don't think its gonna be fine. There's something they didn't liked, so they added the roguelike coop mode.

People are so jaded with the state of western game studios that even a certain homerun like this got fans sceptical. How tragic.

I don't think the series ever made a ton of money? I don't feel like researching that though but I'm confident it's one of those games that people who make games (and enjoy games) know that it's intrinsically good and something that should be carried forward, but isn't going to make money.

I don't know if there's a good term for what I'm getting at but it exists in the film making business; film makers and actors will do absolute dogshit awful movies they hate like Capeshit to get money so they can then do very good auteur films that have a message, or are a complex character study (or both), knowing that the auteur film will be studied and regarded highly by people that understand quality despite not having mass appeal.

As one such example in gaming, the Tribes series keeps getting brought out because it's just a really good video game / game concepts, but it never hits the mass appeal of a Call of Duty or whatever (and the one COD that tried to go hard on verticality and movement was hated by COD fans).

Home world 2 sucked. Deserts was good but only had two dimensions.
The gameplay has only ever been novel, what sets it out is the setting and story. If it's more like 2 than 1 or cataclysm then it's going to be bad, and I have no faith in writers these days

I liked the design of Kharak but found the gameplay just a bit stressful. Like in Comapy of Heroes where you have to control different points and you can't relax for a second. Same in Kharak where you're having to scramble to counter an enemy all the time. Homeworld I find a bit more relaxing as ships take more time to move to the battle and you can see what the enemy has in advance of them getting up in your shit.

The maps were very claustrophobic for a HW title, it lacked the kind of scale it should've had.

I always wonder how this happens. Like my guess is the devs have a little bubble of diehard (in this case) Homeworld fans that are following them and/or have an active community (forum or discord or website or all of those) that the devs participate in, and so the few dozen (or let's say at most 100 people) they're interacting with feels like a "community" but then they fail to understand you need to sell to hundreds of thousands of people in order to garner interest from big money.

Gameplay wise, it will surely be a competent RTS and DoK made great use of its skeletal unit roaster with versatile units.
Having followed the development a bit: i'm confident it'll play well at least. If anything

I slogged through the campaign and enjoyed it but I probably wouldn't bother again. I mainly play 3v3 skirmish with computers. At the time i loved the sleek minimal UI, and was annoyed at the remake for making it chunky and take up more of the screen.
