Welp. No surprise here, the people that can't connect to a story unless they see a character that **looks** like them failed at making an interesting sci-fi story about big spaceships.

Is the gameplay at least salvageable? I really enjoyed DoK's multiplayer with it's strip down unit selection and the faction asymmetry (not that it's an impressive design feat with only two factions, the DLC ones are too similar to the vanilla ones to really count.).

Just wondering if I should pick this up for 10€ in a year when the devs inevitably abandon it.

            >Is the gameplay at least salvageable?
With hard work and clear direction, sure. But that shit ain't happening. They would basically need to scrape the existing game and rebuild it from the ground up to not make it a glorified auto-battler. Unless maybe Gearbox thinks they can salvage this clusterfrick by just giving BBI the code from HW Remastered, which still isn't an optimal solution but still significantly better than what HW3 currently has.

I am being honest, it could be fixed. In theory. Just realistically it isn't going to be due to the amount of work involved. It would be cheaper for Gearbox to just beat the necessary content to fulfil the Year One out of BBI then cut support after that. We may not even see that given there is already precedent for companies just cancelling DLC and refunding the difference like what happened with Total War Pharaoh.

In contrast, in HW3, ships will stop firing, turn slowly, move, and when they encounter an enemy, stop, turn slowly towards them, then fire. It's completely atrocious.

Not only that, but the developers “addressed” this issue by saying that of course there is attack move in the game (assuming the same meaning as you). They just don’t even know how a homeworld game is supposed to play.

Honestly? It's because these writers are the most self-centered pieces of shit around. Everything has to reflect their appearance. It is impossible for them to write about anything that isn't "themself". It's also why you see so many movies that are just "the writer's barely disguised childhood trauma". The worst part is that they can't even present this shit in an appealing package since they're so focused on making sure they get seen.

Unironically demons. Or a mental illness, pandemic if you prefer your materialism. Human beings are becoming increasingly infantile, incapable of empathy, creativity and, consequently, creating art. In a couple of decades (and for some people today) the very concept of "art" as it as been understood throughout history will simply be inconceivable for people.

All modern games now cost hundreds of millions dollars. Publishers seek a way to cut costs and make the product as available for everyone as possible. And it should be ready after 2 years of development at max of course. And don't forget about all these current trends and target group analysts who tell developers what should they add at any last possible time: Captain Marvel is popular now. Make it look like Captain Marvel. And no, you can't make anything risky about sensitive topics and if you come with it again we will fire you

The end result is an unsalvageable mess of underpaid workers which in the most cases is a generic slop. Japan is not affected by this as much as North America because their industry is built a little bit different

It's not like Homeworld is so generic to warrant this kind of desperate marketing anyway. Even after all these years, the visuals, the gameplay, and the identity of the games are still one of a kind.

The west is mentally ill. At this point western writers are incapable of creating a story that stands on its own legs, or an universe that can exist in a moral vacuum - everything has to be a derivative of real life, or rather the abomination they perceive as what real life should be.

If I made a story today about a cruel empire ran by a dictator, I wouldn't be able to get it published unless I constantly inserted hamfisted messaging about why empires are le bad, and why the ones in power are self sabotaging clowns, just so the mentall ill western audience was extremely in the clear that I don't support imaginary regimes and it's all just troony kabuki satire.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion. Companies are getting rewarded for hiring people based on who or what they are, not what they can do. Instead of meritocracy where you hire the most capable people, you now hire people from marginalized groups to fulfill a quota, regardless of whether or not they're actually capable people. Of course you can sometimes hit gold and your diversity hire is actually a good addition to the company, but those are the exceptions.

overthinking, adverse to risk, easy access to money, schedule type of producing instead of project type, and high costs.
the industry has now plenty of experience on what constitute a success and what is not and suggestions became rules, rules dogma. "cool ideas" by designers became a strategy too vague, too risky for people who expects solid, reliable revenue incoming. A vg is a multi million dollar, multi years investment and there's really no one who is able to sustain losses. Putting so much money on the table and "trust the guy" became a losing strategy, look ME.Andromeda, look the last guardian.
Indie can produce new concepts, but the scope must be limited.
The decision to introduce personal drama, animated 3d cutscenes instead of the more simple, and more cheap, drawing style original to the series it's the manifestation of that, the devs got scared to not to have the marvel slop because the marvel slop sells. They choose a more expensive way to do the narration just on fears.

Video games are a business now. Businesses are run by boards and money, not people. Genuinely talented people are usually fricked up in some way, either they're contrarian, neurotic, mentally ill, or they know they're hot shit and therefore buttholes and do not fit into a safety-ism focused company culture that tries to work with averages. Therefore genuine visionaries and talent get pushed out, and so do people who have a spine and concrete ideas, then everything gets filtered through 20 rounds of focus testing and committee evaluations and you end up with inoffensive slop nobody talented would ever work on long-term without shooting up their workplace.

investors and corporate suits only want to extract maximum dollar
          quality is irrelevant
they just want to squeeze you for every penny they can, then short the company, cash it out as a loss from the govt in kickbacks and then do it again.

this isnt just a vidya thing. its happening in every industry.

          literally ESG and SPLC scores

in order to maximize investor money you have to have a high ESG score

to get high ESG and SPLC scores you have to hire x amount of black people, gay people, trans people etc etc who inevitably shit up your project because frick merit and utilizing tallent.

then you also have to include that shit in your media projects. by doing so you get mega investor funds. even if your project sells poorly, you can anticipate this on the front end and just gut it for gay shit and make much more money that way by hiring these morons and paying them so little that you don't dry up your investor funds and then sales of the game are just bonus.

not to mention all the money bbi copped from fig lmao

Ballistic projectile simulation is good. Ever since I played Supreme Commander which had that, most other RTS games seemed shit because I kept subconsciously noticing how "fake" projectiles are. Even Deserts of Kharak which I otherwise liked had blatant fake hitscan/scripted crap. It's like you see the AAVs firing and the shots are "guided" even though they're canonically not. It makes games feel fake. It's like in C&C Generals the tank shells are guided and the machine gun bullets aren't real they're just hitscan with a sprite of a bullet.

That's not what's wrong with Homeworld 3 is what I am saying.

Hey, what the frick? The mothership was the most recognisable thing about Homeworld. Why did they change it?
I assume I'm really late but I haven't paid any attention to Homeworld 3 before now and this is fricked up.

          Even the ships a troony

          Anonymous

Even if it's a replacement, they could have made it look similar. The mothership from 2 was a different ship to the one from 1 but they still kept the basic model.
If you're going to call your game Homeworld 3 then you should try to keep things looking like they did in the first two games. It's easier than coming up with new designs and it means nostalgiagays will be happy. It's like they're trying to frick up.

it was meant to be able to land, since at the start its being made underground, i guess they just settled on that long ago and couldn't change it

Because the lore of the series has deep philosophical and political undertones that they subconsciously wanted to trample and destroy. So they couldn't just make a bad game, they had to make it bad in a way that was the most insulting and hurtful to the fanbase. They literally spent hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more, in causing harm.

That being said they could also just be fricking idiots and make have lost whomever knew what the frick they were doing after Deserts of Kharak.

Realistically this is just the case of a comedy of errors. Gearbox acquired the HW license, agreed to let BBI make Deserts of Kharak an actual HW game instead of just an homage. Gearbox handles the Remasters of HW and lets BBI work on HW3 despite BBI basically imploding after DoK due to stupid decisions with their follow up game Shipbreakers and then another failure of a game. On paper it probably looked like a good idea at the time since technically BBI had handled the IP before, but of course no concern was given to whether the people that actually made DoK work or at least not a dumpster fire were still at BBI.

He's partially right but not for the reasons he thinks. 3 became some character-heavy focused slop about Imogen but the fault begins with Homeworld 2 making Karen Sjet some 'chosen one' bullshit.

The great thing about Homeworld 1 (and also Cataclysm) is that all the characters are faceless, just voices representing their ships, and it's about an entire people working together instead of Homeworld 2 bringing "Ooooohhhhh Bald Woman is the messiah of the galaxy only she can control the super duper OC ship that beats all other ships!"

I'm conflicted about it. I like the designs for the most parts: I dig that the new mothership looks like a manta ray and the higaran ships in general have a solid look. That being said the Incarnate ones just look like the Vaygr with an HD texture pack and appart from the raiders at the beginning (whose carrier is just a flat taidani anyway) you only fight them and it gets dull fast. The gameplay is grasping at something with terrain but it's underwhelming: Units feel more unresponsive and sluggish than in the remasters and it ends up being a capital ship game as always and cruisers aren't made for sneaking around behind small asteroids I also find myself fighting the controls more than in the remasters and I think this space terrain shit makes move commands a mess. it's funny that they tried to shake the formula but all of this compelled me to just make a control group of all the big ships I have and slow boat them towards objectives which was my brute force solution to everything in HW 1 & 2 and an issue they had somewhat avoided in DoK. The story bugs me because I think it's trying to have it both way by making Imogen a more relatable and humane character than Karan was (It's kinda working and I like her back and forth with Fleet Intel and her callout when a ship gets destroyed come across as more humane than Karan) but it's also doubling down on the "I plugged myself to a ship and therefore I'm a demigod" bullshit that made HW2 a mess of a story. The incarnate Queen is puzzling because her shtick about navigators being uberfrauens (weren't those called unbounds back in the day ?) being held down and distrusted by normies doesn't resonate at all when the whole game is about Imogene earning the trust of Intel guy and Karan being the revered mother of a galactic golden age. It's funny that Imogene built synthetic cores to replace the progenitor arcane bullshit and yet Karan and her dragon balls remain the eternal mcguffin.

7/10 I still kinda like it

Too much worthless talking, too many cutscenes, and I've only seen a small amount of campaign footage. We don't need more HUMANE and RELATABLE characters because we're homeworld fans, or supposed to be. It was never about individual people and their fricking feelings. It was a space opera with a grander perspective. So much for that.

Well, I don't know if I could call myself a fan, I really liked the remasters and DoK and that's about it.
        >It was never about individual people and their fricking feelings
Yeah, because when Kharak is burning Karan is feeling fine and fleet intel is reading out casualty reports without a hint of emotion in his voice. Those characters are basically robots.
        > It was a space opera with a grander perspective
See when you start thinking like this you write HW2 and you make an entire game about collecting mystical catalytic converters to defeat a guy with zero personality and it sucks.

See, I don't even think that HW3 is a good story I think it's failing at what it sets out to do but frontal opposition to what it seems to grasp at is idiotic.

Nobody's smiling during that scene as far as I remember. now the actual secret sauce for HW1 is how the VA for Fleet Intel plays it extremely withdrawn, trying to not lose his shit in the middle of a crisis and barely succeeding (that and adagio for string.)

You know what made things relatable and human? The emotions behind the mission. It wasn't spelled out, the developers knew we were intelligent enough to interpret things for ourselves. We didn't hear Karen crying and screaming at the burning of Kharak because we didn't need to, her deathly silence after jumping in was enough. The entire game was in fact about collecting resources and for most part fighting without any melodrama to accompany it. So it's not idiotic to oppose this ridiculous oversimplification of everything the series was once good at, and its complete inability to emulate the past, let alone improve on it.

I somewhat agree with the sentiment that you don't have to overplay it but in the meantime everybody praise cataclysm for it's horror vibes and a lot of it hinges on the VAs losing their shit constantly over the radio. I don't think you have to play it muted at all time, there is enough creative space in the Homeworld universe for a different approach to work. That being said

But now we have DOOD HYPERSPACE IS WEAPONISED with entire planets being crushed at whim; and it has all the impact of a wet fart.

is correct the game mostly fails to have an impact even on its own term

I replayed cataclysm recently and the only VAs who yell are the guys being bio engineered in realtime by the beast and the Kuunlan commander who raises his voice and yells when frustrated (like when your fleet gets butchered by the Bentusi) but still always remains professional, even then your tac officer (forget if she has a name now) always intervenes and is more of a cold calculating type. On top of that you have to remember the Kuunlan is just a mining vessel, and the Hiigaran command is always asking the most insane tasks out of the Somtaaw while simultaneously always forgetting they exist. The frustration as a player is palpable

don't get me wrong, I also think the story in HW3 is a mess but I don't think it come from Imogene as a character I think the problem lies in structure, the antagonist being an absolute non-entity (that and the cutscenes looking like absolute ass, they should have stuck with the rotoscoping thing they had for DoK) The Incarnates are just a baffling antagonist, there is nothing to them, if anything HW3 has the same storytelling issues as 2: excessive reliance on Progenitor mystic bullshit, Karan and the cores as an overbearing narrative center of gravity and an inability to characterize the threat to the protagonists in any meaningful way. Imogene being distraught about her status as fleet command and her relationship with Intel are probably the most passable elements of the story to me.

People keep talking about stupid writing, "woke" and all that related shit but this is pointless - turning game discussion into some culture war. "Woke" elements are meaningless when gameplay is good. And true problem with HW3 is how gameplay is fricking garbage. AI is brain-dead, whole 3D environment means nothing when all ships try to stay on same level and there is no directional armour, large ships are good against everyone else, which kills purpose of bombers and the like (which don't even attempt to dodge) and so on.

HW3 is shit game not because of some pink haired writer. It's shit game because gameplay sucks and swallows.

remasters are good, just plays better if you do not care about nostalgia and being a purist
remakes also come with the originals if you want to experience it
        also instal player patch mod

LMAO no. You still need a fanpatch to get the "remasters" to the level similiar to the original games.
And no, the "classic" versions attached with the remasters are NOT the originals, since Gearbox introduced bugs not present in the original CD version.

      Anonymous

Remaster is ok, but as a purist, I still prefer the original games over this one.
Originally the remaster was built to be more like 2, which angered HW 1 fans.
Then the devs made the remaster play more like the original, but since then the HW 2 part of the remaster has worked, sorta wrong. Like it plays more like the original now.
      So, for reference.
In original, fighters were built one at a time and issued into formations by the player.
In 2, they were built per squad and you could link squads into formations.
In remaster, you build fighters one at a time and issue them into their own formations.

In other words, they went out of their way to DESTROY ART, the same way they enjoy destroying historical monuments and relics out of sheer demonic spite. They hate humanity and everything that is beautiful.

If all this turns out to be some elaborate, Invasion of the Body Snatcher-like alien invasion with Childhood's End twist to it where humanity's creativity is stagnating because of it, they're doing a mighty fine job I must say.

HW3 specifically demonstrates criminal level of loss of know-how for the genre. Even compared to HW1 from over 20 years ago.

Got used to the controls. Just set modern with legacy camera.
It's a pretty-lookin game, but frickin hell, most of the missions feel constricting. I get they wanted to use the space-terrain thing, but it just makes maneuvering a chore and sometimes fricks with the camera.
Also just reached that cutscene with the giant head. Yeah, I wish they should've stuck with the motion-comic/painting style of the older games. They even showed it in the reveal trailer.

Even the voice acting is different. It's like they pitch a perfect idea and they strive really hard to make it SHIT.

        Anonymous

In my opinion, its because they're trying too hard with the cutscenes and story. Previous HW games were more minimalist and left most to the imagination of the players on what's happening.
They wanted it to be more personal story, but this ends up with the dialogue and character interactions coming off as "I AM ACTING"

          Anonymous

It's also that they are dumb people and people who are not capable of imagining themselves in the shoes of the player.
Ship order voiced reaction lines in the original games always fit what your intentions were perfectly, because they played the game like you would play it, and adjusted things accordingly.
I was watching some HW3 gameplay early, and the player was using the mothership in combat. He issued a move command to position it to better attack the enemy, and imogen acknowledged the order with something along the lines of "DISENGAGING! GET ME OUT OF THE AREA OF CONFLICT!!" like she was hurting or something.
This reeks of someone deciding this should be the line the mothership says when you move it while in combat, because, on paper, it seemed like the obvious situation. "Why would the player even move the mothership in a combat situation?"
The person who made that decision did not make it while playtesting. And whoever playtested it didn't give enough of a frick to raise this point, or they did but it was considered nitpicking and they were made fun of because perfectionism is for nerds.
I can personally relate to this as a (senior) developer. Whenever I raise any concerns that go beyond my basic duty, they're seen as an unnecessary waste of time (profitss). This is a rotten world.

I noticed the Mothership in HW3 moves really fast that sometimes even frigates have hard time trying to catch up. Not sure if that is just a pathfinding issue. Made sense in DoK with the land-carriers, but it shouldn't be a thing here.

              Anonymous

The whole sense of scale is fricked. Maps are tiny. The mothership looks like a carrier from HW2. Scouts and fighters are monstruously large and slow. They look like corvettes.

Why do they look like men lmao

Because of old hags in the industry feel threatened by beautiful (CGI) young women.

i vaguely recall using the mothership offensively so it doesn’t seem that much of a corner case, i really dislike the mothership becoming a ME instead of THE MOTHERSHIP, like it has a crew, it’s not literally just a woman

That's less a prophesy and more covering all bases when Higaarans were exiled and then destroyed for breaking a 3000 year old treaty which half the Taiidan thought was moronic for the emperor to do.

      >True remaster of HW1 when?
At this point, it should be done in the style of OpenTTD and such. Offer a faithful implementation with open assets and no branding, and let the players who "own the game" use the original ones to play. Somehow get a system down that lets you read the scenarios from the original game files.
