If you're looking for Japanese found footage horror, watch Occult. Or if you want something a little more fun horror, watch Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum. (it's Korean but whatever)

        Here's what you do right?
Go to the VR and/or horror section of a piracy site or freeware site or whatever. Open a tab for an uninteresting game and cover the part of your screen that has the preview on it. Now go back and open some highly ranked stuff, no images, and try not to read the name if you can help it. Download and give it a go. Go in with zero expectations.

I do this sometimes with indies in general, but it works great for horror/VR games. I say the horror OR VR tags work because when doing it, assuming a fairly generic art style/setting, a spooky VR game can sneak the frick up on you. Like you're just solving some dinky puzzle in a lit basement and all the lights go out and you hear steps on the stares sort of thing.

I would visit my grandparents as a kid and sleep over a lot of times. They lived on a farm in the middle of the fricking woods. They were old boomers and they would go to bed early while I would stay up late and watch violent movies on their old ass TV with the dog. One night the dog suddenly woke up and started staring into the halway. I lowered the volume and heard something walking outside. The dog got up and started staring down the dark hallway that led to the front door just like the dog in this painting. In a few minutes the noises stopped and the dog wnt back to sleep but it still freaked me out.

I live in a rural area so it's pitch black and silent as the grave. One day I was doggo sitting my Mom's Beaglehound, I was walking him before bed and he started growling deeper than I've ever heard him. Plus the hair on his back was standing up. Made my blood run cold so we immediately went back inside.

I told my Mom about what happened and she laughed then said 'Oh he always does that when he smells a possum or raccoon.'

Bears are actually very chill and you're more likely to be killed by a car than by a bear. Bears are the most peaceful creatures out there as long as you don't provoke us.They are also beautiful and strong and worthy only of praise and admiration and anyone who says otherwise is just a lame bear hater.

Legitimately the only reason all large predators aren't extinct yet is the government telling you that you can't kill them. If social order collapsed anywhere with a large human population remaining is going to exterminate any dangerous animal nearby as a matter of course.

Black bears you can usually just shout down, but for a brown bear you need a 10mm at least and a 45-70 or 12ga w/ slugs ideally. Shooting anything less is just gonna piss it off.

if you get into a situation where you feel threatened by a brown bear you're either an obnoxious weeb playing ninja in the woods and deserve to get mauled, or you're so extremely unlucky to have come across the 1 in 1000000 rabid bears, that you should just accept that you suck at living

Subtlety and fear of the unknown will always be superior to showing the monster in vivid detail, no matter how much you make them scream in the players face or how "scary" you think you've made them look.

Just clarifying, you still think there should be a very present and physical threat of a monster but that it should be barely visible or just never fully seen well? The best games are where you never see the monster or encounter an actual threat. The only thing that matters in a horror game is atmosphere.

The problem with this is when the player realizes there are no stakes the game loses all tension. I played Iron Lung, and it fricking sucked cause I knew the game would never actually punish me so it was just me increasing numbers on an x-y grid.

Yeah, you of course need to maintain the illusion of threat. It's a delicate balance.
Problem with having legitimate threats in a horror game that kill the player is that each death diminishes the horror and alleviates the pressure you've built (or should have built).
It's especially bad if you make a hard to navigate area where the player dies multiple times. That completely atomizes any and all atmosphere you might have built and the game goes from a horror game to an annoying survival game.

            Anonymous

Yeah, I recommended specifically the first hour of The Bunker up above because after that the fear of the unknown starts to wane and resource management becomes the main concern. It's hard to deliver a really solid long-form horror game because you have to boil it down to mechanics at some point, and if you only ever prop up an illusion of challenge then your player will eventually test the boundaries and realize it's a lie.

I think the beginning of the first Amnesia did it really well too
There's no direct threat for a while and you won't die if you play the game as intended, but if you try to test the boundaries like running after the shadows of a passing monster, you actually get punished and can get killed earlier than the first official encounter

This was the exact problem I had with Lost In Vivo, Despite having absolutely top tier sound design it didn’t matter due it being heavily combat focused with respawning enemies, any tension or care shamefully thrown out the window in the most unapologetically disappointing way.
When the most horrific part of your horror game is the opening 10 minutes and from there I’m beating living 16 subway trains to death with a sledge hammer because I’m completely disconnected from anything and trying to milk any entertainment I can, there’s a fundamental design flaw there

This was my main problem with Outlast 2. All the big threats were one hit kill monsters in these big ass spaces. The game wants you to be stealthy and hide and explore around, but when everything can kill you by hitting you once, it just sucks out all the fear and tension and makes it more frustrating. I would just rush through every area straight to the exit without bothering to explore. Not because I was scared, but because I just wanted to get it the frick over with. Terrible fricking game.

I think a good way to deal with it is to do away with the instakill shit and instead introduce a threat that puts heavy harm on you. Now you might survive being caught but it will actually INCREASE the terror as you try to escape either heavily wounded, low on resource or both.

            >let's appeal to the lowest common denominator of players who die so many times that their frustration boils over their fears
No, to remove the physical threat is to neuter the horror. You need to realise that you can't appeal to everyone, someone is always dissatisfied.
Your idea dissatisfies actual players, people who want to immerse within the horror against actual ODDS, and instead enriches people who'd get the same enjoyment out of a visual novel or a movie.

If someone dies so many times that it waters down the fear factor, that's either a failure of the players incompetence or the games designer. The solution here isn't to entirely remove the source like a pussy, it's to figure out which side is the problem, is the horror game so difficult it borders on impossible? Ok that's the devs being stupid, they need to fix it or take it in account moving forward, is the player so bad that it borders on autism? Frick them then, too bad.

Horror is about aesthetics and theme. It's because of these elements that Silent Hill is still deemed the greatest survival horror franchise ever.

I will not say that gameplay mechanics aren't important, but if there's one genre in which story and presentation are more important than gameplay it is survival horror.
Humans fear the unknown and the odd not just because they fear what they don't understand, but also because they fear what they cannot control.
A story focused game where you play, effectively, as a detective (like in Silent Hill) is a prerequisit, I think, to a lasting survival horror experience.

Issue is that you only needs to die once to lose the fear factor, once your brain realizes that getting caught by the monster or whatever just makes you go back a bit earlier in the game, you don't get as scared anymore
I think the first RE managed to solve this issue with limited saves, the game isn't difficult and I never actually ran out of save, but the fear of losing hours of progress make the prospect of dying actually scary, without being hard enough that it would commit to the frustration

                >you only need to die once to lose the fear factor
A well designed horror game/a player who isn't brain dead wouldn't die more than 3 or 4 times during a horror games action moments. A good horror game should have its threat phases sprinkled throughout the game in such a way that you aren't being attacked by the same thing rapidly in consecutive areas. That's what it means to be a proper horror game.

By your logic I can say that once you realise there aren't any actual physical threats, nothing to hide from in your game of heavy atmosphere, it just becomes a walking simulator, you lose all fear because there are no consequences, no risks. I agree atmosphere is important and necessary but so is a real source of danger ever present in some way, you need both otherwise its bad

                Counterpoint
Once you realize a game doesn't intent to actually hurt you then you lose out on a lot of horror as well and you can frick around with no threat to your progress.
Look at the new Alone in the Dark for example. There are a number of scenes where the game goes all shaky and you're expected to run from this scene while good characters screaming but there's absolutely nothing forcing you to move.
I'm in a collapsing temple while the game is playing pounding music and dust is falling everywhere but I can just mosey around as the doors only slide shut once you're past them and huge blocks drop on what enemies do spawn.

Scratches is one of the scariest games I have ever played and the player character is never in any actual danger during its entire playtime.

For something to be scary, it needs to unsettle you, and that doesn't require spooky monsters that hunt you down.

          Anonymous

That's fine, and scratches is a good game. But to then take that and say the best games don't have any threats or that horror should be designed around having no threats is a wild and unreasonable conclusion. Considering all of the best horror video games ever made have all included things like jump scares, enemy encounters, or combat, to say that these things are detrimental to the formula (or even imply it) is silly.

When every single horror game released refuses to put any stakes into it, new releases fail before they're even made. There was a particularly insufferable period of horror media where EVERY game copied Amnesia and forced you to run and hide from every enemy because "combat ruins the horror", except, when you learn that EVERY encounter is to be hidden from, that also ruins it. Hear a noise? Okay, hop in the closet and wait 30 seconds. You got found? Welp, nothing you could have done, pick a different closet.

Purely atmospheric games can work, but they need to be nested in a market that has all kinds of other games with threats so they can work by contrast. It's not enough to just make a game feel spooky.

          Anonymous

First of all, Dead Space had zero genuinely scary moments. Secondly, you're right in that a horror game should have respites but not because "it gets boring" (??? it's fricking horror, the point is to face fear) but because it's mentally taxing and people need a break.

NTA but I do get what he's saying. It's the difference between a horror movie that slowly builds dread and tension leading up to scary moments and one that is just constant nonstop jump scares. Eventually, you grow desensitized to the jump scares and know to expect them and that makes it boring because it's no longer scary.

which is why good horror games don't rely entirely on jumpscares

This. A dude with a bloody apron and pig mask carrying a chainsaw is less scary than something just weird like a naked man with absurdly long arms and a ragged teddy bear. You know what the chainsaw man is going to do to you and while dying may be painful and unpleasant, it's a suffering you expect. You didn't know what long armed naked man is gonna do to you or where the suffering will end. Will you die? Will whatever he's going to do to you make you wish you were dead? You don't know know.

The real secret sauce to good video game horror is a willingness to go to subjects most others aren't willing to directly confront. Even edgelords have their own shared sets of untouchable subjects, and within their preferences they still have limits on *how* they're willing to portray (typically in an exaggerated, garish, cartoony way). The criticial component is to deny resolution or catharsis, don't let the player feel like they have a way to circumvent or "solve" the horrifying elements.

You know an old, middling horror game that would blow people's minds if it was released today? Witch House. It's edgy, sure, but it's also unsettling in how it portrays its subject matter.

I think subtle edgy is the best
When you get shown all the edgy bits on screen it just turn into mindless torture porn most of the time, while making it more elusive add a psychological, more cunning component to it
I remember playing stasis and being shocked when you learn your wife has been raped and forced to birth genetic abominations from just a simple computer log
it turns a plot point coming straight out of a hentai game and made it actually gut wrenching

I think about my intense loathing for that Grim Beard horror YouTuber. How he’s this edgy noise scream metal wannabe goth and how his videos are full of dead baby and ground up corpses in his basement style edgelord humor. And then I think back to 2020 when he tried to balance all of that with punch a Nazi “we RESPECT pronouns here, xister!” politics and how flat his schtick fell. Horror has to be willing to go the places you won’t, wherever that place may be.

I feel like the sound a creature makes is much more important than what it actually looks like.

Take the tripods from War of the Worlds, for example. Pretty unremarkable design all things considered, but the moment they blare that horn-like sound, every pair of pants in a five mile radius is soiled.

Sound design in general is very important for horror.

Sound design, monster design, and writing are all equally important to how something is presented in horror. Regardless of whether it's a movie, a book, or a game. These are like the 3 pillars good horror actually stands on.

    humans are boring
    humanish sized monsters are okay
    ghosts are antiscary
Idk how theyd pull it off but a horror game where youre running away from like Monster Hunter scale monsters would be frickin rad. Cosmic horror is cool too but Im a gay and I like seeing what the monster looks like, but the bigger the better.

      Anonymous

Maybe make it so you're basically traversing between heavy brush and buildings which are full of smaller monsters you can beat with a stick but then when you hit the clearings you have to be cautious nothing is out there. You have to spot any possible cover before leaving, if you exit without caution you're just trying to make a mad dash to the next safe zone. Maybe even make it worse where the giant monsters can still reach into the "safe zones" so even if you make it by the skin of your teeth you could be snapped back. Maybe even make the giant monsters like sadistic big cats who'll toy with you sometimes. Bat your character around instead of going for an instant kill, cut off your escape then wait for you to start running again, fun shit like that.

i think a horror fishing game could be good
make it start off normal and you progress from maybe a deer in the woods and then you start seeing weird shit but not sure because trees and tall grass obfuscate a lot of it so you might be seeing shit. fish you do catch end up getting weirder and weirder like maybe an extra eyeball here and there
a bit like the duck hunt horror game but more grounded in reality

sound design would be key for this.

like doki doki literature club that shit would get spoiled asap.

I've been trying to refind a youtube horror series recently that did it's stuff really well, but I'm having zero luck. Does anyone know what I'm talking about when I say it's a channel about a guy being haunted by constant spirits in his house but he's acting like it's completely normal? Like, he marks out where he can step on the floor and talks about what corners something will probably jump out of? There's at least one video where he describes how to get away from a specific type of spirit that just requires him to stare at it for like 2 hours. Eventually, the series starts getting darker and darker and it starts to heavily imply he's so fricking haunted because he's actually some kind of murderer. Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

                >Despite dragons being depicted in ancient stories across the planet, I will choose to believe some israelites that their bones actually belong to big chickens.
You’re so right. Damn all those ancient humans across the globe are such liars, not like our very trustworthy israeli scientists we have today.

                >and the Norse
Nidhogg is just a big serpent. It has no wings, it has no fire breath. Hardly a dragon.
                >and the Japanese, and the Chinese
Jiaolongs and Tianlongs are just floating serpents, they also lack wings or fire breath. Completely different from the archetypal dragon.
                >and the Central Americans
I assume you're talking about things like Quetzalcoatl? It's a feathered serpent, not a dragon.
                >and the Central Europeans, and the Eastern Europeans
All in the same area and continent, with thousands of years of cultural exchange between themselves. The same myth spreading around that area is hardly shocking.

did you even read what you just posted?
you basically just acknowledged that all those cultures did in fact have dragons and then slapped arbitrary reasoning for why they aren’t dragons
I don’t even get your point
are israeli dragons the only real ones to you?

Reptilian, fire breathing, wings, 4 legs, and a large, prehensile tail are the distinctive traits of a dragon. Anything that deviates from this is not a dragon.

You have to wonder why every major civ has a creation myth regarding a giant serpent though. (I.e the Aztecs with Quetzacoalt, Vikings and the world serpent, The semites and the snake in the garden, Europe with Dragons, China/Asia with Kirins) there has to be some germ of an idea there

Not even most third worlder christians are pure creationists and they believe evolution somehow ties into god's grand plan, I've even seen it be described in a religious docummentary as "it's as if god was a watch maker and the natural progression of the world was just what he put in motion".
You're objectively stupider than a third worlder.

horror games should be so easy but somehow most people making horror games are creatively bankrupt or have no resources
    here, free game plot:
    >player is part of SWAT or national guard
    >game opens up with you being deployed in response to a zombie outbreak with sightings reported of other worldly monsters
    >fight some zombies
    >show off a monster, player can shoot at it but DO NOT show the monster be hurt in any way from any attacks against it, encourage the player to run away or make the monster run off screen after appearing
    >encounter hooded cultists among the chaos
    >again, let the player shoot at cultists, regardless of the players actions however, the cultist chants seem to blacken the sun
    >screen goes black but the sounds of screaming and monstrous gnashing of teeth can be heard
    >eventually have the noise fade away and have the player character start to make frantic rummaging sounds as they pull out a flashlight from their pack and turn it on, finally letting the player see something again
    >the floor should be completely alien to the player, somewhat clean to throw off the expectations from what they heard
    >should the player point the light upwards let them see nothing but dark fog
    >from this point on you have the freedom to spook your player with literally anything
    >motivation for the player is to escape whatever hellscape they now exist in
    >give the player tools to fight back but be certain to design monster encounters in a way that surprises the player (intense speed, swarm attacks, hit and run, something’s in the water)
    >end the game however you want but I’d end it with the player finds a way back to Earth and he might as well not have because it’s basically hell now

see you have a good premise but you yourself couldn't figure out how to get past the intro. A lot of good concepts are good as short concepts but hard to flesh out into a real game. Hell even most walking simulators fricking suck, Edith Finch is probably the only one I could wholeheartedly recommend to everyone, teenager and boomer alike.

        Anonymous

what do you mean I couldn’t get past the intro? want me to write up every monster encounter for an entire game in a random thread?
you can take the game in any direction you want with the premise I put down, fricking travel to other dimensions and shit I don’t care
its so easy to make up game plots even for horror but somehow the best people come up with is backrooms and mascots
