JRPGs are basically Japanese Quest for Glory adventure games
except now they are bloated with garbage dialogue, disingenuous translations, and annoying voice acting.

Chrono Triggers combat was so fricking mindless easy the game would be better without that slog

now that you mention rpgmaker, the combat system from OFF turns that game from an 8/10 to an instant 4/10
legitimately one of the most infuriating experiences i've had with any video game, like how do you frick it up that badly

Earthbound combat is dogshit but it would still be a worse game overall if it was going from town to town talking to npcs only.

earthbound combat is literally dragon quest with rolling meters.

The rolling meters were a very fun idea though tbqhwyf. Super intuitive even for children and made for memorably unique experiences like getting hit with bazillion damage by an exploding tree, and needing to mash through exiting the battle.

not directly part of the combat but earthbound also had visible enemy sprites in the overworld as well as enemies running away from you when you were stronger than them, and being able to instantly kill enemies directly from the overworld without going into battle if you're strong enough to one shot them. Those are pretty nice features

EarthBound was (to my knowledge) one the first RPGs that took FULL advantage of flavor text in battle. Many text prompts go beyond just describing an action and exist to be funny/interesting by themselves.
Memorable combat lines such as "Pokey used Ness as a shield" and "You cannot grasp the full form of Giygas's attack" go a long way to enrich the simplistic JRPG combat.
EarthBound's handles its NPCs the same way. While the NPCs in other JRPGs would coldly dispense information to the player, EarthBound's NPCs say nothing useful, just random jokes and bullshit for the sake of it

Mother 3 made combat fun imo, thanks to my tone deaf ass and lack of rhythm i never dealt much damage but it was nice of it to be an option to deal more damge in a jrpg TO THE BEAT

earthbound combat is trash whenever she isn't in your party

Not that hot of a take, some RPGs are simply carried by elements other than combat. However you still need something at the end of the day to break the monotony so you'd have to replace the combat by something else.

when a game makes the intelligent decision to remove combat like in Disco Elysium then like half the posts about it on Ganker are just "lol no combat!!! not a real game!!!" because this board is a bunch of mongoloids

CRPGS would be better without combat, I love playing classic fallout and then having to save constantly because I can get hit anywhere from 0 to 1420 damage on a single turn depending on how many of the dice gods i angered

Then there wouldn't be any gameplay, and solving puzzles alone isn't fun or wouldn't stop the evil guys, ergo, you are a big gay b***h.
