Theres no chance, direct story sequels always see a drop-off. FFXIII-2 fixed most of FFXIII's complaints but still sold only about half. Rebirth will sell about 2.5million and part 3 will sell barely more than 1million.

I didn't like how all the enemies changed their focus to the character you chose to control, that made playing with Aerith very annoying since you mostly spend the time running away from the enemies, and not healing/attacking.

FF7R has been my favorite game in the past like 15 years, it's a masterpiece that I played nonstop for like 60 or 70 hours and I cannot wait for the sequel. I was a huge fan of FF7 growing up and I love what they did with it and the story changes, I really hope Zack is back that would be dope AF if we get a side story of him back in midgar with the aftermath of everyone else leaving. It's the entire reason I basically have a PS4 and a PS5, it won't be a failure at all. No one cares about seething gays on Ganker.

I've never played a gacha before but trust me when I say this one is EXTREMELY generous. It's 7 FUDGING PERCENT chance for a 5 star. Literally do a mere 10 roll and you can expect a very good chance of rolling one. And if you somehow get unlucky they have the easiest reroll system I've seen. It's gr8. There's all kinds of soft systems to get more too like the stamp system and soft selecting rate ups for backups. It's actually so fun.
You might see some popups but this is rare, brief, and temporary. They will become rarer the longer you play. (Blame Diablo for this, not SE) Also there's like 3 pop up ads I saw in the first day which does suck but hey I just ignored them. I did buy the 1.99 deal though, big value.

Only part of the gameplay I found enjoyable were the boss sequences.

The game is complete shit from a story perspective, and it shits all over the original FF7, which for some reason is starting to get a lot of hate in recent years just like OoT, with people calling it overrated etc (it is not).
But the gameplay is absolutely unique, there's nothing like it on the market, and when you really get into the groove it can feel almost like a turn-based game. The fight against the house was some of the most fun I had with a non-Dragon Quest Square Enix game. then you have sequences like the dancing stuff which is straight up kino, and the intro was pretty much perfect.
I also think they got the characters right. Cloud, Tifa, Aerith and Barret all have their personalities from the original and NOT kingdom hearts or the spinoff. Cloud is a loveable insecure autist, Aerith is amazing as always, Tifa is kinda boring but she hasbeen in the original too, Barret is straight up better than in the original.
It's a pity, if they had simply sticked with the original more closely, like RE4 Remake did, they owuld have had a modern classic on their hands, and the game would've been beloved. But their arrogance got to them and they fucked it up.
For these reasons, I still think FF7R is a 8/10 and by far, and I mean by far, the best Squaresoft game since 2010 or so. (I am saying squaresoft to excluse Dragon Quest, which I still consider far better).
But I can totally see why someone would hate the game, because the story really is total garbage just like you said.

Blame modern retrospectives and older fans coming back with more cynicism. Personally, FF7 has a unique charm to it because I grew up with it, which is probably bias, but I can also see the faults and realize it's not some strange goldmine of impossibly awesome stuff, it's just a fun game with a quirky if underbaked story and motif.
7R feels like Nojima and Kitase lost the narrative in favor of trying to reinvent the wheel and MAKE it stand out more, but they're overcomplicating what doesn't need to be made complicated. Like they watched all the people call it Evangelion for JRPGs over the years (when there's a lot weirder shit out there for that) and are actually trying to follow it up with quadrupling down on that perception.

Well even to old timers. I absolutely loved the game as a kid, probably called it my favourite. Upon returning to it a few years ago I enjoyed going through it and 'reliving the memory' as it were, but nevertheless felt the storytelling and writing (granted the translations are shaky) wasn't quite as sharp as I remembered it.
But I would agree remake is a worse game in most aspects.

Unless you consider 7R as a sequel in the sense of Sephiroth trying to wind back and start anew, yeah it was still the "last part of the timeline" besides Red's post-7 scene. It's been a very long time but I don't think Vincent lost the Protomateria or Chaos in the ending of DoC, he just slept for a while.

Because a lot of people were asking for 1:1 remakes, or at least something relatively faithful, and then Kitase shoved in literal alternate timelines and time jannies. Granted, I think the people who asked for a remake because of a PS3 tech demo for 10 years were retarded, but this entire mess boiled down to "we know we can make a lot of money off of actually and finally doing this, but man, it'd be so BORING if we just did something so straightforward, we gotta expand and mix it up!"
I don't think even Square-Enix actually knew how fucky this was all going to be. They were interviewing people in the streets at release asking if folks were hyped for starting up the VII story for the first time with the remake and shit.

You do the story missions for progression, then do gacha rolls for characters and equipment to use on free missions to grind up what you've unlocked so they can progress the game more efficiently as far as I can tell looking in. The whole thing is literally a gacha system framework surrounding basic retellings of FF7 stories.
