How come this game is both a masterpiece and a piece of garbage?

Can someone explain it to me?
So the game is fun, interesting, creative. Has "deep" characters, fun gameplay, unique themes, amazing OST, etc.

At the same time it's full of plot holes, overreaching, bad voice acting, nonsensical moments, inconsistencies, attracts pseudointellectuals, etc.

How did they manage to make a game that is both?

    >At the same time it's full of plot holes, overreaching, bad voice acting, nonsensical moments, inconsistencies
It all adds to the weird ass feeling of the game. You'll usually see people describe it as feeling like a dream for how jank and nonsensical shit can get at times, but for some that just makes everything more engaging and spooky.

Whether that works for (You) or is just bullshit cope for the parts of the game that don't feel great such as the combat is a different story.

      >but for some that just makes everything more engaging and spooky.

Which is why i mentioned pseudointellectuals.

      >plot holes
      like what

Let's see, there's a reason half the Silent Hill 2 wiki is just "fan theories" rather than actual information regarding actual scenarios. Like who is Ernest.

The city of Silent Hill is established as an actual city with normal citizens, cops, etc. Yet the protagonist goes around whacking imaginary beings with the head and no cop tackles them. You can maybe THEORIZE (again, more theories) that the character just ghost walks around or zaps into all 3 worlds into key moments (since it's required for the real world to interact with people like James and Eddie, see Laura).

At the same time, you have a little girl escaped from an Orphanage who is getting into the exact same places as James, without being stopped or anything. She literally plays with Teddy Bears in the most ridiculously creepy places you can think of.

Maria is the biggest mess plot wise, with people thinking "oh yes being an overcomplicated unexplainable mess is interesting", but it's not.
You can't have a character that is
      > Just a projection from James mind to punish him
      > An actual demon succubus who wanted James for herself
      > An actual person created from James mind who has her own desires and wishes
      > A walking dream gaslighting James about her dying or not, because even she doesn't has consistency
      > A real world being since she's mentioned in SH3 and seen in SH4 posters

None of it makes sense. 99% of the story is just pulls and people think "the most convoluted, the better!". If people need a milllion theories to explain why 2+2=4 in your game, then IT'S TRASHHHHH. Carried solely by fog, depression and ost.

you are taking the game too consciously. the plot was never meant to be took seriously. the only serious thing is that james killed his wife. the rest could be very well made up things and hallucinations from his mind (and they actually reflect various sides of his psyche)
director was a fan of the occult and coincidentally the occult is a representation of our unconscious. so the game just happens to be a psychological masterpiece just like many other "occult" games. dreams behave the same way even though they have plot holes, overreaching, bad voice acting, nonsensical moments, inconcistencies, attract pseudointellectuals etc. and yet sometimes we make incredibly powerful or touching dreams.
silent hill is similar to what happens in our unconscious but portrayed to real life. Jung would be proud of this series.

But it is. People present it as the second coming of christ, they act like the story is the best thing they have ever seen. I couldn't stop laughing at the bad voice acting and terrible dialogues.

I thibk you are taking the opinions of others too seriously. Form your own opinion of it like you are now.
Personally I really enjoyed the original SH2 game. The voice acting is weird, but I think the weirdness added to the game's charm. Angela is the only one I felt was miscast, but listening to the Making Of video I see that it was intentional.

you probably want something else from games than SH fans then. have you ever considered that everyone has different tastes?
also, it's okay to like only some parts of a game. i love drakengard for the PS2 for it's story and OST even though i hate the gameplay. that's fine

              >have you ever considered that everyone has different tastes?

If your taste is liking shallow convoluted stories without proper resolutions or explanations that make players invent 99999 pathetic tumblr tier fanfics then your taste is trash.

If you go to McDonalds and buy a burger, you want the meat between the buns. You don't tell the wagie "give me just the bread, i'll make theories about the burger existing".

The writers are hacks and the playerbase eats it up because they think the more stuff left unexplained, confusing, nonsensical or outright contradicting each other, the deeper it is!!!
              > Brooo it's a like a dreaaam!!!
This is not Alice in Wonderland this is "Resident evil plagiarism with fog and demons"

the very first thing that should be obvious is that isn't what Silent Hill is at all...

          >is that isn't what Silent Hill is at all..

There are 3 worlds and it's established the protagonists are in all 3 at all times, merely seeing one of them.

There's a reason in SH:Origins all the "monsters" you're killing are actual normal citizens from SH, you were literally running around whacking regular people in the head seeing them as abominations.

There's a reason in SH2 James can talk with Laura even as he still sees the world in the foggy spirit version.

I thibk you are taking the opinions of others too seriously. Form your own opinion of it like you are now.

          >I thibk you are taking the opinions of others too seriously.

It's not the opinions of others, it's how the game has been criticized and analyzed for decades. This is not some "wahh you saw someone in Ganker say "game good" you should just ignore them". People genuinely believe a game with a little girl stepping on the protagonist's hand is peak storytelling.

Voice acting is bad (or rather dull, maybe on purpose) but the dialogue isn't anywhere near terrible

First of all, the three worlds bullshit is from the western games which you should have never taken into account.
And second, only the first Silent Hill matters. The rest were made without the original creator's involvement and are nothing more than official fan-fiction.

The creator of Silent Hill wasn't even inspired in resident evil and didn't try to copy that (Konami did want a cheap copy but they ignored them). It's also the best in the series.

I replayed it a week ago. I think the dialogue is actually great and fits the tone of the game perfectly. The only instance where the dialogue is terrible (the whole scene is terrible) is when James gets trolled by Laura and locked up in a hospital room. Cringed and laughed

NTA, but I have literally, no joke played the game over 50 times. Note: over fifty.

The dialogue is great, spot on, and a prime example of GOOD acting delivering more than meets the eye.
I'm starting to suspect that Your kind are just way too used to the "grunt to microphone, monotonously" Hollywoodian "acting".

also, saying that james voice acting is bad when the voice actor, that was just getting out of an abusive relationship with his wife and related hard to james, put his heart and pain into it, is insulting.
even Mary voice actress was crying at the end poem.

    What plot holes?

      saucy

There are a couple plot holes.

The pizza Eddie found just appears. Who cooked it for him? Was it frozen? If James is in love with Maria, why does Maria only want sex with James? Laura's friends with Mary, but Mary doesn't seem to know or talk about Laura despite the relationship having a real impact on James' life. Why doesn't their relationship feel stressed or strained, even when Laura knows James must kill her? Pyramid Head is punishing James for forgetting what he did to his wife, but Pyramid Head is also trying to hurt the people closest to James, like Maria; if Pyramid Head is a manifestation of James' guilt, shouldn't he also be around characters like Eddie?

What. Were did you get this from?
Pyramid Head is punishing James until he realized what he must do. It is why they kept killing Maria to remind him and make him suffer. Killing Eddie would be pointless. That is why they kill themselves once its clear James is ready to face Mary as the boss because their job is done.
