There's a lot of people that don't know about how the early US RPG scene and the UK wargaming scene influenced media and games so heavily. Which itself was influenced by fringe writers in magazines.

I'm not really sure what Warhammer copied from D&D, it definitely lifts huge things from Tolkien and Michael Moorwiener's books.

I remember reading in some magazine back then that it was meant to be a Warhammer game initially, would make sense considering it's so blatant

it's even more blatant for Starcraft.
      Blizzard lacks originality.

Warcraft 1 wasn't really ever a Warhammer game, Blizzard pitched making one to Games Workshop but were declined then made their own setting blackjack and hookers.

If you think Starcraft is a ripoff of Warhammer 40k then you simply don't have a wide experience of scifi literature and scifi tabletop RPGs and wargames; they're both very derivative of other things and bear more resemblance to other IPs than each other.

Implying Tolkien didn't copy Howard who copied Lovecraft etc.

Howard didn't copy Lovecraft, he published too much before he'd even heard of Lovecraft, so he fanboyed and added references.
Tolkien didn't copy Howard, that's astoundingly moronic because he literally copied from historical writers like Saxo Grammaticus, Tacitus and the histories and legends they were transcribing.

Most of the early days of GW catalog was ideas lifted straight from their own tabletop sessions. When people say D&D they do not necessarily mean taking something directly from TSR products or even the rulesets themselves. They typically mean from the act of playing D&D and their own creations that spawned from that. Most of these creative and intellectual types ran their own settings with their own homebrew rulesets.
Which in of itself was heavily influenced by many things going on at the time, TV, comics, magazines, D&D products etc.

Yeah that makes sense, particularly seeing the snippets of old rules I've seen that looked like an ad hoc attempt to play army battles with your D&D models and pike and shot blocks at the same time.

Warhammer has a bit of every major Sci-Fi and Fantasy universe in it, doesn't it? Space Marines are Starship Troopers, The warp navigation psyker stuff is from Dune with their guild and the god emperor as well, the tyranids are the Xenomorphs from Alien, the Eldar and Orcs are maybe inspired by Tolkien. There's probably even more stuff borrowed from somewhere else, but I couldn't say for certain.

They aren't just "muh noble savages". If you actually played wc3 there is no reason you would get this impression because that role is already filled quite obviously by the taurens.
