In regards to the games it's been over 25 years so you can for sure shut the fuck up. Arieth dies when you get to the temple if the ancients because sephiroth kills her but she saves the world via the life stream and stops the meteor. Cloud was never in soldier. Arieth only likes cloud because he reminds her of Zack the biggest Chad that actually was in soldier.
          Enjoy your remake.

m8 the entire full game has existed since 1997, you can play the whole story in 35 hours if you want. There's even a very dedicated modder group 7thheaven who has made the base PC version very improved.

Why wait for a three chapter fullofbullshittimewasting "remake" that gutfucked the story in the first place.
Why pay $180+ for three games that only have the story of one game that already exists.

Friendly reminder that if you played this scene on the PC version, that version is screwed up and has messed up music, and completely messes up the tone of the entire sequence.

I don't know if the console re-releases are based on the original PSX version or the PC version, so can't say whether those do the scene correctly or not.

        Anonymous

I'm going to be autistic about this.
The original PSX version of this entire sequence
(Starts at 5:30:52, ends at 5:34:40)

        ?si=_cizedoM-n0qKYrz&t=19852

        PC Version
(Starts at 17:09:57, ends at 17:13:50)

        ?si=s99H5s_RfEIENv_2&t=61797

This scene is supposed to play the "dark part" of FF7's main theme and loop up until Cloud grabs the sword where it switches to the "heroic, triumphant part of the main theme" as Cloud lifts Sephiroth and tosses him. The original PSX version (first video above) has that.

The PC version instead playts the main theme straight until it ends, then it's just silence. THEN it plays the normal reactor music during the Sephiroth stabbing Cloud, Cloud grabbing the sword, and tossing Sephiroth.

It completely messes up the scene.
This has been my autistic TED talk.

            I don't believe so, no.
If you already know it's a thing, it's not TOO big a deal because you know how the scene is supposed to play out anyway.
It's more annoying when you know a new player has no idea what the scene is supposed to actually be like, and why it's such a cool scene for people who played it on its original release.

I felt the exact same way when I looked videos for that and saw that not all versions had that music play the way it did in the original.
For reference, I played the PSN version on a PSP. I saw some videos and the PS3 and Switch versions also have the correct sequences too, I believe they patched that in.

This happens with the "remaster" version as well, at least the PS4 version.

          Anonymous

That means that the PS4 version is probably based on the old Eidos PC version of 7 as well. That's sort of disappointing.

            Anonymous

The remaster is fucked in general. IIRC at several points in the game the music will be fucked. For example, when you encounter Yuffie it doesn't play her theme when you recruit her after the battle, it plays the world map theme. This happens at a few points in the game, instead of playing the intended track it'll play the previous track that played instead.

              Anonymous

The Switch seems to have patched this issue, at least. Steam version still seems fucked and I can't find evidence of the PS4 version.

                Anonymous

There have been numerous patches for the PS4, XBONE, and Switch versions. All 3 had various fucked up problems, some shared between them and some different. IIRC the XBONE and Switch versions fixed the music issues but I don't think the PS4 version has.

Also despite Cloud's claims of being a gigachad 1st class SOLDIER, he's at lv1 during the flashback because he never knew what it felt like to be that strong so he can't recreate it in his head. And it's not even a design oversight because at the start of the game he's at lv5, stronger because of Hojo's experiments, stronger than your average man aka Barrett, but still relatively weak

you shouldnt take game mechanic stat levels as representative of the storytelling. you, the player has to start somewhere
what you're saying makes no sense when you consider Tifa, a normal human female, kicks as much ass as Cloud who can literally magically wield a 140 pound sword.

No, storywise, it's well understood Cloud is a mako-infused superhuman (after he recovers from the poisoning).

Reminder that Sephiroth has never beaten Cloud in a direct confrontation.
    >First Fight: Cloud just picks Sephiroth up and tosses him into the reactor. Sephiroth was so shocked at what was happening that his brain just completely white-noised as this happened.

    >Third Fight: Cloud gets his second win and pulls a new finisher out of his ass to defeat Sephiroth in Advent Children

I mean in complete fairness, Sephiroth probably could have done something about it in the reactor. Like all Cloud did was just pick Sephiroth up and toss him. I like them because they flesh out the First Class SOLDIERs while also making all SOLDIERs feel even more pointless and stupid because Cloud keeps kicking Sephiroth's ass.

Seriously, by all accounts, Cloud SHOULD Sephiroth's be inferior, and probably Weiss, Angeal and Genesis' as well. Fucker just keeps doing the impossible and keeps beating Sephiroth's ass. I actually kinda want the real Weiss and Genesis to appear in subsequent parts of the Remake, just so that Cloud can clown on them as well. This literal who nobody who never had any real SOLDIER training and doesn't know jack-shit just keeps making a mockery of all SOLDIERs as a whole.

It's the hard work beating natural talent shit every shonen manga tries to do but ends up failing at because they all inevitably introduce some bullshit power up to the MC.

Meanwhile Cloud is just a retard who got experimented on, and his experiments didn't even help him, just gave him more brain damage.

            Anonymous

Yeah. Funny thing is there's never really been a proper, justifiable reason for why Cloud was able to beat Sephiroth each and every time. It's not like he's been through any sort of training from hell, and he didn't even have enough talent to join SOLDIER. Hell, we don't even have any proper explanation for why Cloud's as strong as he is period. Yeah, Zack imprinted on him, but would that really make him fight as well as Zack? Fight BETTER than Zack? 'Cause remember, Zack couldn't beat Sephiroth. Cloud has NEVER ONCE LOST to Sephiroth. Copying Zack would not make you stronger than Sephiroth. So we still don't really know why Cloud keeps winning.

And it’s funny how fanart or games outside of FFVII always portray Cloud vs. Sephiroth as if they’re equally-matched Bleach-esque fights while in game Sephiroth gets absolutely destroyed both times while underestimating him

Funnily enough, Sephiroth technically does win in Remake, at the very end when he disarms Cloud. But he seems dissatisfied with this. That Sephiroth seems to be from a point after his original final defeat, and he knows that Cloud hasn't reached his peak potential yet. He's only just barely left Midgar, he's only just started his journey, hence the "Not yet".

It has nothing to do with "a challenge" with Cloud.
Some prequel to Advent Children writing from the main writer of FF7 implies that Sephiroth while int he Lifestream realizes that he's fading away, so he needs to hyper focus on something in order to maintain his sense of self'-indentity and not just merge with the Lifestream. He decides to hyper focus on Cloud. Then Advent Children happens.
FF7 Remake Sephiroth is post-Advent Children Sephiroth. He still needs Cloud in order to maintain his "self", and he still needs Cloud to deliver the Black Materia to current timeline Sephiroth.

Note that I didn't say any of this is good writing. The lead writer of FF7 is actually fucking weird and bonkers, and full of a lot of bad ideas. But this is the lore behind why Remake-not-at-Northern-Creator-Sephiroth is the way he is.

Sephiroth doesn't want Cloud to die in Remake. He even says as such.
"Our planet will become a part of it one day....But I will not end. Nor will I let you end."
Cloud is literally the best thing to happen to Sephiroth in his life in some weird and fucked up way. Plus, he seems to want Cloud's help for some upcoming battle with destiny or something.

Cloud is the only thing in Sephiroth's life that wasn't a disappointment. Granted, he had no expectations from the start, but Cloud's still the only one who keeps surpassing expectations.

              >Plus, he seems to want Cloud's help for some upcoming battle with destiny or something
My guess is, Sephiroth is immortal as long as he exists inside the planet's lifestream. But, the planet itself will one day return to an even greater cosmic lifestream (they talk about this in Dirge of Cerberus), and Sephiroth knows that when that happens, the planet's life will be absorbed back into the flow and him along with it, so he wants some way to prevent that from happening.

Presumably it works the same way that the planet's lifestream does just on a cosmic scale, i.e. the planet's soul rejoins the flow and eventually a new planet is born from it. I'm almost positive that's what Sephiroth is talking about when he says "our world will become part of it one day." DoC is all about how the deepground fags are trying to jumpstart the planet's return to the cosmic flow ahead of schedule, and that game ends with Genesis saying that he and Weiss still have work to do, so that could be the endgame for the remake: Genesis and his buttbuddies trying to force the planet back into the cosmic cycle and Sephiroth trying to stop them because he's happy being an immortal parasite

In the next remake events with Aerith will play out normally, until you get to her stabbing scene. Sephiroth will plunge downward to kill her as expected, only for Sephiroth to come out of nowhere and tackle her out of the way. Sephiroth will do this because he knows the catalyst for his defeat was killing Aerith, so to prevent his defeat he has to spoil his own assassination attempt and ensure she lives.

can someone explain to me what was up with sephiroth and clouds hallucinations? I played the game when I was a kid and completely lost the plot after the city levels. So Sephiroth was dead the whole time? And the reason he went bad in the first place is because he found out about his alien mommy and that was enough to make him murder his buddies? And then after that cloud pretends to be zack and tries to hook up with his girlfriend? And then the final boss is just the alien mommy who wants to destroy the world cause reasons without having any personal connection to protagonists, except for that they may have gone around dressed like sephiroth to fuck with cloud and co for the lolz? I think I liked this game more when I had no idea what was happening.

Cloud was having visions because Sephiroth was fucking with his mind because magic.

Sephiroth was alive, just chilling in his mana cocoon up in the North, until Cloud and co. came by and killed him at the end of FF7.

After that his spirit merged with the lifestream because Square wanted to keep the gravy train alive. They also gave Cloud cancer. Now Sephiorth is basically a force ghost that can manifest just to fuck with Cloud because he has nothing better to do with his time.

In FF7R it's all alternate reality/time travel shenanigans and Ghost Sephiroth going back in time to fuck with Cloud, because he has nothing better to do with his time.

No, he went bad because he knew that his will was Jenova's will and he fought against it and controlled Jenova's cell.

      >And then the final boss is just the alien mommy who wants to destroy the world cause reasons without having any personal connection to protagonists,

Jenova is literally just "alien eldritch horror" thing which corrupts, which doesn't necessarily give you a good villain to actually emotionally get invested in. So Sephiroth sort of serves as that part of things. But it's really ultimately about Jenova.

the only time you see the real sephiroth is when you see him at the crater i think.
every other iteration of him, minus the flashbacks with him, are jenova. though it's arguable if it's all jenova or sephiroth controlling jenova's body, which escapes when you're in the holding cell in the shinra building.
but i'm also not sure if sephiroth was manipulaitng jenova or if jenova was manipulating sephiroth.

I was always under the assumption that it was a Sephiroth that's twisted by Jenova's will, and Jenova isn't so much like a human plotting anything, but more just an alien abomination simply reacting and instinctually doing things it needs to in order to survive and spread.

I agree, but that's the point of Sephiroth being so cool, he controlled his will and surpassed Jenova, that's why he's becoming that Jenova like being by the end. He subdued her.

But then in Advent Children Jenova chose him and mutate Kadaj into Sephiroth, so it's confusing.

Something I just noticed with the remake is that half the reason the time jannies keep getting involved is because Cloud keeps going off-script. Cloud's a lot more of an asshole in the remake compared to the original, more selfish. He never even considers giving the flower to Marlene, which might have caused Barret to see him in a better light instead of decide to kick him out. He tried to kill Reno, something he never did in the original. So something is compelling Cloud to be more of a dick than he originally was.

This is played completely straight, and this Sephiroth has two angel wings. He eventually reveals the events of FF7 were also the result of meddling, and he has been trying to correct it all for eons to lead to his one true perfect ending, the world united against Shrina and peace with the planet as a whole.

A lot of the gravity of the "true twist" comes from bad translation so people don't realize that "clone" means an attempted recreation of a person with Sephiroth's abilities and not a biological copy. Sephiroth mind breaking Cloud with half truths and zeroing in on plot holes in his own story, and then those plot holes being subverted yet again by the person who's always been with Cloud is actually really cool but you don't really get the gravity of how much Tifa had to unravel on your first game.

Cloud's desire to get revenge for his hometown, mother, and tifa made him stronger than sephiroth in that moment. For whatever reason or detail, the sword impalement didn't strike a part that would do instant lethal or incapacitating damage (like cutting the spine, OPs pic is silly) and Cloud's righteous anger gave him the strength to defy Sephiroth and throw him into the wall/into the reactor core.
Have to keep in mind to, Cloud was able to strike his leg in the previous scene. Seph had a debilitating injury and was limping away.

Clouda is a mega turbo super coola hero who can fight win against anything even other big strong and almost like other even more super turbo mega coola big guys with big supero coola sword like Sephiroth. He's so badass that he can also use almost as coola but not as coola fire balls and lightings to beat up that evil (but still mega coola in my opinion even though he's very bad and evil) Sephirotha who is so bad and bad and evil that he will summon the big bad evil alien with a big bad superpwoers to kill! Not beat up! Not delete! Freaking KILL! KILL! (It was the only moment in the game where it felt like it was made for more grown ups then smaller grown ups) less coola and less badadass guys and make ultra coola (but bad bad evil) Speriroth be the most super mega coola guy with the biggest and stroger mega coola sword in the world. Could can hopefully stop him because he actually (it's a BIG twist) is the real STRONGEST guy in the world with the most super turbo mega coola sword that can deafete bigger coola swords and big bad aliens. Final Fantasy 7 is the most coola and mega game I played in my entire life and I got it for my birthday from my mom 20 years ego. Most of the recent games have Nojima credited as writter and Nomura as producer with Kitase as director. I'm sure they all work together on some level.

While there is a credited main writer, the truth is everyone were just discussing ideas around the offices during development. Interviews suggests that FF6's develoment team was very very small, like 10 people, which is how they were able to balance the wide cast of characters so perfectly story-wise.

          Anonymous

Who's credited as the main writer of FF7? There are 4 in the wiki, the rest of the compilation was mainly Nomura.

The very original treatment of VII was written by Sakaguchi himself, and it was largely a story meant to represent how someone passing away does not mean they're truly gone, and he wanted there to be a death that is more real and not "Hollywood death". People don't know any more details than that.

The actual 7 script ended up really different, but sort of uses the original idea to make the Lifestream, and death obviously plays a big part in 7's story.

Kitase and Nojima co-wrote FF7, but making games in Japan back during this time was a bit different than how we'd think now, where everyone sort of gives some input in everything, which is why Nomura is not actually one of the "writers" and does character design, but he actually did have input in story stuff in 7.

Originally Kitase wanted for every single party member to die on the Return to Midgar sequence when theyr'e parachuting in, and for only Cloud and 2 other characters you choose to survive. Nomura convinced him it was a bad idea.

Another interesting thing: Kitase and Nojima are the ones who wanted 7 Remake to be this alternate kind of thing, while Nomura wanted it to be more faithful to the OG games. He was sort of overruled.

It's especially weird since Nomura is known for doing really crazy ass shit in the Kingdom Hearts story, but he's very grounded when it comes to 7 for some reason.

I see, thanks for the explanation.

The best way to view it is that compilation is mainly a Nomura thing and is a one-way canon into it's own thing.

FFVII is a complete story, it can't be a true sequel because not everyone involved in the original game back to develop the compilation. That's why everything feels off and self-contradicting.

Do you know if Kitase and Nojima were heavily involved in the compilation?

            >Do you know if Kitase and Nojima were heavily involved in the compilation?
Nojima is the lead writter for every FF7 thing since Crisis Core. Kinase has been a producer or director for nearly everything FF7.

            >compilation
You got it reversed. A lot of compilation writing nonsense is Nojima and Kitase again. Nomura served as director on a lot of them, though.

People really forget how bat shit weird and nutty the actual OG 7 writers are, and throw it on Nomura because of Kingdom Hearts. But it's largely a lot of weird nonsense because the OG writers got a lot of weird ideas, and a lot of it doesn't necessarily work well a bunch of the time.

It's especially weird since Nomura is known for doing really crazy ass shit in the Kingdom Hearts story, but he's very grounded when it comes to 7 for some reason.

source? this is interesting. that's the last thing i would've expected from nomura.

The main part is from an interview in 2020, I saw other tidbits elsewhere but I can't recall what those were from.
It's not letting me post the damn link because it's registering as spam by Ganker for some annoying ass reason (archive link).

            The important part:
Kitase: I personally envisioned quite a dramatic change overall, but our director; Tetsuya Nomura and co-director; Naoki Hamaguchi, wanted to keep the beloved aspects in the original as much as possible. Eventually the development team decided to focus on respecting the original while adding in new elements, ensuring a delicate balance between the two.

The 7 Remake we got was a compromise. Kitase wanted to go even harder on Remake being completely different.

They really should've done that and also they shouldn't have called it remake.

              >Do you know if Kitase and Nojima were heavily involved in the compilation?
Nojima is the lead writter for every FF7 thing since Crisis Core. Kinase has been a producer or director for nearly everything FF7.

I see, we can consider everything canon then, they are into everything together.

              I see, yeah, I agree.

Well Kingdom Hearts is essentially Nomura's sole domain. It's his almost entirely his responsibility. Yes, Nojima's the writer but Nomura's the boss. On the other hand, while he was involved in FF7, he wasn't the boss there and I guess in his mind, Kitase, Sakaguchi and Nojima outrank him, so he's probably more grounded.

But Nomura is Kitase's favorite, and Kitase's always expressed a desire for a FF7 remake with Nomura at the helm, hence the current situation. In regards to the Compilation, Nomura was also sort of the action director. The original premise behind Advent Children was almost exclusively just Nomura getting a chance to direct some cool action scenes. That was like 90% of the point of the project. The story was half-baked, but the story was never the point of it. The point was the fights. Everything, including Geostigma, exists purely to give Cloud an excuse to fight.

          >He was sort of overruled.
According to interviews, it was more of a compromise. So the changes we got were still toned-down from what Kitase and Nojima originally wanted.
But yeah, it's crazy to think Nomura and Toriyama were actually the voices of reason this time around.

          >he's very grounded when it comes to 7 for some reason.
Probably because it was his breakout game and he poured a lot of his favorite ideas into it. Before then he was just a creature designer that dabbled in character designs. With VII, not only did he get full control over the design, but huge creative input on the writing too.

Honestly, Shinra power scaling is kinda fucked, especially in Remake.

So Roche is 3rd Class, but he actually qualifies at least for 2nd according to his profile. He's definitely stronger than his rank suggests, he's just too much of a loose cannon. Cloud just straight up runs circles around him, dude's no match at all.
And then Cloud fights Reno, and he seems to struggle a tiny bit more in that fight than against Roche, which implies that the Turks are on average stronger than 2nd Class SOLDIERs. I don't really know how strong Reno's supposed to be, but he seems to be weaker than Rude.
And then there's Rufus, who's stronger than all of them, but Cloud still beats him 1v1. Struggles a little more, but he still has Rufus' number.

So the Shinra power scaling as of FF7R is:
Rufus > Rude > Reno > Roche (SOLDIER 2nd-tier) > SOLDIER 3rd Class (elite mook)

Was there ever any doubt? The TURKS are like a cadre of hand-picked talented indivduals, of course they're better than SOLDIER.

      >Another interesting thing: Kitase and Nojima are the ones who wanted 7 Remake to be this alternate kind of thing, while Nomura wanted it to be more faithful to the OG games. He was sort of overruled.

MAKO's probably just a cost-effective method of mass-producing supersoldiers, I imagine the Turks have super-rare and expensive gear and materia. Like shit your party can't even get in the game.

I see Turks as elite spooks/special forces.
I see SOLDIERs similar to like Green Berets. Elite regular army, but still regular army. You wouldn't send a SOLDIER to do something you need a Turk for, and you wouldn't send a Turk to war because they're not soldiers.

Cloud's also one of the few "perfect" SOLDIERs. He lacks the cellular degeneration of other SOLDIERs due to being injected with pure S-Cells. There were others, the numbered Sephiroth "clones", but they all lost their marbles. Cloud is the only "SOLDIER" other than Sephiroth who doesn't suffer from cellular degeneration and is also capable of, like, living like a normal person.

I mean, maybe Weiss too but I'm still not entirely certain what his deal is. Genesis got healed too I guess.

No S-cells lack the cellular degeneration. It was a big deal in Crisis Core.

      Anonymous

Was the degeneration ever explicitly mentioned to be caused by Jenova cells? Or could it have been the mako infusion process?

        Anonymous

The method itself is flawed. Trying to inject Jenova cells into a human being inevitably results in cellular degradation. Project G and Project S both attempted to remedy these issues, but Project G failed while Project S produced one success. Because Sephiroth was injected with Jenova cells as a fetus, he's a more complete, "perfect" bearer of Jenova's cells and was immune to cellular degradation. Hojo experimented with injecting Sephiroth's cells, S-Cells, into subjects, hoping to pass on his immunity to them. Most basically lost their minds, but Cloud alone managed to snap out of his stupor. Because he was injected with Sephiroth's cells, he's immune to degradation.

Right, so it's related to the Jenova Project. So SOLDIER who only undergo mako infusion, and not Jenova cell treatment, shouldn't degrade.
I guess the First Soldier gang have a chance at surviving after all.

That would be impossible since SOLDIER existed before the Jenova project. Deepground was originally a hospital for treating them before it became the Jenova project reject freakshow.

The Jenova Project started 30 years prior to the start of FF7. The SOLDIER initiative is an offshoot of that project.

    >Survived being stabbed by Sephiroth and yoinked Sephiroth to Mako pit? Sephiroth had just slashed Tifa
    >Came to from being 5 years in Nibelheim Mansion basement and experimented as vegetable, carried to Midgar by Zack , crawling to Midgar train station and suddenly came to? Tifa found him
    >Survived the fall from Mako Reactor to Aerith's church? Tifa was there
    >Survived dip to the Life Stream and mako poisoning? Tifa was there

And when he failed joining Soldier?
