How did Digimon succeed where Pokemon failed?

Being one of the top grossing franchises is considered failing/flopping now?

Digimon never got out of Adventure's shadow. Even when Tamer had better story, it sold less than Adventure. This is why Adventure gets so many sequel and a reboot.

        Anonymous

        >Tamer had better story
First half of Tamers was dull monster-of-the-week bullshit, with Takato literally crying all the time, Ruki/Rika being way too angsty and emo for a literal ten year old, and Henry/Lee having barely a fraction as much personality as his own partner did. It was fricking rough. I firmly believe that the first half of Tamers was written under some kind of heavy scrutiny from the executives, and as soon as the higher-ups looked away, Chiaki J. Konaka immediately got high on LSD and started cramming in as much Lovecraft and emotional trauma as he could fit into the story, and by the time the executives peeked in again, it was too late to rewrite the later half of the series. There's no other way to explain the magnificent tonal shift from, "ineffectual government agency monitoring monster attacks that kids fight off because adults are useless" to "entropic nightmare from two-levels deep into alternate realities has breached dimensions to consume the world and speaks with the voice of a little girl, who it also holds hostage, and by the way the little girl is a victim of parental neglect"

          Anonymous

The Kanto stuff in Pokemon is pretty mild compared to Digimon Adventure. Most Digimon media for the past decade or so has been Digimon Adventure Tri movies (for 3 years), then the Last Evolution movie, and a Digimon Adventure reboot all in succession. It'd be like if every new Pokemon game still had Red as the main character.

Digimon has never been good at anime series so adventure pandering there is whatever. What i can’t stand is the adventure pandering in the roster of the Story games as well as OMEGAMOOOOOON playing a major role in everything

When it's being serious, Digimon takes itself way more seriously than Pokemon. When it's being edgy, Digimon gets way edgier than Pokemon. When it's engaging in self-parody, Digimon is way sillier than Pokemon. When it sets out to develop a cast of characters, Digimon is way better at character building than Pokemon. When it bothers with worldbuilding, Digimon is way better at worldbuilding that Pokemon. Basically Digimon is Pokemon with all the dials turned way up. That's why, for example, the standard evolution chain has five rungs in it (not counting newborn babies) for Digimon while Pokemon has never strayed farther than three. Or why Digimon has played the "monster so powerful that it threatens to destroy the universe/multiverse erely by existing" card like five times, whereas Pokemon has done that like twice.

Yes, but Pokémon is the Fortnite of multiplayer shooters and Digimon is closer to Battlefield. Being serious and limiting to an older audience is actually a crutch. It also does not help that Pokemon’s core product appeals more to capitalism whereas Digimon’s is niche.

      Anonymous

it kinda hasn’t? It’s less successful on an objective level, but it definitely has a more dedicated niche. It’s kind of been fricking up repeatedly by deepthroating Adventure wiener for years now, alongside the disasters that were most of its anime series from Savers onwards, but I don’t think its fans care as much because 1) its newer designs seem to actually be taking cues from what came before and making something cool out of it instead of just going “REMEMBER THIS” a thousand times and 2) because there’s less of them and they’re probably used to the far more anime-esque bullshit Digimon gets itself into on a regular basis

      See , basically

Digimon started better but fell off faster thanks to the anime, as well the games which ironically became more and more like Pokemon

The series eschewed its unique identity to chase trends and make bank off of nostalgia for Adventure which was an extremely basic shonen anime

    I just hate agumon.
    Agumon is digimon's charizard.
Whatever new game comes out it just must to feature agumon.
And even when developers asked what digimon should be the partner for the MC of the Digimon Survive game moronic fans yet again voted Agumon.
Out of so many options they keep bringing agumon.

Sorry the honor goes to Warrior from Another World by Takachiho Haruka. February 1979. More than 2 years earlier than Dunbine. But well we can agree to disagree that The Tale of Urashima Taro might be the first isekai literature ever made. Or the tale of Adam and Eve, except that one might be reverse isekai instead since Adam came from another world (Eden).

Eden is not another world and is specifically given an earthly location in the Bible.

Digimon fans, how do you feel about the new Digimon anime? For me, it's way too slow and they are trying to hard to build up this GRAND EPIC story.

      Anonymous

Ghost Game is pretty good from episode to episode but Digimon fans by and large prefer overarching stories so it's missed the mark on its audience by a mile. I don't know if kids like it though. IMO Ghost Game might benefit from repeat viewing better than other shows; it almost seems like it's made for syndication, where it doesn't matter what episode you watch at any given time.

Adventure: was pure shit and one of the worst anime of the last few years though so Ghost Game is gold in comparison.

    >bro we have an anime and a fitbit rip off
lmao, it is irrelevant. Granted larger than something like say, Nagatoro or even modern Yokai Watch, but by no means does it match Pokemon in its cultural (or financial reach). Digimon always has had an identity crisis.

Pokemon corners the market in market in terms of monster raising and collectathon. SMT COULD be a competitor but unfortunately the demons vary and are more so based off what you fuse, not a traditional moster A > monster B > monster C with a continuous theme type game like pokemon or digimon.

        >dumb zoomers
most pokemon fans are generally oldgays.

Digimon games generally are shit, which is a shame as a decently funded project would probably garner more interest. The closest game that was interesting in recent memory is Survive, but that went under a lot of people's radar as it's a VN.

Outside of lukewarm games Digimon is not really in better place. Constant Adventure pandering is not only annoying, but only very surface level and misses what made OG anime so good - the sense of adventure and exploring new, alien world full of fantastical creatures is just not there anymore. It was was story of bunch of kids getting lost and being forced to mature and understand themselves. The titular digital monsters were pretty much secondary and were there as foil and means of interaction with new world.
Now compare it to Tri - Bunch of already mature and well groomed teens sit in their boring-ass school in boring-ass city, having dragged-out drama because their glorified puppies are biting each other to death.
Also the way how 02 squad was treated was absolutely fricked.

If the games didn't suck and the series didn't bank so hard on the anime I would probably be more into it. I also don't give a shit about Adventure.
