I do recall Eric Stuart (2nd dub VA for James, one everyone misses the most though before the end of his run everyone was excessively harsh on in the role in hindsight though tbf we had no idea how awful JCC would get here) said he actually enjoyed voicing cross-dressing James.

With the start of XY I think they started ditching the entire "be dub friendly" thing. The first XY ending is a niconico Douga-inspired one with Japanese text flying everywhere that they just did an edited textless version of for international dubbers (TPCi didn't use it, but the Korean dub did, I've seen a clip) and the second XY ending is a completely undubbable thing created specifically around the original lip flaps and voice acting (TPCi still dubbed it. The result was horrendously bad).

The dub has been terrible since XY, absolutely **terrible**, not surprised.
For all the flak 4Kids got, even towards the very end in the Anime, their dub of the OS and first 3/4 of AG is the superior one in English to most fans to this day: and the voice acting in it is better than anything TPCI put out in 15 years on the whole, the VA work even in faithful dubs like Generations & such is pretty subpar (the best dub TPCi has done is Origins in 2013 post-4Kids, it still has a censored Charmander bite and Hebert's Oak is very average fare).

The English dub has been trash for longer than it was good by this point, no worries, I believe you.
I heard TPCI has episodes where it's full dub music now, glad I quit the dub before most (the VA switch is when most normies gave up on Pokemon back in late AG, can't blame them since the dub's drop in quality was serious then even though it was just average/watchable by that point), but XY onward it's a unanimous consensus except for Plebbit and YouTubers the Japanese Version is vastly superior now.

My understanding is that OLM legit had no fricking clue who "4Kids" even were or that some other company later started dubbing the show into English. They had nothing to do with the foreign licensing of it.
