Covid hit everyone, how did the rest of the gaming industry not partake in this growth? Why only Nintendo?

nintendo's hardware prices barely budget, whereas the rest of the industry saw shortages and price increases (especially in pc hardware)

Nintendo wouldve also seen shortages in chips.
The real reason is nintendo was simply smarter and reacted better.

        Games.
Also nintendo actually makes money off of the switch and their console is low powered enough that it was barely affected by shortages.
The only reason they've been putting off a new console is they know that they would get fricked by shortages, but it seems that they're done putting it off.

        >how did the rest of the gaming industry not partake in this growth?
Nvidia, AMD, and Microsoft grew tremendously because of Cloud Infrastructure and Mining/Ai.
The other consoles launched in the middle of the crisis, so it was hard to manufacture and ship enough. And scalpers.
pc hardware became expensive because it was competing with medical supplies on container ships, and work from home workers all bought new computers, miner grabbing every gpu and inflating prices so normal people couldnt purchase them.
The switch came out in 2017, there was plenty of stock laying around to sell.

The rest of the industry did, just not to the extent that Nintendo did with the Switch. Animal Crossing released right at the peak of the lockdowns. Xbox and PS didn't release their next gen consoles until months later and had massive supply issues because of it.

While covid definitely helped it was still selling like hotcakes even without it, the main issue was the competition as in it had none. Sony and Microsoft went full moronic this Gen and wasted money buying studios and going full time on AAA game design but those games take ages to develop and are very expensive so both of their consoles end up mostly as very expensive paper-weight, hell at least Xbox has that game pass thing but Most of the stuff there I could get on PC and nowadays it's the same with Sony.

You won't ever find a sample of the virus if you even ask to see it. Why do you think there is no bit of the virus in the "vaccines"? Because it doesn't exist. Don't worry, NoJ is getting a good mouthful of modern western game development from retro studios.

I guarantee you, when (maybe if) Metroid Prime 4 releases, they'll probably stop working with them.

        Here's a little exerpt from 2000:

        >The working environment was chaotic, with development getting behind schedule, and Nintendo executives complaining on how the games turned out.[7] In 2000, producer Shigeru Miyamoto visited the studio. He was disappointed by the games except for their demonstration of the MetaForce game engine, which led Miyamoto to suggest that Retro could use the engine to develop a new game in the Metroid series.[6] Shortly before the 2000 Nintendo Space World conference, Nintendo granted Retro the license to create Metroid Prime, and Retro shifted all development resources from MetaForce to the new game.[3]

Think about how bad it is now.

Spaniard here, you have no idea how shitty Mercury Steam is to work at. Got 2 friends who work or worked there, one mostly for the Metroid 2 remake, the other since the first Castlevania game they made.
The enviroment is ncie and workers help and support each other a lot, but the direction is horrible. Bosses are moronic boomers who bend at anyone with money and say "yes" without ever asking for more time or resources because "it's a great chance to make a name working for someone improtant!", so their pipeline is the kind to overhire, crunch all the time, then fire most people until another projects starts. They do keep most seniors but don't have a big enough team to make their own original IPs and instead expand or decrease as the project needs it.
Everyone I've known or all the exemployees who worked there say the place is nice but the workflow miserable.

Don't forget the reason Japanese devs, specially Nintendo are so shitty with western devs is because (for obvious reasons) nobody can optimize games for Nintendo consoles better than them, so foreign companies are seen as subpar even if their game ideas and executions are viable and could be extremely succesful.
Nowdays you can find Capcom, Square Enix and ther companies claiming "japanese games are the best"! while also changing focus to the western market because japan hasn't been reliable as the main market for years if not a whole decade now.

Their new console released on november 2020 with stupidly planned shipments on top of not being handhelds. Honestly it's not that complicated, Nintendo started strongly with the switch thanks to the help of a lot of WiiU ports but its handheld nature combined with COVID turned it into a phenomenon.

        Anonymous

They did, everyone seen rises in sales for videogames, Xbox n Sony just thought it was going to keep happening forever.

A big part of it is that Nintendo sells their console at the profit. Sony and Microsoft do not make a profit off the console, and make their money from software sales or services. And Sony and Microsoft's method work, kind of (Microsoft is constantly setting itself on fire since the xbone due to other dumb decisions.) But things change when the console itself is profitable.

Nintendo still engages in a lot of the same tactics Sony and Microsoft use, but they don't need to hunt them as aggressively. They still want you to pay for online, DLC and microtransactions since those are a source of profit but they don't NEED you to for the math to work out. If they sold you a console and a game, they're in the black. Someone who bought the switch, BoTW and then left it on their shelf is still a profitable transaction for nintendo. Someone who bought a PS5 or Xbox and one game, and then let it sit on the shelf since release is a loss for Sony and MS.

        >Nintendo sells their console at the profit
Fricking thank you, no one else in this thread seems to understand that Nintendo has always been a step behind on technological advancements FOR A REASON.
Because of two reasons, technology availability, the stuff they use for their consoles has been out for years, therefore the cost of that tech has significantly decreased, the second being since that tech has been out for long enough, people are able to optimise its performance better than people being given consoles like PS5's where it takes years and game releases to understand the capabilities of that platform.

          Anonymous

This, all the usual money schemes others rely on in a matter of life and death is bonus pocket money for Nintendo. The moment you can sell old easily available hardware at a premium, it becomes so much easier to make a profit because everything on top of that sale is a bonus.

Limited exclusivity is moronic, why buy a PS5 if the superior version of the game is coming to PC a year later?
Wasting their money and my time, really. Some FOMOgays will dip but many will not.
If the PS5 had 20-30 bloodborne tier full-exclusives, like the PS2 did, then it would sell more.

Every Mario game has a unique gimmick to fresh out the experience (fludd, gravity, cappy) and almost the same with zelda, except it was physics based open world game instead of the typical non-interactive environment of every other open world game out there. They read and push on their own direction instead of following market trends.

Zelda usually has 1 or 2 games with the same engine per generation, ocarina and majoras on n64, wind waker and twilight on gcn/wii, the one in the skies for wii, botw for wiiu/switch and totk switch only, probably switch 2 enhance port.

Just because they utilize the same characters/IPs for their games doesn't mean it's the same game anon. That's how they manage to make their characters well-known and evergreen. If they have a concept for a new game or mechanic, they try and use it on a new game using one of their IPs. Hell, Splatoon was supposed to have Mario characters before the new guys suggested they use inklings instead.

        >developer not exist anymore
        >random developer take a dead franchise, make a "movie-like" videogame where character only walk in a long corridor (God of War)

Nintendo warned these people, especially Sony what would happen if they tried to enter the market with these "movie-like" games, they would go the way of Sega, eventually abandon the market. Here we are today and exactly that has happened.

WiiU's problem was bad marketing and them having faith in third party support they learned their lesson never rely on third parties no matter how much input they give towards your console they will find a way to screw you.

It's basically this combined with COVID. The first time I bought a switch lite was when I was a failing uni student during covid who could never go out or do anything and was just listening to kingdom hearts OST ever night. one day I got board and decided to get into videogames, and actually started with my DS and minish cap and it was REALLY fun, like extremely so, and that made me fall in love with videogames.

So I bought the switch lite because it was the cheapest console that could give me the most games, and appeals to my specific needs for comfort. PC gaming could get uncomfortable sitting on a standard chair too long, and FPS games made me want to vomit and console couch gaming gave me headaches for whatever reason.

Switch was simply the best console for me.

      Now? It's steam deck.

Yea but if the were cult like they would have bought it anyway. Same goes for the N64 and GCN. The Nintendo cult isn’t that big honestly but their causal appeal is much bigger then the other 2 since video games were basically “a Nintendo” for years

That's part of the issue. A bunch of casuals that bought the Wii for Wii Sports and Mario Kart thought it was just more Wii so they didn't care. It was even in the name. It's one of the worst console names in history.

The WiiU bombed because it didn't have the Wii Remote which is what MADE the Wii "good" and "cool" in the first place. They brought a successor to the Wii Remote with the Switch.

It's simple ass. The Wii' biggest selling point was not brought over to the WiiU. It had nothing to do with games or marketing.

Wii U flopped, game cube flopped and they shit out remasters. Switch is the peak of Nintendo, they will never get to that level again because it was all fortunate timing

        Anonymous

GC didn't flop, it jsut didn't do that well. OP alone shows Nintendo never had any issue outside the WiiU era, which wasn't that improtant because the Wii was ridiculously profitable. Realise that Wii's Peak was three times Nintendo's older peak not even 5 years ago.
This is profit too, meaning as long as there's green in the bar, it's all good. If it isn't more than last year it ain't that big deal since we still made more money. It's also half-public as a company and are known to tell shareholders to frick off if they get annoying.
Another thing to take into accoun is their size. Even accounting for every localiser and console manufacturing division, all of Nintendo still is half or less the size companeis like Ubisoft, Electronic arts or Blizzard are, and these are just videogame devs.

the main difference between them and msot other vidya companies is that their work philosophy allows for msitakes. They can, have and will frick up a lot and still stay afloat no problem, meanwhile every other major player constantly struggles between "haha we make so much money!" and "so we're firing 2000 people (so we can make profit reports look good due lower spending)" which then fricks them anyway when it's time to make another game.

It's just a handheld with a handier TV out option and local multiplayer. That's the greatest strength of Switch, its gimmick barely qualifies as a gimmick. Nintendo would be moronic not to continue down this path.

      What gimmick? Having games?

        Anonymous

It doesn't have games, it has remasters, rehashes and ports from the Wii U. The gimmick is portability when all Apple was offering was Clash Royale and Candy Soda. They will face stronger competition from mobile and more handlhelds from other manufacturers. People in the west that got conned into buying switch during the pandemic because of Animal Crossing or Mario Kart won't fall for it this time, most of the games aren't good

He is right. Switch is overly reliant on ports, remakes and remasters; mainly from the Wii U since no one bought that shit. However, the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible, meaning Nintendo cannot rely on ports/remasters/remakes of Switch games. I predict that droughts will be more common for Nintendo in the future.

Nintendo Switch is set to clear 145 million by the end of its life (it's at 141 million right now). That would end up with Switch 2 at 85 million sales which would put it ahead of the 360, GBA, PSP, 3DS, PS5, NES, and SNES. It would be the 9th best selling console (including handhelds) of all time.

It's a handheld that can switch to tv and has joy-con controllers so you have to buy a real controller separately. Whilst Japan will lap up a Switch 2 the rest of the world won't, 100 million worldwide max.

Don't think that's the case nowdays, it's a way mroe balanced approach. Look at Helldivers 2, 80% of players are on steam, that's the whole reason SONY tried to force the account, to inflate PSN numbers.
Rebirth has been a small flop, so has Rise of Ronin seems to be using the "it's outpacing/salling well!2 while also refusing to report numbers, a typical tatcic when you need to rely more on how data is conveyed since actual numbers won't help.

SONY has been reporting slow downs for a while now. PS5 is a success but it won't be on the level of PS4 for multiple factors. This doesn't mean SONY is in a bad spot (they are, but not for PS5 itself)
                https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/14/24072692/sony-ps5-forecast-cut-q3-2023-earnings
PS4 also had a lot more sales for "games", and that using the Bundled console trick too.

But the main difference is and has always been different window of profit. SONY and Microsoft compete in in the big leagues which means high risks, high rewards and as production costs allegedly icnreased, that ouroboros is getting clsoe to unsustainable. Meanwhile the cheaper hardware made both development and production costs way lowers than them and profit windows stupidly big.
When a SONY game flops, it's a huge hit in profits as it is a loss of money. When a Nintendo game "flops" it's usually that it did not reach expected sales but still provided profits.

Mario Odyssey is a rehash of galaxy, of sunshine, of 64 (ignoring any DS games). It's the same game.
BotW was probably the only innovation they had and even then it was rehashed into TotK. But the game, the systems is the same as OOT.
Metroid dread is the same as return of samus, almost to a tee with SM mechanics. I mean they reused fricking Kraid...

I believe they have a solid foothold for the "family friendly videogames" market. When a parent thinks of buying a toy for their child, they don't think pc, xbox or playstation they immediately head to nintendo without even having to do any sort of additional research since they've built a solid reputation over the past few decades. Nintendo is just something you can't go wrong with since it's safe enough to appeal to everyone.

The switch has a good library of games with multiple platform-selling titles and the "gimmick" of being a dockable handheld is 10000x better than the WiiU was that actually made a console purchase something you'd consider even as a PC gamer which neither Sony nor Microsoft managed. When I was in college everybody had a computer and a lot of people had a Switch and barely fricking anyone bothered setting up an xbox or playstation in their dorm room, meanwhile people would get together for Smash or Mario Kart near weekly.

It's that easy folks. I feel like the rest of the video game industry is slowly figuring this out too. Capcom had the Crapcom era but now makes mostly good games too. Baulders Gate 3 got every piece of shit journalist talking about how "you don't need season passes, dlc and micro transactions to make a good game" so I think it's in the industry context right now despite anyone with a brain already knowing that

    They made fricking VIDEO GAMES
That is literally it. In an industry where the other console developers put out like 4 first party titles a console generation, nintendo makes like 4 first part titles a year. They absolutely mog the competition in the field of MAKING FRICKING VIDEO GAMES. Sony makes 4 titles a general and 3 of them are fricking trash. Nintendo makes 4 titles a year and 3 of them are trash and they still have more good games as a result. It is literally just that fricking easy. Make video games.

That's a nice narrative but they are hardly making any games. They had 1 3D Mario on Switch, 0 3D Zeldas (just the port of the WiiU one + DLC for it), 1 Metroid, 0 Mario Karts (just the WiiU port). For a console that lasted a decade the first party output is actually pretty pathetic

You absolute moron. Nintendo typically makes 1 version of their major IPs per system generation. That has always been their MO. Zelda is by far the only exception to this (OoT and MM for N64, WW and TP for GCN, BotW and TotL for the Switch). The only time Mario made two 3D titles in one gen was for the Wii. And Splatoon, and XC. That's it.

Real talk, Sony dropped from the portable race before knowing what Nintendo was doing and people use their phones more for gaming than ever before.
Nintendo making their console a hybrid let them cut development costs by half and focus their efforts on a single device than, unlike sony and ms, you could can play on the go or at home.
Just like competitors tried to copy nintendo gimmick with playstation move or kinect, this time ms did nothing because they didn't understand the market and sony tried to double down on vr wich is a pc niche.
Vavlve and Asus are trying to cash in the nintendo portable market but with no real hybrid solution out of the box they neglect that segment.
Sony as always tried to copy nintendo once again on the late development cycle with the Portal but without real backing and just being an extension instead of a integrated part of the design for the ps5 it doesn't do any part of gaming great, giving only mediocre experiences.

Products like those take years of R&D, the move came in the final years of the ps3 and now they just let go of every engineer that worked on the psp/vita. They really didn't want to invest on a mobile device and when they tried it was too late so they bring in morons who design a rushed project with no direction on what makes a great mobile experience.

Smart decisions. If the Switch wasn't a handleheld it wouldn't have done as well. Most Nintendo home only consoles didn't sell well except for the Wii and that was because of the motion control gimmick.

The N64 didn't sell that well though. It sold way less than NES and SNES. PS1 ate it up.

NES did sell well. SNES sold less than NES but still sold the most in that era so you're right about those two.

          Anonymous

The N64 sold 32.9M. In contrast, the Saturn sold 9.26M. The only reason why N64's sales didn't look as impressive in the generation it was in was because the PS1 sold more than 100M. But N64 did sell well, at a time when console gaming wasn't nearly as big as it is today. Remember that in the NES' generation, it was practically the only hardware worth having.

            Anonymous

            SNES sold 50 million
            NES sold 60 million
The N64 did not sell well by any reasonable metric. And I say that as someone who's first console was an N64.

            Anonymous

By any metric it didn't sell that well. The Saturn was a failure. N64 sold about half as many as NES and about 20M less than SNES at a time when the market was much larger. It wasn't a flop, but it did not sell that well.

            >But N64 did sell well
Only in NA. It was a failure in Japan/Europe. The Saturn was basically a half inverse where it sold very well in Japan but failed everywhere else. PS1 was the king that gen though, and for good reason.

They play things as conservatively as possible between cheaping out on hardware (or in general really) and targeting many smaller markets from diehard autismos and indie studios to genuine non-gamer casuals and the ill-utilized female demographic (why they pushed so many farming sims) that aren't the bloated, now-diminishing graffix race between the other big three. But between all that they've genuinely kept their bottom-line the same since forever now, worst case having a hiccup with Wii's explosive success with casuals. Or ruining kids' lives over ROM's and fanworks that wouldn't even dent their success, but I digress.

Covid is the lamest excuse. They only gained like 6 million extra sales in the lockdown period out of 140m.

What they did is they stepped up with their game development. The biggest area was in game length. If you look at Wii U and earlier, most of their games were 5-15 hours long. On the switch the average game length is more like 30 hours with some pushing into the hundreds or even potentially thousands (splatoon). Now it's possible to only play Nintendo games and be pretty satisfied as a gamer. That wasn't the case before making Nintendo dependent on third parties who hate them.

    >almost exclusively release high quality games in your franchises (even shit like skyward sword and modern troony emblem mogs almost all AAA garbage and cost 1/20th to develop)
    >always have cheap hardware, don't chase "MUH EPIC GRAFFIX SO REEL"
    >They're so overly cautious they won't even make games in their lesser franchises like F-Zero or star fox, despite them being simple genres that could be done effectively for under $500k a pop
    >Shockingly, not hiring 10000 useless people and sticking to making GAMES enables them to make money
How anyone thinks nintendo will go out of business or third party is beyond me, graphics have peaked hard in the last few years too so their next console will be frighteningly better looking and more powerful

Seriously the question here is how did every other company frick up so hard? Vidya isn't even taboo now yet no MS/Sony franchises from the 360 era are still alive for some fricking reason.
Gears? Halo? Ratchet and Clank? Killzone? MGS? Everyone else is moronic but nintendo are also smart.
I don't own a switch, CBA with their games anymore but its laughable how SHIT everyone else is.

Lmao no. The whole point of Pokemon Company existing is that THEY handle that. The whole managing of the IP

The Pokemon company is a jointly controlled between Nintendo gamefreak and creatures. Gamefreak doesn't set its own deadlines or budgets for Pokemon games on Nintendo consoles.

I hate it. I won't defend it. Just saying I do like having the snes library on demand for 20 bucks a year. get more value out of that than anything psn offered/

As much as I fricking hate the whole "can only buy if you're in on our subscription service" angle, I am absolutely in love with the Switch Online nostalgia controllers, having a wireless bluetooth N64 controller, SNES controller and NES controller that I highly suspect were made with the original factory tooling (for the most part) is fricking ace.

2009 to 2016 was a dark age for Nintendo because they produced literally nothing but the shittiest games ever which is why their sales went down.

I didnt read the thread but one of the big reasons is that they have extremely dedicated cult followings for their games and they don't put them out for other systems. that plus how cheap their consoles are to make means they make the money
